Has anyone tried the Zolatone trunk splatter paint?How close to original is it?

From what I recall The SCW has to mix their special blend in house and spray it right away. They do not sell the product or formula but will do an outstanding job for you. I imagine they don't share that since it is a trick of the trade that they have many hours into research and develpment, etc.

I kind of figured that. I tried the stuff from NPD and didn't like the results. It didnt create the big blobs of aqua like I thought it should do. I wanted to try an undercoat gun to see it that would work better, plus I dont have a concours car to warrant me to have the car hauled out to Latrobe, even though I live in PA.

I can remember shooting the original Dupont stuff. It was water base. Came in a quart, like paint. Worked great but you needed a cheap gun to shoot the stuff through as it was a real pita to try to clean outta the gun.

I'm not sure which specific vehicle he's inquiring about here,as there were variations in years/models,but an distant friend of mine from East Dubuque found a perfect blend for the 1969-70 Chevelle trunks a few years ago.

The stuff needs to be sprayed with a Shutz gun. Automotive paint supply stores sell it.

I am looking at spraying a 68 Camaro trunk. I did not mention that in my orig. post.

Mr 70, Your distant friend JOHN BERLAGE still sells the paint.
Has anybody reading this had real expereince applying or seeing John B's paint.
He evidently sells either Black/Aqua or Grey/White.....

His instructions say to use "a large nozzle primer gun with 30-60 Lbs is required. Adjust fan to 12" to 14" by opening air valve. Hold gun 18" to 30" from surface. Distance will vary depending upon pressure used, spraying at an angle will distort splatter, which will be required to obtain best result."

The stuff that I bought from NPD sounds almost exactly like what you are talking about. It stinks real bad but looks like the original trunk paint when you open the can. Unfortunately, the stuff comes with real vague intructions as far as what type of gun or nozzle achieves the best results. Practice makes pretty expensive perfect.

We also have it down to a science, were just about an hour from the grove. Sorry we don't sell it but will refinish your trunk for You. we just finished a Chevelle today and a 68 Camaro last week. I will attach pictures Jim 302-420-4743

I'm confused with this.We always got good results with just the back yard spray cans. Is that not acceptable today??Closest match I have ever seen.

The spray can stuff just doesn't leave a large enough "spatter". While originals varied, ALL I have and have seen have a pretty large spatter.

I've seen John Berlages cars - very, very nice. I've seen the trunks he sprayed with his paint and they look good, but I believe the pattern to be too fine. I've tried spraying his formula without being able to obtain the large pattern that is correct.

So, I do it in two steps. I spray the base color, then spray the spatter color thinned to the "right" viscosity and using low pressure. I believe I've duplicated the factory finish this way. See attached photo.

No. Not because I don't want to, but because there is so much trial and error. I start with an acrylic enamel color that is close and tint it until I like it. Add flattener and go. Same with the spatter color. It's very time consuming and a real pain, especially when you're just a hobbiest and don't do the same thing over and over. It's easy to see why all but the top shelf resto shops just spray the right color rattle can stuff.

Were the tail-lights in a car before or after the splatter paint was applied?

I did have proof that the tail lights were in after they sprayed the trunk in the car. There wasn't any overspray on the bezels themselves, but on the edge inside the rear tail panel, where the tail light goes through on my nova. No one had touched the car before with the han can either.

Tried out some repro spatter paint in a quart and it turned out just like the rattle can! I even had a shultz gun to apply it with. The power of marketing! mrrec, your trunk looks pretty close the junkyard 71 Ventura I just saw this past weekend, so I tried the same thing you did and it turned out just the same. Does anyone know the reason GM went with this sort of paint? You would think the bean counters would specify a quick shot of body color like Ford and GM did.
