1970 Camaro hidden partial VINs

where is the hidden VIN on the tail-light panel? on the subframe? I know there's one on the firewall behind the heater box...where else? Thank you in advance

Re: 1970 Camaro hidden partial VINs

The 70+ Camaros had ONE vin stamp on the firewall as youve mentioned. The 2nd Gen enthusiasts at www.nastyz28.com have never seen evidence of any other body/frame VIN stamping.

There is of course the VIN tag riveted into the dash area

The VIN's were also stamped on the Z-28 and 402 Blocks and Transmissions.

Re: 1970 Camaro hidden partial VINs

My 70 Z has two on the firewall. One was near the heater core and the other at the lower part of the firewall near the tunnel on the passenger side.

That's not true. I recall seeing posts about the subframe VIN on NastyZ28.com. I then looked at my subframe to see if I could find one and I did. Unless I was dreaming it. I'll take a look when I get home.

Re: 1970 Camaro hidden partial VINs

A member here had a very low mileage 70 Z that had a picture of the front sub frame with the VIN number stamped on it. The stamp was facing the outside underneath the drivers door. I looked on mine (not very carefully mind you) and could not find any stamp on the front subframe.

Re: 1970 Camaro hidden partial VINs

It was Kenny Pascoe's 3500 mile Z that I saw the VIN stamped on the front subframe.

Isn't that the low mile Z in the for sale section that's on ebay right now?

That's interesting...You learn something new everyday...I will check my subframe tomorrow for a VIN on the subframe...anyone got a pic. where it might be exactly??? I just finally located the VIN on the block after owning this car for maybe 20 years or so....

Re: 1970 Camaro hidden partial VINs

PM K Pascoe (member here). He may still have the picture of the VIN stamped on the front subframe.

Re: 1970 Camaro hidden partial VINs

Well I have found something in that area of the sub-frame:

3 470N2

but my VIN ends in 571940

anybody got pics of their numbers in thsi area? is this actually a VIN area. I have PM'd K pascoe - hopefully he will provide insight...

The first picture below shows the DATE of mfg, plant location & shift on 70 Camaro subframe.

2nd and third pics show Jack Seymours Unrestored, Unmolested, Original 70 Z-28 hidden VIN stamping.
LOOK on inside firewall area with Blower Motor removed

Links are only two of MANY at www.nastyz28.com. If you were too search (VIN number stamp or sub frame VIN) at the most informative 2nd gen Camaro web site, you could read volumn's on this subject

In conclusion there are NO other complete VIN numbers stamped on body or frame other than under fan plenum on firewall.

If you have evidence showing otherwise, the 2nd Gen LEGENDS judges at the American Camaro Assoc "Camaros at Carlisle" this June 20-22, would welcome the education!!!!!!!

I can only speak for my car when I say the partial VIN was stamped in two different places on the firewall.

Chuck you are 100% correct. That was the picture and thread I was thinking of. My apologies.. Here is mine somewhat faint at the beginning of the stamp.

3 - March
10 - Day
70 - Year
N - Are we certain that's Norwood? My car is LA...
2 - Shift

If the "N" stands for Norwood, what does "S" stand for? I have a 1970 Firebird subframe with a S instead of N on it.

Re: 1970 Camaro hidden partial VINs

Was not the 70 Firebird, built either at Norwood,OH or VanNuys(LA), CA ???????

Maybe you can ask at the Performance Years Pontiac web site (???)

Camaro frames should only have the (N)orwood or (L) Los Angeles designation...........

I guess my point is that Camaros and Firebirds WERE built on the same line so I don't think the "N" stands for Norwood. I think I will run over to my other garage and look at my 72 and 74 Camaros and see what they have on them if anything. They are both Norwood cars.

I don't think the N is Norwood. Lets review the rear axle tube. Last two digits are G with either 1 or 2. G meaning gear and axle plant... 1 and 2 meaning shift.. N on the sub must have some other meaning that we have yet to uncover.. Is there an LA car out there with L on the code?

Hotrodpaul where are you??

OK, I am at my other garage and the Firebird sub has 32470S2 on it, the 72 and 74 have nothing on them at all that I can see. So is this a 70 only thing?

Re: 1970 Camaro hidden partial VINs

I think the single letter notation in the date code you guys are talking about, denotes the steel plant manufacturers name.
From what I have witnessed:
S stood for A.O. Smith(Sometimes found with a circle around it too.)
PON stood for Pontiac,Mi.
PPS stood for Parish Pressed Steel.
I'm not familar with the N notation as of yet,but it could mean Norwood,as they may have had a steel manufacturing plant there named that as well.

Finalllyyyyy!!! Now that these cars are reaching 100k+,hehehe... maybe they will get the respect they deserve...let's face it...what's the only thing better than a DZ302??? a DZ 302 with 48 more cubic inches !!!(an LT-1)

My original 51 k mile 70 Z will still rev. to 7500 rpm's just like a 69 Z!!!...with a little smoke and all!!!

Not to say the 69's are sweet too!!! I always say that the 67's and 68's are sweeet, but GM just tweaked the molds a little for 69...and came up with the perfect for 1969 Camaro...and then they broke the molds!!! (hence the screen name)

But, man....my 70 1/2 Camaro has really grown on me!!! That split bumper, front spoiler, and stripes... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

My car is rather original, so I will check for the frame numbers tomorrow also!!!

thanks for all the great info.!!!

Re: 1970 Camaro hidden partial VINs

I can't imagine any reason for an assembly plant to date-stamp any component; my Production Engineering Group supplied the G.T. Schmidt VIN derivative-stamping tooling (for the body and for the block pad and the transmission) to all Chevrolet assembly plants, but we never supplied any tooling for date-stamping. I'd guess those date stamps were applied at the subframe manufacturing source for traceability. I don't recall who made the "F"-body subframes, but most Chevrolet frames were made by Dana, A.O. Smith, Parish, and Chevrolet-Bristol Road Stamping in Flint.
