69 Z Battery questions.....
Hello,
I have a 69 Z that was built in Sept. of 69. My original battery cable clamps have been replaced with a more modern bolt style clamp. The car is currently set up with a top post battery. Can I buy original style pinch clamps? (I am referring to the end clamps of the cable that connects to the battery...) Also, I am not sure if my car came with a top post battery or side post??? I do know it came with a H.D Battery option that was a 8$ option. I am still in contact with the original owner but he can not remember if it was top or side post. He just remembers cutting the original cables to install modern style bolt clamps. Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Anthony https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
You can't buy the clamps only, but you can buy complete reproduction cables with the spring-ring ends installed. If you had a heavy duty battery, it would have top posts, otherwise your car is late enough to have side post terminals.

Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
Should be side post with Y77 battery.
|
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
Thanks for the replies! But one person says side mount and the other says top?????
So since I know my car came with the HD Battery option its top post? If it did not come with that option it should be side post? Thanks for the help!! |
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
I think all 69 z's has side post batterys.

I think all 69 z's has side post batterys. [/ QUOTE ] The side post was introduced in the Z28's around June of 69, although some May built cars have had them. All Z built prior had Y55 top post. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
Early 69 Z28's had top post Y55 I believe. Late production got side pasts.
edit: too slow...... again |
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
what about the HD Battery option?
|
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
T60 (HD) was an R69 battery, and was a top post throughout the year.

Should be side post with Y77 battery. [/ QUOTE ] He said his car HAS the heavy duty battery option, therefore the top post/spring rings are what he needs, not a side post Y77, even if his car was built late. |
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
Here is what the old dealer option sheet shows...
$8.45 5T60AH So there is no way I can get the spring rings and put them back on the original cables? |
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
Yep, that's the heavy duty battery option. No way I know of to put spring ring ends back on your existing cables ... the lead is formed right to the end of the plastic coated cable, not screwed on like replacement terminals.

Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
Well that is ashame. I guess I would be best to leave it alone since they are the original cables huh. BUT, are the after market repos identicle to the originals?
If so, where would get some good ones? |

Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
From what I can read on the cables...
Positve Cable # 6290591 BW Negative Cable # 6296758 BJ Do these #'s mean anything? |
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
BW is the broadcast code for a small block top post.
Haven't seen a BJ code before. Possibly BH? |
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
Kurt,
I am pretty sure it says BJ, but that was the cable where the #'s and letters were kind of hard to read. I will look again tonight when I get home. Thanks for the help! |
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
Hey Kurt,
I just went out and double checked it and its BJ. Wonder what that means? Thanks, Anthony |

Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
Sounds like your car is another classic example of "an exception to the norm" and got a cable from earlier stock... might possibly have had to do with the fact it got the heavy duty battery option and most of the cables they were installing that late in the year were side terminals rather than the top post style. Who knows?... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
so if my Z28 is a 10D car, so what would the battery have been and would it have had top post or side post.
i am finishing a ground up resto and would like to know now before i put the wrong 1 in it thanks |
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
Unless it had the heavy duty battery option it would have a Y77 side post battery.

Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
Tommie,
Did you see the link I posted with all the battery info? It is pretty complete. Depends if it's a 10D of 68 or 69 . I wouldn't say the cable is all that unusual. I just don't recall seeing that code before. |
Re: 69 Z Battery questions.....
Interesting thread on '69 batteries and a very thorough link from Kurt S. and CRG. If anyone is shopping for an original service replacement Y-55 top-post (pre-May, 1969), I have them available. Feel free to contact me via PM.
