a sad state of this SS

about 8 miles from me lays the SS Unite States steam ship
as of today it STILL hold’s the title as the Fastest ship in the world. She would average about 50 mph. In about 1960 they were out on the coast of Virginia And they opened her up and with the right wind conditions she at one point hit 89 mph. Now that is what we call the hot rods of big ships It is sad to see her just sit here and rust away. To me it like the statue of liberty. A piece of our history. I pass her add lest three time’s a week. People restore cars War birds but no body seam’s interested in keeping her alive. I know it will that a ton of money. Just hope that some day she will be restored Here is a neat video in the end of it shows it sitting at a dock in Philly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_cYpS7XfuU https://www.yenko.net/attachments/285...Image006fa.jpg |

I'm surprised it hasn't been brought inland and converted to a casino. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif

Sad, but true. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif |
Re: a sad state of this SS
I used to work for Moran towing in Philly (tug boats) passed it almost every day, always takes my breath away. She can only be taken out to sea on a Moon Low tide to get under the Walt Whitman. Huge ship though, and all the rat stops came off the ropes. Who knows whats living on that ship right now.

What's a 'rat stop'??
|
Re: a sad state of this SS
A 'rat stop' is a disc that is fitted to the cables or ropes that hold a ship to the dock. It prevents rats from entering or leaving a ship by tightrope walking.

Re: a sad state of this SS
Norm,
I pass that ship twice a week while in Philly ( to and from the airport ). I had no idea she held that title. I hope they have plans for her. Why else would it me moored there? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Steve |
