67 camaro production numbers
a friend of mine has a 67 rs camaro convert. he says its originally a 396 car. is there such a thing as an rs convertible 396 car ? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: 67 camaro production numbers
Sure, if it's an SS/RS.

Re: 67 camaro production numbers
I beg to differ. I knew of a white 1967 RS 396 Camaro that was (and probably still is) in SoCal. It had the RS steering wheel, hideaway lights, RS emblem in the grill, RS on the front fenders,RS gas cap, etc. The middle aged lady who owned it worked off of Manchester and Lincoln Aves in Anaheim...and worked at Earls Plumbing supply...
So unless she owned a super rare "one off" 1967 Camaro...it had to be available. If I'm wrong, oh well... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 67 camaro production numbers
Of course...I went to camaros.org and found this...
[ QUOTE ] L35 396ci/325HP V8 4BC - SS only, Q-Jet L34 396ci/350HP V8 4BC - SS only, Q-Jet L78 396ci/375HP V8 4BC - SS only, Holley L78/L89 396ci/375HP V8 4BC - SS only, Holley, Al head [/ QUOTE ] I knew of the white car above starting in 1980...and like I said...a middle aged lady drove it. It was an original black plate car...so I assume that she had it since new... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif So Camaros.org is saying you couldn't get a RS396...Hmmm https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif |
Re: 67 camaro production numbers
I owned an original SS 396 1967 convertible, and found all research I read indicated the RS option trim on a 396 car would be superceded by the SS option. But you never know, the trim holes line up, and they could have been missed on the assembly line, or changed later. The steering wheel cap is easily removed. The SS car also had a different gas cap, made from aluminum, with the SS(396) or SS350 designation.
There were a bit over 5000 396 cars built in 1967, and many of them were SS/RS cars, the RS trim was just not needed, because the option was so obvious-hide away headlights, lower valance turn signals, lower valance back-up lights. Many people have been mistaken that the "SS" option included the hide-aways, but this is not true. Probably because the "RS" trim was not on the combination SS/RS cars. |
Re: 67 camaro production numbers
this camaro has the rs emblem on the fenders near the front , the hide-aways, with the valance, and the rs gas cap. is there any other for sure ways of telling that its a big block car ?

Re: 67 camaro production numbers
Ken...that's what gets me...why would a middle aged lady (45-ish then) change out all the emblems on her Camaro? Oh well, I guess weirder things have happened, huh? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
It was her daily driver...six days a week. I drove by that car every day to go to work. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif |

Re: 67 camaro production numbers
My March car is a 396 and is 4P

Re: 67 camaro production numbers
Again, it would have to be an SS/RS to get the 396. There were no 67 RS 396 Camaro's built, ever. Remember, an RS was an appearance option, and not a performance option like the SS. The most power you could get in a 67 Sport Coupe or an RS, was the L30, at 275 hp. If that wasn't enough, you would have to step up to the plate and order the L48, L35, L78, (RPO Z27)

Re: 67 camaro production numbers
My car is a 3L 4N. RS/SS, no big block without SS option. 4P, ss 350 or L30. Charley, are you talking about the pace car? Roger

Yes

Re: 67 camaro production numbers
I believe CRG has other SS396 4P cars also. Kurt ?

Re: 67 camaro production numbers
There's a red-on-red 67 L78 that was on eBay a year or two ago. Original 396/375hp engine, Muncie 4-spd, 4P car with protect-o-plate. That car is now in WA state, belongs to a friend of mine. Actually, he's not much of a friend because he won't sell me the car...

[/ QUOTE ] Bruce, she might have wrecked the car (daily driver!) and the new panels were from another RS that wasn't an SS. My guess is that she rear-ended someone and the repair shop put a replacement RS front end on and her old 396 Turbo Jet emblems. Stranger things have happened, as the saying goes. |

I also have seen cars that were worked on by sons for mothers and things were changed a little due to what was available at the time when repairs were made, also have seen cars with very long ownership where stuff was stolen or just pulled from the cars to make them less appealing, basically they loved the car but were tired of buying stuff the kids were stealing off them. |
Re: 67 camaro production numbers
So unless proven otherwise by window or build sheets, any real 396 car is an SS first and no way paperwork could even be generated to stop SS trim from overiding the RS trim on RS cars....so the only way any RS cars could have come through badged as RS would be by result of assembly line mistake or intent? . 1967 is unique being able to decode by cowl tag but isn't 4P for SS350 cars? ~ Pete

Re: 67 camaro production numbers
I've read that 4P was used for L30/M20 cars, SS350 cars, early Z28's, and early SS396/375 cars.

Re: 67 camaro production numbers
That red on red SS396 was my old car and it was a 4P car also. I think there are 3 known 4P L78's...my old car, Charlie's and Grumpy Jenkin's car.

Re: 67 camaro production numbers
