Copo or Yenko ? How to tell ?
My friend has a big block Camaro and he has reason to believe it is a Yenko or a COPO. How can we find out if it is either ?? Thanks

Re: Copo or Yenko ? How to tell ?
Why would he think that? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
Also, you need to give more specifics on the car if you want a specific response. Your question is way too general. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif |

I know, sorry about that. I will talk with him soon to get more specific details. Thanks for your reply though.

Re: Copo or Yenko ? How to tell ?
Look for the X11 or X44 code on the trim tag for starters. Get all the information off the trim tag on the firewall and post it here. Also post the VIN or most of it to help determine the date range and if it agrees with the trim tag. Does it have a cowl hood that's original to the car? Does it have a 12 bolt posi rear(if so look for the codes on the passenger side facing forward, it should be BE followed by some numbers and a G like BE0405G1), it should have power disc brakes, there should be no holes in the fender for engine size emblems, it should have a big block heater core with the hoses in the middle, does it have a radiator with a curved neck, if the trans is a 4 speed get the codes off it to determine if it's an M22. Hope this helps for starters.

I'll check all of this out. I appreciate all of your guys help, maybe we can find out if it is either one of these cars. Thanks. Brad

Re: Copo or Yenko ? How to tell ?
I would start by grabbing the VIN# and checking it HERE...but hey, that's just me... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Copo or Yenko ? How to tell ?
The hood on the car which is a cowl, (original),does have a 12 bolt . He thinks the car came out of
Detroit between Oct. 15th to Oct 30th of 1968. The car is rally green with black interior, bucket seats, console in the floor, the steering wheel is wood, and the console where the shifter is wood too. The car is a 4-speed. Thanks for everyone's help on this. Brad |
Re: Copo or Yenko ? How to tell ?
The VIN # is 124379n544864. The trans is an m22. It does not have anything stamped on the trim tag (no x-11 or x-44 codes) Thanks to all.

Re: Copo or Yenko ? How to tell ?
Jeff, What does an M22 have to do with anything? Jason |
Re: Copo or Yenko ? How to tell ?
I think that would have something to do with the transmission. Thanks.

Re: Copo or Yenko ? How to tell ?
Too early for a COPO. Does the M22 have the partial VIN stamped in it and does it match the car's VIN? If the car was an X11 or X44 code with a matching VIN M22 then it would be a COPO since that is the only solid lifter engine that would be put in the car. If the M22 is original, it sounds like it could be a Z28 but the cowl hood is probably not original to the car, that's too early for the cowl hood option.

Re: Copo or Yenko ? How to tell ?
What I meant is why couldn't it be a M20 or 21.

Re: Copo or Yenko ? How to tell ?
It could be an M20 or M21 but that wouldn't be any proof of a COPO. The M22 would prove it's either a Z28, L78 396 or COPO. If his M22 matches, it could be a Z28 or L78 car.

You could get an M20 or an M21 with any of those cars. It takes more to prove these cars then just having a tranny match the VIN. His VIN is to early for any COPO or Yenko so you can rule out those. Rick H. [/ QUOTE ] Why do you disagree? If the only engines you could get the M22 with were the solid lifter engines than an original VIN matching M22 would indicate the car had a 302, an L78 396/375 engine or an L72 427. But since the VIN is dated too early for the L72 427 then it would indicate the car is a Z28 or L78 SS396. Now we all know the M22 could be a restamp but that's not even part of the discussion. M20 or M21 has nothing to do with trying to prove an original COPO, Z28 or L78. Yes, your Z28, L78 or COPO could have an M20 or M21 but the M22 should prove what the car could be. |
Re: Copo or Yenko ? How to tell ?
Rick & Jeff, I think you guys are saying the same thing but approaching it from different directions.
