68 Camaro - Whats it worth?
 

I have recently been offered a 68 Camaro from the original owner and I would like some help determining the market price for the vehicle. The car is a RS/SS 396 (L34) 4 speed car. It is matador red with a black vinyl roof and deluxe black interior. The drivetrain is original. The car came with 4 piston disc brakes up front but the original owner changed them to a modern set of discs as the originals were rusting whenever the car was being stored. He has the original disc brake setup in a box.
The interior is original and very presentable. The body is solid with no signs of rust. The original owner decided to stop driving the car and restore it in the late 70's. He had NOS GM full quarters leaded in at that time. The car was repainted 10 years ago due to someone hitting the front right fender. The paint looks great.
I have documentation for the vehicle proving that it is in fact a RS/SS 396 car.
I am looking for advice as to a fair price for myself and the seller. I realize that it is hard to put a value on the car without seeing it but I am looking for a ballpark figure so i don't get in over my head.

A lot depends on whether the front sub frame was tweaked even a little bit from the RF impact.

Prices are still up with no immediate signs of slowing down... which probably means they will drop like a stone as soon as I hit "post quick reply", right?

I think Charley is a bit light. If it were an L35, then I would top out at $45k, but think $50k would be the bottom end right now.

One more thing, Charley buys and sells WAY MORE cars than I do, so he may be right on the money.

Forgot to mention that the original rally rims and tires were stolen in 1969 while the owner was at a movie theatre. He came out and his car was on blocks. He decided to go aftermarket and he put a set of shelby aluminum slots on it.

Probably not a big detraction value-wise.

Agree, there are plenty of wheels around to come up with a reasonably close dated set of Rally's, if that is desired.

The story changes. I paid for the GM vintage services documentation for this 68 Camaro and received it today. Turns out it is a L35 car and not a L34 like the owner insisted. I was able to read the vin digits on the engine pad when I first viewed it but the suffix was covered in paint. I was planning on using some paint remover and a q-tip to uncover it before I made an offer. I am attaching a copy of the documents I received and some photos of the car. Now that everything is known, what does the L35 do to the value?

Playing Devil's Advocate here: are we sure he is original owner? The docs also change his story about original rally wheels being stolen... but he's got to be over 70 now, no offense anyone! :) There's also some aftermarket items under the hood.

And if you buy it, I have some bumper guard cores... Still, car has great curb appeal and certainly will hold it's own at a cruise night like it is in your photos.

As to L35 v L34 - I'll let others speculate on that.

Cool CAR!, but I am biased,,,,, Good Bones Esp if underside is in good sheetmetal condition. Lots of Potential w/o breaking the bank. Paper is a Plus.

The L35 has some fans; but I am not one of them. I never drove one that impressed me. Other than torque below 2k rpm, pretty weak overall.

There are those that just care that it is a big block; any big block.

For me, that would knock off at least 5k from what I would offer otherwise.

If IS a looker though.
