Who here knows about 1970 Camaros?
A friend asked me if all 1970 Camaros (I assume he means 1970.5) had 12-bolts. Anyone know?
I'd guess that smaller engines didn't get 12-bolts, but I also know Chevy was much more consistent with rear end specs than BOP so I dunno. |
70 Camaro SS 350 (L-48/4bbl) got the 12 Bolt
70 Camaro SS 396 (L34 & L78) got the 12 Bolt Is this the info you asked for ???? |
So what about non-SS cars like 6, 307, 350?

You will notice that the L78 is missing from the above data. It came standard with a 3.55 12 Bolt Posi (mandatory option) rear with 4.10 gears optional which had Posi mandatory. RPO ZQ9 was the optional 4.10 gears for the Z28 and the L78 1970 would be the last year for the 12 Bolt rear in a Camaro. Beginning in 1971 all Camaros got the new 8.5" geared 10 Bolt Corporate rear. *Now . . . . with all that said I believe there was a way for you to get a 12 Bolt rear in a 350-2V Camaro which was the only Camaro to offer a "performance" rear. The ratio was 3.31 and it was only available with the TH Auto Trans instead of the standard 2.73. This may . . . . I repeat . . . may be RPO YD1: Special Trailer Towing Axle. Only 132 were sold by Chevy. |
Thank you!

Here are the axle codes for the above. One does puzzle me. It says that if you order ZQ9 you also have to order G80: Positraction. But there is no code for that. Only a code for an "open" 4.10 which supposedly you couldn't order. http://s26.postimg.org/q5o45jvc9/screenshot_4155.png |

If you look at the original 1970 Camaro brochure (before it was revised) and some early magazine ads you will see that an option for the SS was to be the LS6 454. Some say Chevy made a few before the option was cancelled - pure BS. The option was cancelled before the car was put into production. There are no engine codes for a 1970 Camaro SS with an LS6 454. Another urban legend was the 1970 LS7 454 Corvette. The brochure was never revised and there was a magazine ad - the option was cancelled before production began http://s29.postimg.org/40cbh8dpz/image.jpg http://s21.postimg.org/lx6ig0ufb/image.jpg http://s27.postimg.org/3y57mbmcj/tgb.jpg |
Other "urban legends" based on what the brochure or magazine ad said was available when it really wasn't are:
1967 427 Fairlane GT 1968 427 Torino/Fairlane 1968 427 Mustang GT 1970 Boss 429 Cyclone 1970 Boss 429 Cougar Eliminator 1970 Boss 429 Torino Cobra |
