Beautiful Big Block.

69L78 06-14-2019 11:23 PM

Yes the original motor mounts are in the car.

bergy 06-15-2019 12:52 AM

All big blocks were cast on molding line 1 at Tonawanda. All small blocks were cast on line 2. The "conv" and "HiPo" wording on the housing cores had no significance by the late 60s.

SS 427 / 425 Impala convertible

Beautiful car, and a great story. Why doesn't the Shipper document show L-72 437/425, just Z24 SS 427? Though LD on the protect-o plate is for an L-72 427/425 in a full-size Chevrolet in 1969 I believe. Not judging, just trying to learn how it was done back in the day.

Look at the order document from Wantz it clearly shows 425 HP

TAR6569 06-16-2019 06:39 PM

The factory invoice should show it. Interesting that it does not. Probably a goof at the plant. The cost for Z24 is with L36 included. Should have shown L72 separately above M21. Wonder if the dealer saved some $ because of that and I wonder if there is a cost difference compared to the order form. Would be interesting to see. The Z24 ECL code AB is correct for L72. This car is one of 273, 69 SS427's with the L72!

Next thing to look for will be the build sheet. Since the interior is original, almost a guarantee there is at least one if not more. Either back seat half, under both bucket seats and inside the bucket seat backs are all places Wilmington left them. Nice it's a Wilmington car so you should find one. I've been working on deciphering the codes so it would be a good example to see!

Real glad to add this one to the SS427 registry. It's the 100th US built 69 Z24 in our list!

Thanks gentleman, I just found the build sheet this week behind the passenger bucket seat, it is at the very top and will be a PITA to try & remove.

carnut4life 07-04-2019 04:53 PM

Congratulations locating the build sheet, best of luck getting it out!

TAR6569 07-05-2019 12:38 PM

Hopefully there is another in a more accessible location. Some of those Wilmington sheets found in the bucket seats are really a PITA to get out there others are really easy. If there is a sheet in one of the back seats, it should be easier.

Two years ago, I found a pair of 66 Caprice bucket seats for sale at Carlisle. Could see a Wilmington build sheet in the seat back so the seller let me take the cover off and get it. That one was easy. The other seat had one in the bottom but it was wrapped around the back of the frame, impossible to get out without taking the seat apart. I didn't even bother with that one unless I could take the seat home. LOL

69L78 07-05-2019 08:02 PM

I removed the back seat & both side panels and nothing.

----Jeff,,, That build sheet, if you can't find another, is obviously important. I think I would take the seat back to a good interior guy and have him disassemble it and then remove the BS with less chance of damage. A good guy can do this and reassemble your seat and no one will ever know it's been apart. Small amount of money in the long run, don't you think?......Bill S

Figures, cool Wilmington car with all original interior and they didn't leave one in the back seat! LOL Well at least there is one in the car! If the car had hood insulation, above it would be another location to look.

Bill, I plan on doing that when I get time, if I did not have all the other documents for the car, I would have done it by now.

What a boat! Love it!

69L78 07-10-2019 11:52 PM

I finally took time to remove the passenger bucket seat and retrieve the build sheet today.

camarojoe 07-18-2019 04:12 AM

Post it up.

Well, I cant take the suspense. Is it a real L72? Inquiring minds need to know.

I am meeting up with him in a couple days and will get more pics & info from him. Stay tuned.

Hi Jeff,

Unbelievable Chevrolet!

Looks like starting around 1985 the “so important” paperwork started to surface from diligence and seems you are still finding documents in the car to verify what “you” already knew.

Crazy machine you have. The video is reminiscent of standing off from a P-51 at slow idle as it hammers away ..... hair raising!

Thank you for sharing with the world.

Chris.

Bill Pritchard 08-06-2019 04:27 AM

I bet it had no problem pulling that boat!

So if there were 546 L72 engines in total produced for 1969 in full size cars, then exactly half ( 273) ended up in SS427 cars and the remaining 273 were spread across all models ?

----This train of thought can't be backed up with any pertinent info. It isn't out there. We know there are "some" SS427s and then there are the rest. Just don't have the breakdown...….Bill S

67BelAir427 08-08-2019 02:52 PM

L72

That is what I thought. But clearly the post I quoted states that 273 SS427 cars were equipped with the L72. That leaves 273 Non SS427 cars with the L72. Just repeating what he stated .

He's not saying what the breakdown is by model, just that the rest of the L72'S must have ended up in Bel Airs, Biscaynes, Impalas...

Mallard 05-09-2020 12:47 PM

I wonder why a beautiful cruiser like this would have been originally ordered with no power steering.

Charley Lillard 05-09-2020 01:49 PM
