What happened to the 70's street freaks??

Don't laugh at me for posting this but what happened to these cars? I am guessing most have been updated at some point but there has to be survivors somewhere. I vividly recall a 70-73 Camaro, black, wide Vectors on all 4's, black header side pipes, rear window slats and the whale tail deck lid. I would see the car off and on in the high school lot and I would love to own it today just like it was. There's a guy in town with a 68-70ish Vette, 70's paint, flared openeings, the whole 9 yards. I really like that car too. So, anyone know of survivors??

Don White has/had the perfect car like that. 1968 396 chevelle done in 1970 as you are saying. There are pictures of the car in the Atlantic City car show section. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Back in the 80's we used to buy alot of muscle cars in the south and sell them in New Hampshire... I can not tell you how many pinstriped diamond tuck chromed Camaro's and Chevelle's we used to run to New England... they were everywhere back then... ohhh the memories!

Does "has/had" mean that he (Don) sold the Chevelle?

I did not sell it or plan to for a while now. For every 10 people who looked at it 7 thought it was a time capsule and the other 3 thought it was Hideous. Most people loved the paint but everyone hated the interior. So I brought it home and gutted the interior. SHE'S GETTING A MAKEOVER!!! I will post pics of it when im done. Please let me know your thoughts on the finished car! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

What happened to all the 70's custom vans? That's the real question.

Don,
I keep going back over those pictures and the more I do the more I appreciate the car. I agree the interior isn't the most appealing but it is what it is (or should I say was?. Great job on keeping such a unique vehicle the way it is for everyone to enjoy.

Most of them were "family starters" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif, and were traded in shortly for more practical transportation, since they had truck motors that liked gas. The custom van thing was an expensive craze, and went out the same way disco did, quickly and quietly. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

Re: What happened to the 70's street freaks??

Personally I liked the interior in the Chevelle. This is what my 68 Nova had in it when I brought it home in 2001. I wish I had left it in the car... I got the correct bench seat and found a NOS bolt of fabric and now it's 100% original again... Nice but I liked the other just as much. Marlins car would look nice with an overstated interior https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

My two cents is I would have left the interior alone. I thinks it is period correct. Would I build a car with that type of interior now...no, but that is the way the ticket back then. It was "boss" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

Re: What happened to the 70's street freaks??

I'm gonna vote "good call" on the interior redux on the '68 Chevelle. I like the car, but I would have a hard time driving while suppressing the gag reflex from that interior. I'm sure Don is coming up with a suitably retro interior feel that is a little more palatable.

Only worse interiors would be diamond tuck crushed velvet, or angel hair.

In the spirit of gawd-awful retro sensibilities, I think someone should start a thread showing all of the terrible injustices done to Corvettes over the years in the name of individuality. Something about fiberglass just made so many guys think "I have a saw and some glue, I can make it REALLY cool". Not extreme but one of my favorite old articles is on "How to remove that ugly bar in the back window your new '63 Corvette".

The street freaks near and dear to my heart are the cars from the early to mid-seventies that were featured in the early seventies Car Craft mags and mid seventies Hot Rod magazines.I realize that most were mild, hollow blower case cars, but still, very cool...wonder how many of THOSE are left???....
P.S......I truly love that Chevelle Don!!....I could do that!!!!!............BILL

Re: What happened to the 70's street freaks??

The next time I am home, I am going to snap some pics of my Dad's cousin's '70 Camero. Even though it was worked over in '74, it is one of the most tastful street freaks I have ever seen! Originally a 327/4 speed, a 454/turbo 400 now reside dressed in Edelbrock signature series tin. The exterior is a beautiful red with some very tastful 3 color pinstriping wearing Crager S/S's all around wrapped in Hercules Honchos (I believe the back is L 60's). Slapper bars, fender flares, and L88 hood round out the outside. The interior is tall back buckets with a light diamond pleate. I want him to fix it up and leave it retro. Still gets me going!!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Wow look at that van! Looks like something Will Ferrell would drive in Anchorman.

Re: What happened to the 70's street freaks??

a lot of the street freaks were built from the most desireable cars, the big block cars either went racing, became street freaks or both, not many survived the 80's muscle car boom because they became the restored cars we see now.
