72 Z/28 - Day 2 Brainstorming

Ok since seeing Chuck's car I have been doing more thinking. Here is what I have to work with. This car will be a Day 2 car. The original color is Mulsanne Blue with no stripes. Interior is supposed to be blue but now has black. I think I will stay with the black since most of it is there. The console is gone and it has a B&M floor shifter in there. I was thinking Hurst Dual Gate might be nice. I'm not thrilled with the hood and was thinking of going with an L88 hood. Need something to clear the motor. Gauges are newer Autometers mounted on top of the dash. I was thinking of relocating them to underneath. I like the thought of a Grant "Motion" type steering wheel to. Lots of ideas and not enough $ at the moment. But I want to start gathering parts.

Opinions, comments? Go ahead and start throwing them around. It's Day 2 talk!

White inner fenders on the wheel side with blue bulbs? Anybody ever hear of that?? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: 72 Z/28 - Day 2 Brainstorming

Leave the inner fenders alone. Paint the brake drums white if you want and no lites. Headers should be white also. Mount the tach on the column or even the dash. Screw it down. Remember there are several day-2 combos. Some for just looks and some for performance. A little of each if you don't get carried away. I think performance should come first. I love lace! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

And you might think about one of THESE TOO! if you don't want to do the tunnel ram...

Re: 72 Z/28 - Day 2 Brainstorming

The L-88 scoop is the way to go... that hood looks awesome on those cars.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on it, you can just pull off the existing scoop and order the L-88 scoop (fiberglass or ABS) from JCWhitney... easy enough to do. I bought a couple different (L-88 & Stinger) ABS hood scoops from them so that I could make fiberglass copies of them. They are good quality, for not a lot of money.

Predicting the future:
I think the hobby is moving more toward restoring cars to the day2 condition. A lot of us are getting tired (and broke) after searching for that last damn date-coded, dog dish hubcap from 1969. There's nothing like having a car look just like you had it in high school: a time machine that takes you back to "funner times". Here's a shot of my charger back from 1987, it had been sitting since 1974 in this condition. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/82252-charger1987a.jpg It looks a lot better than it would have with the orginal 14x7 stock wheels. Here it is now, it has never had a set of stock wheels on it since January 10, 1970 the day after it was delivered. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/92664-front34a1.JPG

I think you will enjoy your car a lot more if you do it the way you want it and not the way it was originally. I would go with a set of fat Cragers in the back and skinnies up front and use the L88 hood. That would look sweet. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

You can buy those Lakewood Traction bars for $39.88 brand new from Summit.

Here's the link.

Don't forget to get Hood Pins too.

I agree. That is totally the route that I'm going with on my '68 Camaro... although the 2nd day look I'm doing is after it comes back from Motion as the Mind Bender https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif Only cosmetic thing left that I don't have is the mid-year Corvette side pipes, but I have a local friend that will sell me an unused set for $500.

There is so much that can be done to make the 70-73 Camaro's look bitchin' I'm jealous! That will be my next project (after I finish with all my current ones).

You're going to have so much more fun with the car doing it as a Day 2 car!

Darren give me a call we need to talk... I have some stuff you need for your day 2 look... The hood is up in the air, I like the L88 but I am attached to the Grump Lump. It all depends on what intake and carb set up. Just call me tonight. Mark

I am doing something along the same lines. I have some original, numbers cars and wanted one to play with. I bought a 70 Nova just for that reason. One of the local hot jobs around here when I was a kid was a 70 Nova with a 427. I am going that route, day 2, as close as I can get it to the one I remember.

The Day2 craze is great I have owned a 69 Z since 79 and have alot of the Day2 stuff on it. I bought a Grump Lump a couple of years ago and I might put it on.
I just set it on the hood for a couple of pics. What do you guys think?

I normally run a hole in the hood, it has a Blown 502 in it!!

Don't even consider the aero scoop. That is a late 1990's invention.

