Rick, I should be getting mine back from Ramos Plating this week.I'll post the pics then and you can decide if you want to use them.I believe Ol' Doc Sam had a few sets at his place and can check if you want?

I found a guy that replated mine EXACTLY like original OEM chrome and when I got them back I thought they were NOS. Unfortunately, he did not acid dip them and the chrome was not sticking to the inside and coming off in sheets. I returned them to him and when the finally came back to me they looked like they had been used as a football at the Super Bowl game. Needless to say, they were/are junk! Hence the need for some more sets.

I will give Ramos as try. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Rick, Just got my valve covers back from Ramos and I have to say that I am thoroughly not happy! I did not think that the covers were going to be such a headache. They are pitted all over, the small dents that I asked to be fixed are not. They look like they came off of a survivor car instead of being freshly rechromed.I have not had a chance to speak with the Ramos employee's but plan to call them tomorrow. They did only charge me half price and wrote a note saying that to fix them correctly they would have to grind then down which would warp them and that the pitting was caused by the covers being plated before. These are factory original covers so I know that they have been plated only once.I just wish that they would have called me to let me know the problem, now I have a pair of valve covers that I can't use.Anyone have a good set or should I just go to Crane's? Here are some pictures of them.

Hey! Get your own add! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif

Sorry to hear that you had trouble. They do look terrible and a lot like mine. I think they can repair the pits without grinding them and they certainly should have called you before they shipped them. If I find a third set I will let you know. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

Thanks Bruce. If Donnie would learn how to post pictures on line here you wouldn't have to do that........ https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif Whoops, kettle calling the kettle black.............

Your engine compartment looks awesome Donnie! Crane covers are the best available. I would rather not go that route if I dont have to as they are still somewhat easy to spot just looking at the small lip around the base which is a little more pronounced then originals. Also the oil filler cap does not seat correctly with the ears pointing straight up and down (I thought I had heard they corrected that). They are very nice covers without a doubt but I would rather have originals if possible. If I don't find them soon I will have to go for the Crane covers. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: 1970 Chevelle valve covers

Well, I spoke the people at Ramos Plating today and was told that if they ground down the pits on the valve covers that they would have hit the spot welds for the drippers.Apparently they are now not taking in anymore valve covers to chrome.I may try somewhere else before I look at the Crane pieces.

k92 02-07-2007 10:12 PM

Re: 1970 Chevelle valve covers

Paul's Chrome quoted me an initial price of $350.00 per cover. They said that they can fix any pitting etc... and still leave the factory spot welding dimples. So the question is spend $700.00 or more to get the originals fixed or spend $450.00 for the Crane pieces????

Cranes are looking even more inticing at that price!

Re: 1970 Chevelle valve covers

And doesn't Crane's sell singles? That could make the price even more attractive if like me, many of your sets have one pretty good one and one that you dinged on the master cylinder getting the motor out. Back then I didn't worry, because replacements were only $25 at the dealer. Back then, I also didn't understand the slight differences between years and applications.

Re: 1970 Chevelle valve covers

Rick, I bought the covers I pictured above on EBAY and had a contact plate them. They have some small imperfections and may not be acceptable to you or a customer. I currently have another set of 70 Covers (ONE year only) out being plated locally, but am doubtful there also.......
Does anyone here know IF the Crane covers has ALL the 1970 Clips and correct wire stand shapes or just some...????????

Re: 1970 Chevelle valve covers

Chuck, Id' call Crane if I were you at 800 -597-4132. I'm sure that they'd be able to answer your questions. They are on the west coast in San Diego

Chuck,
the pics above are cranes and they have all the clips.

Re: 1970 Chevelle valve covers

Is there a site one could visit to see the different styles and what they are for since they were not smart enough to label any when they were stashed 20-25 years ago.

Re: 1970 Chevelle valve covers

I have a driver side one that looks like the one in the pic. Has one minor ding about 1/8" dia. Has the same wire loom towers and temp wire clip. I also have several pass side ones, but I don't know what to look for to see if they are correct for 70. $125 for a pair. I have had problems trying to download pics, but if you are interested PM me and I'll try again.

Thanks to Steve B. from Ct I have located two sets. Thanks Steve for all your help and a VERY fair price. So that I don't go through this again, I will still buy a couple extra sets for the shelves for future restorations if anyone has any.

Re: 1970 Chevelle valve covers

I recently picked up my next botched chrome plating job.
Brought local shop 70 LS-6/L-78 valve covers with light/medium surface rust. Asked if they could strip and replicate the factory flash chrome look. They agreed and said they would nickel and chrome plate w/o the usual copper and show polishing. Not sure where, why or how these misscomunications, missunderstandings happen......but shop stripped chrome sandblasted surface and plated over the "rough" surface. Looks very industrial and NOT usable on anything that would be called a restoration. I paid $100 for this exercise in futility. Same shop also could not replate 70 Camaro R/S grill surround, and left me with another incomplete mess..........
Thanks for allowing me to vent !!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 1970 Chevelle valve covers

Seems to be the current trend. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif I have heard at least 4 different people say they have been screwed on plating of valve covers, me included. Unfortunately that little "miscommunication" will cost me over $600 and what once was a very good pair of 70 only covers! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif Thanks to CTChevelle for bailing me out of most of the problem. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

Rick;

If the chrome plating could be successfully removed, could the covers be repaired and RE-replated?

Eric

SS427 02-16-2007 08:47 PM

Re: 1970 Chevelle valve covers

Nope! They attempted to repair them when I returned them to the plater and when I got them back a second time it looked like they beat them with a ball pean hammer. Maybe someone else could make them work but not me. They are junk in my opinion. Chad has seen them and am sure would agree. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Re: 1970 Chevelle valve covers

Thanks to CTChevelle, I got my two sets of covers this morning and they look great. Steve was great to deal with shipping them even before receiving my check and shipped me exactly what he described and for a VERY fair price which certainly helped my situation. Always nice dealing with someone from the club as we are seldom taken advantage of. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

If anyone else has 1970 covers in restorable shape for sale at a reasonable price, I am always interested in throwing some on the shelf so they are available for the next restoration and not causing me these delays.
Rick
