Not a muscle car but my next project

Just finishing up The TA I have been working on this past year. So last summer I picked this 55 Chevrolet 210 drag car. I have always wanted a 55 Chevrolet. I'm going with a classic street look most likely flat color white walls just a fun all around car to drive. The drive line is where it will be at. A classic 4X2 set up on a 327ci backed by a 4 speed. The car will need a new floor pan possibly some quarter work someone already raised the wheel wells. The doors, trunk lid and fenders are rock solid not bad for 60 year old sheet metal. The trunk pan is also in very good shape. It should be a fun build for myself. But if another paying project comes along this will be pushed into the corner until I get some free time. Just thought I would share....

Very cool Tri Five Project! I am doing a 57 210 Sedan with my dad. Great cars and lots of fun to work on!

Love it! Engine looks great. Now all you need is a straight axle and lose the front bumper.

Actually going for this look or stance. But having these velocity stacks coming out of hood.

I like the Watson late-50s street cruiser idea. Much more fun and more driveable.

I am jealous. Keep the pics coming. I had a 57 210 two door, tropical turquoise with white top in High School. Keep thinking I am going to find a deal on another tri five, but they are getting hard to find (not the cars, the good deals).

jasonL78 11-10-2015 11:03 AM

Re: Not a muscle car but my next project

Well the deals are still out there. I saved this one from the crusher. A local used car dealer took it in for a down payment. He just gave the guy junk value for it. I doubled his price I gave a 1000 dollars for it. I figured I could sell the fenders and doors off it for that. So basically I got a really good deal. I had no keys so I couldn't get into the trunk. We all know tri fives have issues in that area. Once I got the trunk open it was full of parts and the trunk floor is in real good condition. The main down fault I found with the car is it was an old drag car so the lift off hood ended where? On the roof. It looks like someone danced a jig over it. But they make a roof skin now so that really wasn't an issue. It will need a one piece floor most likely outer rockers. The frame looks solid. Its going to be a driver. Flat color but have everything fixed and straightened and painted. It will be a frame off but just to remove all cancer.

Not bad for a 60 year old door. Driver side door and fenders just as nice.

I've been picking away at the 55 slowly. I have most of the panels blasted and in epoxy and high build primer. I may get the body off the frame this weekend.

I had a holiday joke with my wife. We used to do the elf on the shelf with the kids for Christmas. Well I had a 55 chevy on a wall this Christmas...LOL

Re: Not a muscle car but my next project

I LOVE me some 55 Chevys. When I was just a young lad I went to my fathers house for the weekend and noticed his 66 big block biscayne was gone so I go inside and first thing I did was to ask my father where's the Chevy he replies back " I traded it off the new car will be here in the morning. ( wouldn't tell me what type of car) Keep in mind the 66 biscayne was all original and mint and a original big block 4 speed car so I could hardly sleep that night thinking about the new car. As morning approached I was wide eyed on a cold rainy morning waiting on this new car well it showed up alright on 3 different trailers a basket case 55 2 door 150. I was devastated he traded that beautiful biscayne for this pile of junk. Spent the whole summer every weekend helping him build that car in the driveway ( no garage) to a primered driver and Iv been hooked ever since. The first time out we were cruising down the road and the hood was just set on with no hinges and latched in the front the wind lifted it off and threw it down in front of the car and we ran it over. Memories the all Mighty 55 is my next car whether I need another one or not.

Not sure how I missed this post, LOVE the 55 and agree that you should think about doing something along the lines of what's there once you paint it!

Re: Not a muscle car but my next project

Actually thinking about going with a gold or sunburst color. But it is going to be a satin color nothing shiny. This car is going to be a driver. But of coarse I am doing a frame off lol. The car needs a floor pan and most likely a trunk pan. I'm going to fix all rust issues with some suspension upgrades. Spent most of the day getting interior and glass out of car. The glass was a chore by itself.

Jason since you are going to upgrade the suspension...it's a perfect candidate for a Gasser. Stefano can help you out if need be. Just saying!

Moving along... I got the body off the frame today. Very happy how the frame looks I actually got every bolt out except 2. I needed to use the torch.

I've been picking away at the 55. I added aftermarket side motor mounts and rear transmission mount to the frame. I'm also running 2" drop spindles with tubular control arms. I mocked all this up before painting. Time to start re-assembling.

I didn't know they stamped the frames in 1955. What year did GM start to do this?

Very nice project!!! I just got my 1st 55 last year (a 210 2 door), it was on the top of my bucket list as I never had 1, I had 2 56's and 2 57's over the years! Best of luck, looks great!

I’ve been pushing along on the project. I Installed the motor last night, now to get the rear-end back together. I’m hoping to have it rolling by the end of the month.
