Who can identify this car????

A customer brought this car in for a restoration. It was purchased from the insurance company after the accident. It will get a frame off resto. but will be a driver not a trailer queen.. It kissed a pole at 45 mph. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif

That must have been one heck of a kiss. I bet only Paris Hilton could kiss the paint off of sheet metal like that. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Wow Kim, your the winner. That was quick. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/ooo.gif

Heres a couple more pics.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y17...cesco/66-2.jpg

Driver and passenger were not wearing seat belts. The driver had 6 broken ribs and a perfect imprint of the steering wheel across his chest. The passenger actually put up both arms and saved his face from hitting the windshield. Minor cuts and bruises. Overall very lucky. I'll post some updated pictures soon.

Re: Who can identify this car????

Looks like it pulled the frame horns in, and the dash appears(hard to tell from the pic) a little buckled. You going to have to replace the frame?

only 45 MPH? Wasn't any of this goin' on by chance? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif Seriously though, whoever was driving/riding should consider themselves VERY LUCKY to have escaped with their lives.

[/ QUOTE ]

Good eye Shonye! The bent frame was actually the reason for the total. The car is getting a used replacement frame. The dash as well is getting replaced. The only reason the customer is saving this car is because it is a real 138 car with original block and rear end. After disassembly and squaring things back up it really does not appear that bad.

Driver and passenger are incredibly lucky given the fact that they were not wearing seat belts https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif Hopefully they will not take that chance again.

Glad they are ok. The old 66 braking system especially manual did nothing to help the situation.

Hey Don, Can you retrofit an airbag into that guys column? We have to remember that straight line we drive these cars in should not have any trees in them. See ya later. T

Tom, No air bags in this car. They'll have to avoid the streets with the trees in the middle of them. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Don, I was fortunate over the years to own an original L-72 66 Biscayne which I regret selling to this day , also built a matching 4 door l-72, 4spd. Two feet on the brake pedal and the brakes fading away was too common...I was lucky however both times I lost the 4 door due to the brakes a nice soft swamp and a farmers field was all I hit.

Re: Who can identify this car????

Joseph, I can relate to that situation. I owned a 69 Camaro base car which I raced for 10 years on and off. It was an original manual drum brake car. I could always tell how good the car ran by whether or not I made the first turn off at the top of the track. Back then our focus was on how to go faster not thinking we eventually had to stop. It but sure was a fun car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif

Re: Who can identify this car????

If you replace the stock master cyl with a 75 Dodge truck master cyl(no it doesn't look quite stock) it will stop you almost as well as frt discs.
Glad to see you were able to find a good replacement frame. Most of those chevelle frames became stock cars. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif

Dennis, I'd love to do an L89 Post in the future. However that car belongs to a customer. It's an original paint 40k mile car thats been sitting for 10 years. I did a mechanical resto. so it can be driven next spring. It will come back for paint next year. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif Don

Project is moving along. Please don't critique this restoration. It is being done per customer request with parts he has available.

Critique it.....No way-------Looks just like how some of the fellas were setting them up back when.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif. I always thought that '66 SS396 had one of the cleanest styles..It was a shame GM never made those side hood vents optional....Awesome job bringing her back

I've been enjoying your progress on this car and the hood wouldn't be my choice either...but yes, the customer is always right...just like a woman is!?.
If the customer is flush enough, perhaps he'd consider acquiring and painting a stock hood at paint time too and tucking it aside...it'd surely be more marketable if sale time was ever necessary?.

Couldn't agree more........... in all three areas.

Even a 2" rise would have been better, especially considering it isn't needed at all. Having the stock hood as a backup is a good idea. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Looks like one of those old Woodward Avenue factory street racers from this angle--kinda' like Chevy's version of the Mopar "Silver Bullet" GTX.

Just install the headlights and then leave it the way it is!

The hood humm. To each his own for sure. Nice job doing the car however Don.
It will stop real good for the next round with the new brakes but it won't matter of you cannot see.
