Lets get back to this subject again. Forgot where it was posted before. Now that Rotella is watered down what is the best for our flat tappett cams and hydraulic lifter motors. Brad Penn, Joe Gibbs,Valvoline Racing etc, etc! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Does anybody REALLY know?

Sam, we use Shell Brand in the Corvette. Has the best forumla, not water down at all.

Yes,i heard that Rotella is watered down a little, but the new Rotella still has enough zinc for our flat tappet cams.

Go with Amsoil severe duty synthetic racing oil, 20W50..

Motor oil for Diesels still has zinc That is what every one I know is using right now for flat tappet cams

Sam, The debates over the best oil for our old cars, especially those with solid lifters, can go on forever. Rather than debate over brand names, I think the rating is the only important thing to look for. Any oil with a CI-4 Plus or CJ-4 rating will contain the best additive package for our cars. That's the oil I'm running in the '62 and the oil I'll use for break-in of the new '09 when it's done.

I just had a discussion with the fellow that rebuilt the motor for my L72 '69. His recommendation for my needs (available at NAPA stores and not for use in catalytic equipped vehicles) is Valvoline Racing "Not Street Legal" 20w-50.

Norm, you're right about most of the Mobil 1 blends but the 15w50 Mobil 1 still has the old formula containing the higher(than today's) levels of zinc and phosphorus. Here's the information from Mobil 1's Product Data Sheet.
"Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15W-50 is formulated to provide outstanding engine protection for high performance engines and for consumers who want a higher viscosity oil and higher anti-wear performance ( ZDDP) than typically required by modern vehicles."

Has anybody used/tried the Joe Gibbs oil? I heard it is REAL good.

According to the oil company Chemist's I've talked to, you need 1100 ppm ZDDP for the old flat tappet cams. Rotella T has 1200 ppm, Valvoline VR1 has 1200, the 'not street legal' has 1300 BUT you need to change the oil every 500 miles because it doesn't have all the additives, Brad Penn is the old Kendall GT1 and has 1500 ppm.

Thanks for all the good info! I have not yet fired up the Yenko for the season, and plan to change the oil first - just wasn't sure which oil to buy! I've got a local NAPA, might have try this Valvoline VR1 or 'N.S.L.' stuff. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

I highly recommend the VR1,but you should always change your oil before you store it.The previous years useage alone breaks down and weakens your oils defenses considerably,and just leaving that sitting on your journals,walls,lobes,crankcase etc. for 6 months or more is when the chemical damage really begins to attack those vital internal surfaces.-Ron Paul

Good to know about changing the oil b4 you store it. I always thought it was a good way to make sure all of the old oil had time to drain down into the pan!

What do you mean a special blend. It is Brad Penn from Pennsyvania. That is the old Kendall Motor Oil factory. (green oil) Special blend?? Type in Brad Penn on Ebay and you will see his website. Pete can also get you Brad Penn but only 5W30, 10W30, 20W50 etc. I wanted 15W40 so I got it from him. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Thats not special. Also the guy builds nascar motors. Reason for the NC address. I believe Brad Penn has more zinc than any of them. “We are well aware of the problem and we still use the correct amounts of those additives in our products”. They are not producing API approved oils so they don’t have to test and comply. Their oils were NOT the “new, improved and approved” ones that destroy flat tappet engines! “We just build the best lubricants possible”. Sounds stupid, doesn’t it, New-Approved but inferior products, but it seems to be true for our cars.

I use Redline in my turbo car. Because the turbo is only oil cooled, not water cooled, I wanted something that would absolutely not break down at high temps. Got the added benfit of high levels of zinc.

Mike Miller, who writes the BMW car club tech column swears by this stuff. When I put their MTL in my Trans and Gear lube in my final drive, I honestly got increased gas mileage over a 6 month period. About .3 mpg. Not much, but measurable. Great products, but you have to plan ahead, as you can't get it at Wally World.

I have recently come across a great product, which when added to the current 'SM' oils, brings the oil to the 'SF' rating for pre-1988 flat-tappet engines. The product is ZDDPlus. After much research, I have added it to all of my '69 Camaros. In fact, I am so confident in the product that I am distributing the product. If you are in need, feel free to PM me.

Its good stuff Rich but I am not crazy about additives. The Brad Penn is the best deal in my opinion. Glad you are involved with benjamins school show and tell! He will never forget this early childhood stuff with dad! P.S. it seems oil has become a very important factor lately with these cars. Hey Sam, I don't know anything about the Brad Penn stuff Pete recommended. I don't know the rating. All I know is I would stick to the rating I mentioned before. Even if that stuff has more zinc, but is racing oil, I wouldn't use it in our street/strip cars. Besides the zinc, we need the full additive package to combat combustion gases and by-products in the crankcase. Racing oil is ok if we want to change our oil every 100mi. I like my rings to stay loose in their lands and not have my oil pan rot out from corrosive contaminates. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Its just the old Kendall motor oil blend Verne. Has a 1500 rating for Zinc. I still like Rotella-T but This is just a little better. Fred Gibb oil is good to but costly and full synethic I believe. Do a search for ZDDP on the www.chevelles.com web site. Lots of good info. Various oils have been lab analyzed for additives so you aren't relying on manufacturer hype.

Cumby: what's the best thread on TC regarding oil analysis? I just now read about a 1/2 dozen, but none were as thorough as I'd have liked...btw, one of the threads had a less than favorable oil analysis on the Brad Penn stuff (low, low on the zddp)...also alarming was the poor performance of the 2 major cam break in compounds????

Found Rotella T at my local Wal-Mart, it has the rating that Verne listed above - it's going in the Deuce tonight!
