Correct Color for 1970 Z28 Wheels
 

Fellow gearheads, Im doing a complete nut and bolt rotisserie resto on my 1970 4 speed RS Z28. Can anybody out there in cyberspace tell me the correct color for the original 15 inch spoked rims. A manufactor and paint code would be awesome. Thanks.

Do you want to shoot it out of a gun, or spray bomb em?

Products for both are on the market now and the color match is excellent. The trick to get the "look" is in the application. I have the PPG # also.

I am in the process of restoring my original wheels also and just this week I was trying to buy the paint. After calling all of my local paint suppliers, it seems that Ditzler Code #DDL-32961 has been discontinued. I tried the aersol can product that is on the market now and it was way too dark and not even close to the original color. I had used this Ditzler paint code a number of years ago and it was great. In fact, I will be painting mine soon. Here is a shot of my 70 Z28 original spare tire/rim, showing the color.

I will drop it by my local PPG distributor and have them match it. There is also a rough like texture to it, simulating a cast mag wheel.

Anyone know where you can get the trim rings?

--------Couldnt help but notice the extra flashing inside the center hole of your spare, if thats what it is. Interesting that this would make it thru the entire manufacuring, painting, and then tire-mounting process. And then........never get touched by the past owners. Phil, I want to paint them with a HVLP spray gun and its important that the product has a catalyst for durability. I would appreciate it if you could get me the PPG paint code. I tried the Dupont code from nastyZ28.com and my local automotive paint shop didnt recognize that code as a current Dupont number. Thanks.

I just called my PPG supplier in the Seattle area, and they have all the components to mix the Original LAQUER ONLY formula. THe Suede additive gives the paint its rough texture. This was to simulate real cast wheels ala American Torque Thrust.
The Original Laquer paint has no clear coat and did not hold up well, if washed regularly with cleaners and brushes.
Any other type paint or powder coating might look GOOD, but not Correct Original Factory Look.
Below I will show misc pics of CORRECT 1st (70-74) Trim Rings and the later 2nd design (77-81) Trim Rings which many people use (incorrectly) on 70-74 Z-28's. There are also different designs of lug nuts and BowTie Center caps.

Try this one... PPG DDL32961 - Dark Grey. Spray it on dry. You will need to duplicate the original "pebbled" appearance on the surface of the wheel. If you get it right - the wheel will color shift from a darker grey to a lighter grey depending on how the light reflects off of it.

Others call it "Shadow Grey" for this reason.

You guys must have thought I was seeing things, and actually I think I have been. Had a minor operation (per the doc) that doesnt seem so minor and Ive been wolfing down percocets. Phil, One of the components of the PPG LAQUER formula is SUEDE ADDITIVE, which achieves the "rough" finish of the Factory Original finish. I cant suggest exactly how to apply with what technique, but I would THIMK the suede additive accomplishes the desired effect.....

I suspect that is the same Suede Additive that was originally used to paint the top portion of metal dashboards on 69 cars. They have that slightly 'rough' texture.

I am not sure but the finish on this wheel looks too smooth to be original paint and the shade looks off.

If you get close it has a rough cast aluminum look to it. I will take some close up shots tomorrow.

Here are a few pictures of my spare thats never been mounted. It looks a little to gold color but I think that's because the flash went off. The inside if you look close you can see the overspray from the gray paint, showing the gray was painted last and NOT masked. Last pic is one mounted on the car note the correct lug nuts, embossed center cap, 5/8" valve stem hole (70 only up till about may, june) and valve stem extension and original tire.
