Re: L88 on ebay

Harold, I know the car well, it is one of the best ones there is. I agree that the best cars will continue to bring very strong money. BTW, I believe that the high bid is real money. My guess is that it will take about 500K to buy it.

Yes, it does not take much effort to describe a car like this.

[/ QUOTE ] According to my survey info this car was ordered in March of 69 but production was delayed due to the strike. The car was produced I believe on early June of 69 which is about 2/3rds into production run for the 69 model year. This car is one of the last L88s produuced with the closed chamber heads as production for the second design L88s started in late June of 69 or around vin 22000.

Re: L88 on ebay

Please anyone correct me if I am wrong, but I would think this is a late car or a second design L88. Most people I know split the '69 L88s as early or late, and the second design L88 has the ZL1 type closed chamber heads.

I thought the ZL-1 used open chamber heads.

[/ QUOTE ] Harold and Paul,
The L88 on ebay is equipped with the first design L88 engine. The second design L88 engine which went on production around vin 22000 or mid June of 69 is equipped with the open chamber heads revised camshaft, holley double pumper carb, stronger rod bolts. It is identical to a ZL1 engine except of course for the block material.

Steve,

Are you sure about the 2nd design L-88 using the same cam
as the ZL-1? I thought they were different. Also, the
1st design L-88 would have used the '842 aluminum heads
and the 2nd design would have used the '074 heads - correct?

[/ QUOTE ] I have heard conflicting reports about whether the second design L88s used the ZL1 cam but I was told by someone who is very knowledgable that this was indeed the case. As far as the head castings the first design engines used the 842 heads and the second design engines used the 074 heads.

I had the privelege to judge this car last year at Bloomington and it is one spectacular piece.

Jeez, wonder how much a red/black 'Benchmark' L88 would go for? Huh, anybody...Steve? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

One of my L88's is #21608 and was built on June 10 (K10). It's a documented 2nd design open chamber L88.

Re: L88 on ebay

It is fairly accurate to say the 074 'open chamber' heads appeared on the L88s just after the strike in 69. The 842 'closed chamber' units were used on the L88s prior to the strike. The 842 heads continued to be used with the L89 Corvettes until the end of 69 production. The 074 heads went on to be used on the 71 LS6 Corvettes.

Mark

Mark,

I'd really like to know what difference there was in the
piston designs between these two L-88 designs. Dome height
and/or configuration must have been different. Can you comment?

Re: L88 on ebay

I believe, based on what I (think I) know, that the difference between the L88 and the ZL1 was the composition of the block. In other words, when the ZL1 made the scene, the L88 was now using the open chambered head design, so, there would have been no difference there. I've read over the years reports that camshaft specs were different, but, that may or may not be the case.

The reason, I believe, for developing the open chambered design was ostensibly to create better burning of hydrocarbons. The end result was a better breathing engine that although had a reduction in compression (12.5/1 to 12.0/1), made more power. The redesigned piston (see PIC) simply reduced the 'squish' area between the piston and the cylinder head. Again, the result was better breathing (more power) with less pollutants escaping unburned.

Sounds like another vaulable L88 may be going soon. I think we're seeing nice original cars with good paperwork bringing strong dollars these days.
