For as many times as I've heard the "kid dies in 'Nam, dad stores the car, etc..." story, (and I'm sure many of us have heard this tale, as the car is still stashed), to find one that is not only true but highly documented is unbelievable. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif
Let me rephrase that, that car is awesome! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif

Re: Gibb Show in La Harpe

Actually, the story is really more tragic than it sounds. Robert Lee was stationed at Fort Bragg when the wheels were stolen from the car and the car was across the street at a Chevy dealership the night that he was killed. Earlier that day, Robert and a friend had been out at a bar when some locals began picking on a young black man who had tried to order a drink. Racial tensions were high in NC at this time and Robert stepped in and told the guys to leave the fellow alone. Late that night, Robert and his friend left the bar and decided to go across to the Chevy dealer to see if the car was finished before heading back to Fort Brag. As they walked back to their barracks, they were attacked from behind and found the next morning in the ditch by the side of the road. Robert was dead and his friend didn't see the assailants. Robert's Mom was devestated and refused to sell the car. After her death, the father did a few things to the car to get it ready for a few shows, but got sick himself and passed away before showing the car. Speaking to the family was heartbreaking as you could hear the pain in their voices...

Re: Gibb Show in La Harpe

It's actually gets worse Ken. Robert's sister Jerri, who was selling the car was telling me about how devestated her mother was at losing Robert at just 19 years old. I offered my condolences and said that it must have been devestating. She then told me how she too lost her son at 19 in a motorcycle accident...and had lost her job a few years earlier and was still unemployed!!! We must have talked for over 2 hours and I truly felt for the woman and family. Very sad indeed....

Mark, I felt bad when I first read about the 67 L78 and the circumstances surrounding its' preservation. Now that I have read your posts on the circumstances of the young owners death it is just a disaster. As you said, very sad indeed.

Ken, thanks for posting the pictures.

As usual, Diana and I had a great time. Hats off to Kenny, Jerry, Nancy, Bob, Nancy, Helen and all the others who make this show so much fun.

It is always fun to show the funny car at La Harpe, seems each year some one new comes up to me and adds some history to the car, through stories and/or pictures. This year it was a gentleman who worked for Gibb, but from time to time would help out on the race teams, including the funnycars.

One of the highlights of the show was the presence of Jim Hayter. On October 8, 1971 at the AHRA World Points Finals in Fremont, CA, Jim set a new record running a 9.63 @ 143 MPH to win the Pro Stock World Championship. He was driving the Fred Gibb sponsered 1969 ZL-1 Camaro, #1, now owned by Bill Porterfield.

Accordning to Bill, the car may be retired from racing, as he just recently put the original engine block back in the car. Glad I got to see Bill hammer it a couple of times.

BTW, Jim is still racing today.

Here is the car on the 2006 Gibb show plaques.

And of course, thanks to Helen, and the Gibb family.
See you again soon. Schonye

Mark, Where was this Camaro advertised at when the family decided to sell? Do you know how much it was sold for? This looks to be the best L78 '67 Camaro that I've ever seen! Do you or anyone else have any more pictures of the car that you could post? I'd like to be able to read the display. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Gibb Show in La Harpe

Tim, it's a bit of a long story, but the car was on ebay for about 12 hours before I called. The ad was poorly written and many thought it was a fake. I called and spoke to Jerri and knew that the car was real. She gave me an asking price that was likely fair for such a significant car, but it was more than I could afford. I told her my maximum price based on what I could afford and said that she would probably get what she was asking. Much to my surprise she said that I could have it for my offer if I wanted. I sent her a $1,000 non-refundable deposit over night and then hired someone to look at the car for me. He reported back that they car was what she described and I called her to finalize the deal. That's when she told me her terrible story and I knew she needed the money. So, I told her that I could get her more money for the car, but couldn't afford to pay more myself. She insisted that I buy it or she was going to put it away again because she couldn't go through the pain of showing it to anyone else. I asked her to give me a few hours and I would see if I could find someone to buy it based on my word and some pics. I called Dave Miner because I knew he had a love of unrestored cars and he had the resources to buy the car. Also, he bought a car from me in the past based on my word and I felt he would trust me again. Dave agreed to buy the car for more than I could afford, but he still got a very fair deal on this amazing car. I called Jerri and told her about the deal and she must have thanked me 100 times! I took nothing from Jerri or Dave for setting the deal up except that Dave refunded the money I spent to have the car inspected and he got Jerri to refund my deposit. I was happy to have helped her and I know that Dave will do the car and Robert's memory the justice it deserves https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif As for the price, that's really only Dave's business now...

Great time over the weekend! The Monmouth and LaHarpe folks pulled off another perfect pair of events. We made our reservations for next year before leaving town. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

Our thanks as well to Kenny & Anita, Jerry & Cathy, Bob & Nancy, Helen & Nancy, Kenny Tatman and the crew in Monmouth, and all the old and new friends in the communities we only get to see a couple of times a year. You all make us feel like we're coming home every time we pull into town. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

I won't try to list all the old friends we see at these events but I will say we seem to meet new ones everytime we attend. This year it was Ken Tibor. I fell for Ken's Nova when I first saw it here on the site. Well, let me tell you; the car is even better 'up close and personal'. And Ken and his wife are an absolute ball to be around. New experiences with every trip eh?: Ken even learned how to get Diesel fuel from the pump when the station is "Closed"! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif (Long story!) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

For now, it's back to work and time to shop for a new camera...... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif Gotta be ready for SCR9!!!!

Hope everyone had a safe trip back home and we see you all again Aug. 31st!

Re: Gibb Show in La Harpe

Thanks, Mark for relating more of the 67 L78's story, and thanks again for the phone call that day.....

Since the car had never been shown and I'm only 30 miles from Laharpe, I thought it should be shown and appreciated. I have done nothing to the car except polish it (I didn't rub it out and change the original paint texture) and replace the Fenton mags (still have 'em) with the proper FC wheels (thanks Wilma) and redlines. The spare is original and never down. I haven't cleaned it underhood or underneath - it is that nice.

I feel fortunate to be the caretaker now. I guess I should put a page on my web site with some more details....

Great show, as usual. Thanks to all. And I still haven't met many of the people here that were there, probably because I rarely sit with my cars - I'm always roaming around looking and admiring all the others!

Dave
