Let's all go junkin' !!!
For all of us trying to restore our beloved cars back to
the way they came ( from the factory ), we are now being hit with another whole round of insanity - HARDWARE ! Take a look at these few items I have been following on ePay: This little intake manifold stud cost $127.28 http://webzoom.freewebs.com/nuch_ss3...8_1-127.28.jpg This original upper alternator adjusting bolt setup cost $212.49 http://webzoom.freewebs.com/nuch_ss3...o/4978_1_b.jpg This prize of valve cover bolts cost $406.00 http://webzoom.freewebs.com/nuch_ss3...o/c887_1_b.jpg These Muncie transmission mounting bolts cost $127.50 http://webzoom.freewebs.com/nuch_ss3...b_0-127.50.jpg Now, conversly, these little gems didn't seem so bad: Transmission to crossmember mounting hardware for $41.95 http://webzoom.freewebs.com/nuch_ss3..._1_b-41.95.jpg Transmission mount to tail shaft mounting hardware for $36.95 http://webzoom.freewebs.com/nuch_ss3..._1_b-36.95.jpg And lastly, how about an original SHP throttle arm for $225.00 http://webzoom.freewebs.com/nuch_ss3...c_1-225.00.jpg Who said that the little things in life didn't matter ! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/drool.gif I may have to consider spending Saturdays in local junkyards looking for these original hardware pieces. The $$ being spent here border on the insane. One of the few remaining things I needed to get for my restoration were original hardware. I put those off because the cost wasn't that big of an issue - THEN. Wish I had jumped the gun on this one...... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif Steve |
Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
This all gets me think about eBay as a company. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif
Does anyone want to wager a bet that eBay saw this coming. Could they have been that smart? Or just dump luck?? A short time ago, you couldn't give this stuff away. How many of you ( like me ) have, or had, boxes of original hardware just lying around getting rusty? Wish I had kept mine........ https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif Steve |
Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
Steve this was discussed also on the impala site and it was interesting. Here is the trend.

Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
It's not eBay's fault. We're the ones who tossed all those factory parts in the trash back in the day and now we're the ones who demand that our cars have all the factory parts in place. EBay and eBay sellers are just capitalizing on our own behavior.

Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
www.amkproducts.com has EXCELLENT replacement hardware. It would be great to hear from SCW or NOS Restos how they address the hardware/fastener situation. I myself have been restoring/replating my own MANGANESE Phosphate parts for several years.....

Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
Chuck,
I agree about AMK. However, when you are as anal about original hardware as I am, it doesn't leave you much wiggle room. Case in point would be the original bolts that were used to attach the brake backing plates to the rear axle tubes. Those were peculiar and are all but impossible to find aftermarket. I have looked long and hard but come up dry on those. Only possible solution is a doner car from the southwest ( no rust ). Haven't found that one yet. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif Later cars have different head markings. Hence the problem. Steve |

Did others see this trend coming, or just get lucky. Think about the ZL-1 block in another topic here. Someone had insight enough to save a "broken" block and one day it was re-united with the original car. Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
Has enybody besides me seen differnt hardware from cars built at different factories? I have several unrestored 68 Impalas, mostly east coast, but one from California. When I look at the original hardware, the head markings are different. All the east coast cars say RBW on some things and the same parts on the California one are not RBW.

Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
I'm restoring my 68 Van Nuys Camaro. It had very little original front end hardware on it. Years ago I found most of the original stuff to attach the sheetmetal on big cars but I haven't worried about some of the other bolts. Most of the Van Nuys stuff I have is RBW. I've seen the Anchor bolts on 67's and a few on 68's. The capital C was found on 69's. I'm glad I did it years ago because it's hard to find these cars in the yards now.

