Re: Jungle Jim's Match Racer
I good friend of mine saw that car at Capitol in 69/70 era. He said Grumpy was there with Jungle tuning the ZL1.
He was running a B/MP Candy Nova at the time. He said it had a sound of its own! Wayne |

Liberman's accident happened on rt 3 West chester pike. hit a red arrow bus( septa / public tran bus co)
a good friend of my family, Jack Rusin(Jack the ripper car) (who was killed in a motorcycle accident 2 years ago) http://www.junglepam.com/photos/012603JJSCAN14B.jpg (center standing) was good friends with Jim Liberman & Pam(he drove the match car a few times) donated a fire suit to garlis. if you're ever at the garlits museum in ocala Fl. you'll see one of his cars, a fire suite, the news aticle about the accident and part of the key that was broken off in the vette's ignition. more pics at Jungle Pam's Site |
Re: Jungle Jim's Match Racer
With a sig of '1 of 311', I'm assuming you have an '69 L89 Camaro?? Very cool.
Thought it was the Sk. X-way, but, been wrong before https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif |
Re: Jungle Jim's Match Racer
I remember it like yesterday. I believe the accident occurred at the over pass on rt3, as you enter Westchester eastbound.

Re: Jungle Jim's Match Racer
Things were not all peaches and cream for Jim at the time and I heard all kinds of crazy rumors, But truth be told...
Only Jim knows what really happened that day https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif God Speed JJ https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: Jungle Jim's Match Racer
Because of this thread, I had a conversation today with a long time friend, Jim's brother. I sent him this thread which he has been reading and totally denied that Jim may have intentionally crossed any line heading into oncoming traffic. He confirmed Jim was driving his Corvette on Rt.3 when he crested a hill and the cars front end went airborne loosing control. If he was a few seconds earlier or later he wouldn't have hit the SEPTA bus and probably would just would have ended up in the field.
Maybe I can convince him to register so he can comment further. |

No one has to come to this fourm to back anything a family member had happen to them. He is more than welcome to come post and tell his stories about Jungle Jim and share any pics of Jims race cars though. |
Re: Jungle Jim's Match Racer
I agree with Jeff's thoughts. Also, it's refreshing to hear the 'intentional' rumour put to rest.

Re: Jungle Jim's Match Racer
The thing I liked about watching Jungle, was his longgggg burn outs. I also loved watching Pam running back. WOW
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif Than's a whole new meaning for " BUILT IN THE USA" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif |
Re: Jungle Jim's Match Racer
Going back to the original question asked here... Jungle Jim's brother has indicated this previously:
"Steve Kanuaka built the car for match racing and it had fiber glass front end it also ran with 2-4brl carbs. Dutch Ergang worked for Steve in the shop and also was a head grinder for Jenkins. The car did not last to long because Steve lost insterest in it as far as I know the car is still in existence" He went on to say that he was not sure that he wanted to see the Camaro running as it looked when JJ ran it. No pretty uniforms but JJ was a real showman. JJ gave the fans what they really came to see; the most popular funny car on the match race circuit. Greg Steich of Pottstown PA was also a JJ fan. |
