69 Chevelle SS...decisions

Hi all,

1st post here (sound of bell ringing).

I have a Non numbers matching 69SS. Car now has a 454 and made 600hp on the dyno with Oval port heads and a flat tappet cam (runs 11.30`s @ 120). It is a nice cruiser and looks day 2 if you can dig it (sorry, I just couldn;t resist).

I am in the midst of doing the body work and am at the following fork in the road. Do I:

A) put in an 8 point roll cage to keep it safe (I only go to the track 1-2 times a year)

B) no cage (and hope to keep it shiny side up) and just keep it as a hot day 2 street car.

Just thought I would ask you opinions.

I am going to paint it tuxedo black and may add the ss side stripe.

for those that are interested, it was built in Canada (Oshawa)and cam as follows:
front disks, buckets, Z25 SS trim, 396/350, M21, 3.55 posi, lemans blue with dark blue vinyl top, parchment interior, PS, PB.

Hey Chris...Welcome to the site. If it only sees the track once or twice a year, I wouldn't put the cage in it. Black 69's. I like em.

my vote is for no cage at 1-2 times per year. black with white side stripe. torq thrust on rear with m@h cheater slicks. torq thrust on front with redline tires. i also love day 2 type cars. best of luck mike

NO CAGE NO CAGE NO CAGE! There have been enough reall cars turned into race cars already! The ones still out there need to be preserved! You should be able to pick up a roller with a cage pretty reasonable if that is the way you want to go.I wouldn't put a cage in a fine looking car like that! NO SIREE BOB! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Black, NO stripes, no trim. Cragars and Lakewoods.

No cage, keep the factory color and trim, cragars/redlines or maybe some vintage white letters, keep the day 2 mods bolt-on so you can return to stock if needed..if it wasn't a real SS car then the black would be awesome..stock color will give you more value down the road if you have to sell it.

Re: 69 Chevelle SS...decisions

I would keep it very close to the way it looked as delivered. There are not that many cars left that retain their as delivered look and equipment. Tires and wheels are minor. Paint and equipment is another.

I have seen many cars with added on options. I have seen too many cars with options such as air conditioning with the system in pieces and hacked up because the guy had to add some fancy chrome or other mods and their was no room or way to reconnect the air.

Engines are another area where people start adding the bright and shinny stuff and chuck the original GM parts. Its getting to where I swear that less than a half of the preserved cars still have their factory intake, carb, valve covers and air cleaner.

If your car was a no engine, no trans, needs every body panel repaired car, I would say do what you want. But, you have an original SS that is pretty original and its getting hard to find original cars. Keep it original, for down the road if circumstances ever force its sale, it may be worth more and an easier sale.

Re: 69 Chevelle SS...decisions

Thanks for all of the replies.

As for color, I am not CRAZY about lemans blue and at any rate, when I bought the car it was black and I loved it...always regretted going to the current blue.

I understand the opinion that has been echoed regarding resale value down the line but this has never, nor will it ever, be a deciding factor in any automible decision. I strongly beleive in enjoying what I own for me and not the next guy. I do undersatnd what you are trying to say though, and appreciate your input.

I like the idea of torque thrusts & red lines with the red side stripe. Wonder how that stripe would look though with a parchment interior?

I`d say wheels are gonna be cragars or TT`s...we`ll have to wait until spring. Tried a set of S/S`s on my buddy had and here is how they looked...

As fopr bolt on stuff, I have the following Sun Super Tach, bouyght NOS with chrome cup and orig bracket. It is going to look killer...

Chris...There are a couple of pictures of my Black 69 with the TT wheels on it somewhere in the members section, if you want to see what it would look like with them.

The car looks great with the Cragars...especially with the Black wall tires. Now all you need to do is put back the wheel well trim. Good luck.

I also like the no trace of an antenna.

Dan.

I also agree that the red stripe tires and red side stripe would look odd with the Parchment interior.

Re: 69 Chevelle SS...decisions

You are screwing up orig color so you might as well go red interior to match the redlines and the red stripes. Or stay with Lemans blue- parchment

Screwing up? Wow. That`s a little harsh don`t you think? Try to keep an open mind...Beleive it or not there are some of us who just consider ourselves "car guys".

Don`t get me wrong, I think it is neat to see cars that are 100% correct but as long as I am footing the bill (on my cars) I`m gonna build em the way I like em. sorry.

Chris...relax! It's all good. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

He was just saying that since you are changing the color...change the interior color to match

Nice Chevelle

Re: 69 Chevelle SS...decisions

Sorry Chris...I didn't mean it to sound harsh. It was meant in the context of you are no longer going with the trim tag coded color so why stick to the trim tag coded interior. I love parchment interior but others are right that it would clash with red stripes and redline tires. But a red interior on a black car is one of my favorites. I am known to have a couple modified non trim tag spec cars.

Re: 69 Chevelle SS...decisions

I'm with Charley, I love black on red. And I agree, once you've decided to change the paint color, its pretty minor changing the interior, especially on a Chevelle, where everything is available. If cost or convenience is a factor, you can always go black inside, as the carpet and dash are already black, right? I would buy new seat covers and headliner, and SEM dye the rest.

I'm not a white/parchment interior hater (and I'm someone who's bored with black interiors), but I prefer them with blues and greens. Those interiors just seem kind of stark against black paint, even when white tops or stripes are included. At least compared to red, which contrasts with the black so well.

Please cut Charley some slack, he rarely picks inflammatory words in his posts, even when guys seem to be looking for a scrap. Just another example of how ambiguous some words and phrases can be when posted on the web.

Man, that looks great just as it sits. Put the wheelwell trim back on, add the side stripe in white, maybe some repop Firestone Wide Oval white letters. Go with the stock LeMans Blue with the white interior because you'll get really tired of hearing "why did you change colors?" constantly.

This car looks just like an L78 Day 2 with Cragars that was for sale here about a year or more ago. Supercar Workshop, I think.

Re: 69 Chevelle SS...decisions

No harm meant to Charley.

I actually really like the parchment interior. Kinda make sthe car "classy".

As it sits now the paint is stripped and front clip is off. I have also removed the interior.

I`ll keep you all posted as to what the color choice ends up but it`ll prob. be black (easier for us color blind guys to see).

p.s. on another note, can a bucket seat 4 speed car be ordered without a console? I may put mine back to stick and not sure if I want a console or not.

Thanks!

Chris

I am with Bill. (427TJ) Looks bad as it sits. Sounds like a real good running car too. The way it looks and the way you have it set up is right on for 1969-70 era. No roll bars in those days. But you could run your car without that stuff at that time. It looks just like it should sitting at Burger King on a warm summer nite in 1969. Cragars and to me the color, is right on.