I can't atest to different hardware being used between the separate assembly plants, but I can tell you that they used different hardware in the same plants. Several hardware suppliers were used to ensure an adequate supply during the assembly process. Once a bin of bolts got low, more were added. No one cared about that. We shouldn't either, as long as they are technically correct. Case in point, I saw an original 69 RA-3 Firebird that was totally unmolested. Never taken apart. I took particular interest in the fasteners on this car. One item that struck me was the 4 large bolts used to mount the Muncie 4-speed to the bell housing. The left two were TR head markings and the right two were RSC head markings. I know for a fact that this particular car was never apart, so no chance of the bolts being replaced. I addressed a question concerning this to the Corvette guys and they told me that both sides of the line had bins of bolts. One guy grabbed bolts from one bin and the other guy grabbed bolts from another bin. The Vette guys are all over stuff like this. No need to look any further than the NCRS on topics of this nature. I think of some of the parts I tossed in the scrap pile 25 years ago and I just shake my head. The smart guys in those days just put parts in their attics and the many more of us just tossed stuff. 1975: Off comes the dual-snorkle LS-6 air cleaner and on goes the gold anodized velocity stack. 2006: $3,000 for a dual snorkle LS-6 air cleaner on eBay. I wonder what's getting tossed off of ZO-6 Vettes and new GT-500s these days??? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif |
Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
Back about 15 years ago you wouldn't have imagined what the Dodge boys were "throwing out." We would receive a crate or two every few weeks from Team Viper when we were building the Project Pit Viper for the magazine back then. Dont know why I've been keeping the car and the rest of this stuff so long. Oh well, they dont take up much room and the Viper makes for a great work bench out in the garage. I guess I'll hold them another 10 years or so til they start restoring these cars and they need the original parts. I can always put them ebay with a starting date of 2012 https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i3...lcarday001.jpg How about an NOS rear differential? Actually, it wasn't NOS back then, It was just plain NS (New Stock) http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i3...a/PC310003.jpg Or piles of 92 and 93 factory exhaust systems, including one of the prototype non-catalytic sets from the 1992 Viper Indy 500 Pace Car Program (manufactured by Walker). Just imagine if this was a pile of chambered exhaust sets from '69. I could retire! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i3...a/PC310005.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i3...a/PC310006.jpg Or a few sets of rims and tires like this 1992 zero mile set on the right: http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i3...a/PC310008.jpg |

Steve sell the stuff now and when it all goes for billions in 15 years you can say you missed again, lol. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
Wow, you're absolutely right. I could be in danger of making a profit for once in my life! I better bail out of these parts now...EJECT, EJECT, EJECT! = (sell, sell, sell)

Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
Or hold it until it is repo'd and get repo prices. That is what I am experiencing with many parts.

Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
Wow. I still have a bucket of engine bolts in the attic from 10 years ago. I need to check them for hidden treasure.
|
Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
Dave,
You're only one state away. I'll give you $25.99 for the whole bucket. A good deal for loose items - wouldn't you say https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smirk.gif Steve |
Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
Those bucket-o-bolts come in real handy. I finally spent a day sorting though my 30-year collection and found most of the exact same bolts that were up on ebay. They have really come in handy for my GM and Mopar projects over the years. A buddy of mine almost had a coronary when he sent me a photo of the obscure bellhousing bolts for his 71 Hemi 4 speed Charger (an original Mr. Norm's car) and I sent him a complete set I found in the pile of bolts at no charge. He's been working on this eternal project for 20 years and I figured this was one less hurdle for him to jump over. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
Hardware has been something that I have always kept from every care I tore apart dating back into the early 80's and now have seperated bins for individual bolts, nuts and washers as well as a huge drawer full of misc hardware. Clips are also something I have always kept.
I always call on anyone selling a Chevelle as a parts car or parting one out. I tell them to call me when the car is stripped and I will finish it and they are always amazed at how much hardware I can remove from a car they thought was "stripped to the bone". Regarding different head markings, this is also true on the Chevelles as I have found by the RBW or TR valve cover bolts and the 12 point horn attaching bolts (mainly on Leeds cars) as opposed to a 6 point. These are just a couple examples. Rick |
Re: Let's all go junkin' !!!
Great I have saved bots and clips for 70 chevelles and now 68 camaro. I have about 100 pounds worth. i will now restore them.I looked for 3 yeas for 2 screws for the rear gas tank bolts in my 70 chevelle. Finally found them.
Good news for the bolt horders. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif PJ |
