ZL1 block on Ebay
 

There is a ZL1 block on ebay that needs some work. Thought someone may be interested.

The description says that it has solid water jackets, so it is for display or race only.

I know its a long shot, but does anyone know a way to remove block filler? I have heard it is not possible but I imagine there had to be an acid that will desolve concrete but not iron or aluminum.

Any ideas?

I never heard of any way to remove it! I was always under the impression that once filled always filled.That filler is sort of like a substance called CHICO which electricians use in conduit in service stations etc.Stuff is extremely hard.To remove CHICO you have to replace conduit and all so I am told.

Thanks for the info. I have heard the same thing. I just find it hard to believe that there is no a chemical that will dissolve the filler without touching the metal. Maybe the conduit is replaced because the cost is higher to remove the chico? I'm sure if a Hemi Cuda convertible was found and the original engine was filled they would find a way to remove it. Either way I believe a big block is steetable when filled as this one is. Besides, how many ZL1's get streeted around on a regular basis? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif.

While cleaning up the Sunoco Pump,it had conduit routed with wires & CHICO.As was required by the assembly instructions to prevent any arcing or ignition source.
I tried insufferably to pull the wire through,but to no avail.I removed the conduit & inspected it & tried pouring some chemical into it to let the wires loose.
No way!
I pitched the conduit & replaced the entire assembly.
That CHICO is some tough S***

Is this chico a black bakelite-like substance? I recently stripped my Wayne 60 pump, and eventually found that the stuff could be removed. Of course I had to try damn near everything, but after heating the conduit with a hand-held propane torch I was shocked watch how easily it flowed out. That's the stuff.
I used muratic acid,and it did move it some,but not as much as I wanted.It left a residue in it's path as well.
I called a local electrician friend,who told me to replace the conduit & wire.
He suggested not to even waste my time removing CHICO.

Even if you get the majority out the interior may be coated preventing heat transfer

--------I am not getting a sense of how full of Devcon the block is from the pics. Red Alerts water jackets were filled up ap. half way and it still ran water in the upper half. I could have driven on the street in that configuration. The old car just ran cool. Add to that the fact that aluminum block would dissipate heat better and you might get away with a partial Devcon fill-up...........Bill S

If you are that interested in that engine with the filler in it I would contact some Machine shops that do the filling and ask there opinion if it can be removed,or if the amount in it if the engine will run hot.I know for a fact that if you do not fill them up too much you can run them on the street.I am just not sure how much but if you really want to know I will call my machinist and ask him about it.He has been building High Performance racing engines for over thirty years and he will know the truth to the matter.I know he has filled many blocks for making monster engines.He would know if the material could be removed or not as well.

I've always heard partially filled is the trick setup...you get the stability at the bottom of the cylinder, yet the cooling where you actually need it (top of cylinder and head)...I have yet to try it, but it's on my list!

Thanks for the input everyone. I appreciate the offer Bobby and may take you up on it. Once the block gets here I will have a better idea of what I have and will let all of you know.

My street/strip 69 camaro has a 588 bowtie tall deck which is filled with hard block to the lower water pump bolt hole. It's 13:1 with Dart 360s. I run a four core with a flex fan and the car runs at 180. In stop and go traffic on a hot summer day it may spike to 195. It can be done.
