From the auction wording: "The factory L78 396ci V8 was removed under previous ownership." Also, from the seller on BaT: "The original motor is not available. Was not obtainable when I got the car."

That really is a shame to me. The car if real deserves the original drivetrain. Sean

Being a 70 L78, I’m shocked it only brought $53k. That’s my old car which I bought as an SS without documentation, had a really nice “day 2” look to it. I noticed the single fuel line and a few other tells and took a chance on it. I personally found the build sheet under the tar paper and got the car added to Dale’s registry. The tach is a factory error as its ink stamp corresponds to the build date of the car. The build sheet calls for a 983 tach, but got a 938 tach instead (small block redline). The part numbers make it easy to mix up. FWIW, I’ve seen other solid lifter Chevelles with the same tach error. I should have never sold that one. Just my 2 cents :)

----Red Alert had the very same mistake with the Tach!....Bill S

Having dyslexia, this is an issue that would be VERY easy to get wrong. Be interesting to know if all the cars mentioned with this error were assembled at the same plant...:hmmm:

I don’t think so. That’s 3 Baltimore cars mentioned in this thread, but I’ve also seen 2 Flint LS6s with the same error.

Still looking for one. Did find an auto L78 black/white stripes with white ivory interior. Buildsheet. Needs restored.