People are also getting tired of the car magazines pushing the latest g- machine part and 8 months later the very same magazine saying that same part you spent your $2000 on is now passe'.

This is a whitetopism. Notice how many sets of aftermarket wheels you see at the swapmeets anymore that are in a quantity of 3..not 4. That means somone bent/destroyed one and that particular wheel is now discontinued 1 year after after the person bought the complete set new.

Oh man, you guys are making me drool. After reading this post I have decided that my 70 Z/28 just might be going day 2.

Going with the aftermarket cowl hood only because I have it already and it has holes in it for the hood pins. No console, Hurst Super Shifter, SW tach on the column, water and temp under the dash, Lakewood traction bars (got them already), and my favorite Cragar SS wheels on all corners.

Sam in PA, I am betting you are agreeing with me right about now.

Brings back some great memories.

Excellent inputs here guys! Here are some more pictures. I already have the traction bars. Might I add that I have tested them and they seem to be working well. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif However, I have no idea what type they are. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Trying to figure out the engine details to. M/Ts and a "MOTION" fly eye Cal Custom air cleaner for starters?

Well, here's a picture of my '74 Z. I guess I would have to say it's day 2. The only thing I did since the original owner was change the back tires because they were worn out. The wheels and front tires he put on almost 30 years ago. I tracked him down and bought 2 of the original wheels from him. You can see them hanging on the wall just over the roof.

Re: 72 Z/28 - Day 2 Brainstorming

Darren did my car get the day 2 bug started here ?? LOL https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif and your car looks really nice .the motor has that day2 look aready i would look for a green fiberglass flex a lite fan and get a edelbrock tarantula intake also mentioned in this thread paint your headers with VHT "white" hi temp paint. now the interior if you have a B&M star shifter that'll be correct i've got the B&M quik-clik in mine.now for gauges i've got the U-41 gauge package in my camaro but i'm using sun blue-line oil press, volts and water temp gauges along with a sun blue line super tach. i did the same thing and removed the center console and mounted the shifter to the tunnel. now for the hood 3 types of scoops were used the grump lump, mopar pro-stock and the L88 any of these would look good.the hoods back then were just painted flat black not body color.now mine i've got a L88 hood but i grafted a grump lump on to it and it looks awesome,i'll get pics when it's finished. the wheels your running now didn't come out until the mid 70's so if i were you i would look into ansen sprint or us-indy mags.on mine i'm running hard to find 15x4 us-indy mags for the front.we always ran different rims back then or mismatched set like in my pics. you could run 15x10 torque thrust "D" for the rear and 15x4 slots on the front. ET wheels are still around and have the old gasser style wheels available ,those look cool too. here is some cool vintage wheelshttp://www.etwheels.com/et/classic5.html

How about a set of Gabriel High-Jacker air shocks to go along with the Lakewood traction bars.

Oh yeah, and maybe a mural across the deck lid. Now how many remember that??

I am making my list now.

Re: 72 Z/28 - Day 2 Brainstorming

Gotta' have an L88 hood on a 2nd Gen--no other hood really works, especially for a '70s/early '80s Day 2 look. Okay, maybe a Grump lump. 15-inch skinnies in front, 8 or 10-inchers out back--slots or American 200S with the cast spokes (as on njsteve's '70 Hemi Charger) or even Cragar S/S's. Turbo mufflers. Yellow Lakewood bars. Electric fuel pump(s). Big-block motor with M/T valve covers (or chrome Moroso for the early '80s look). Accel coil mounted on the firewall pass side. Tunnel ram or Edelbrock Torker with the angled carb mount. The possibilities are endless! I wanna' do a 2nd Gen Day 2 car now.

I just peeked at that ET wheels site and fell in love w/ these ones: http://www.etwheels.com/et/fueler.html

A set of 15X10's in the back w/ Mickey Thompson "Indy" (I-tread) tires would look brutally cool and very distinctive. Possibly a set of 15X6's in the front?
