feb. 71 copo
hey guy's thought you would like to see my feb. 71 copo z28. as i stated in an earlier forum it has 16,354 miles & 85% of it's original paint. i also have lot's of documentation . the owner was one of my dad's friends who bought the car new & turned it into a race car. he said the car was ordered in jan. but because he got the tall rear spoiler & the custom cloth interior he didn't recieve the car till march 12th.the door sticker states feb. 71. i've been wanting this car since i was about 14 years old ,i'm now 38 & persistance & lot's of money finally paid off.

Re: feb. 71 copo
Hi, and welcome to the SYC. If your car is a 1971, and it has the larger spoiler in the back and the spoiler in the front then your car was equipped with RPO D-80. For 1971 the Z-28 got the short 1 pc rear spoiler standard and the previous COPO 9796 was retooled to fit better and became RPO D-80 and for 1971 included both front and rear spoliers.
RPO= Regular Production Option. Here is the main Public relations Photo set from the 1971 Camaro roll out. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...PO/Cnv0896.jpg Phil |
Re: feb. 71 copo
yes i have both front & rear ,if i can get the photos to load i would send as many pics of the car & docs as anyone would like.

Re: feb. 71 copo

Hi Jeffery, welcome to the site. Glad to see another upstate SC member here. Are you going to the Simpsonville show this weekend? I hope to be there. If you are there look me up. I will have the only Beaumont there.

i was told the tall spoiler didn't replace the short spoiler till about april or mid of 1971. [/ QUOTE ] COPO 9796 became avalible on April 26, 1970. but due to quality problems production did not get going until late May. At the end of the 1970 SCCA season, Chrvrolet got out of SCCA Trans-Am Racing but liked the appearance of the old COPO Spoiler Package, so it then then became RPO D-80 and optional on any 1971 Camaro. In 70 the Short 1 pc spoiler was RPO D-80. The short 1 pc spoiler was standard with Z-28 in 1971. For '71 RPO D-80 was an improved version of the last varient of old COPO 9697 package and consisted of both the front and real spoilers and was vastly improved in fit and appearance. By 72 the short 1 pc spoiler was disco, and RPO D-80 was the only spoiler you could get. Hope this helps. Please post pictures of your car. We would like to see it. Re: feb. 71 copo
70 copo ,send me your e-mail & maybe you can get the pictures loaded to the site for me. as for our discusion on the copo spoiler mad mike @ second gen. group e-mailed me a while back & his exact words were that the tall spoiler was not standard option till sometime in april of 71, therefore if your cars build date is earlier it is a copo or some sort of dealer override order. many other camaro sites state that the copo option 9796 was available till mid year of 71 when it replaced the small spoiler.i have personally owned 4 norwood built 71 z28's early year model cars & also just purchased another rs z28 norwood built jan. 71 & it has a small spoiler just like all the early year cars i seem to run into.thanks jeff

Re: feb. 71 copo
I had a 71z that was delivered 12/1/70. I still have the original POP and window sticker for the car. It had the tall spoiler on it. The window sticker shows D80 Air Spoiler Option.

Re: feb. 71 copo
You are correct COPO..Chuck may have misread it.
|
Re: feb. 71 copo
Discussed on page 1 of this thread. RPO D-80 is correct.

Re: feb. 71 copo
Thanks for the positive feedback on my car. As for future plans, I'm leaving it as is for now. I'm not going to put it back to factory original.
In response to the earlier comments about the rear spoiler, the tall 3-piece did not replace the 1 piece until April 1971 (my car was built in February 1971). The following comes from an email between Mad Mike and myself discussing the subject. "...Prior to to April 1971, the tall spoiler had to be requested, most easily, via the COPO 9796 to insure the correct spoiler went on the car, otherwise GM would have slapped whatever was in the bin on the car (the 1-piece spoiler). Since it was requested, the build sheet might give this away. It would still say D-80, but the code in the specific box may indicate the COPO number, or it may be hand written on the sheet to put the other spoiler on. GM knew what COPO 9796 was, it didn't expire just because 1970 ended. After April 1971, it became unnecessary and irrelevant (RPO D-80, regular production order). Prior to that, if someone wanted the cool tall spoiler, all someone had to do was drop the COPO number, and it would start ringing bells. Without the build sheet, it is impossible to prove or disprove anything, since anyone with a drill could install a spoiler." This should clear up any confusion. Jeff |
Re: feb. 71 copo
pulled the car out of storage this weekend.will gut the interior this week to look for a build sheet.did pull the drivers corner spoiler off & there was no paint under it just a grey looking primer or sealer of some sort ,sanded a small spot & red oxide was under it. also does anybody know of an option or code for having gold drip rail moldings.
