Deja vue....1965
During dinner on Saturday evening, Dan M. made a comment I thought was quite interesting. The "retro" Mustang is the talk of the American musclecar crowd, with examples showing up everywhere, from base cars to all out racecars and everything in between. Ford has once again hit a home run with this car. As in '65, Chevy has the Vette, which has a solid following, but no offering that can compete head to head with the 'Stang. Back then, Chevy was slow to respond, giving Ford and the Mustang a 2 year head start in the pony car market.
My question is, how long will Chevy/GM have to play catch up this time? |
Re: Deja vue....1965
We were talking about the same thing Saturday night at the Lombard cruise. We must have seen a dozen if not more late model Mustangs with superchargers etc. Instead of a Mustang competitor, GM/Chevy develops the SSR. A high $ limited production vehicle. I don't think that GM and their marketing people have a clue.

I don't think that GM and their marketing people have a clue. [/ QUOTE ] Pretty much the same sentiments in a conversation I had this morning. One of the engineers here at work has a '69 427 Corvette and has been a die-hard GM supporter his whole life. Like most of us, he swore he would never drive a Ford. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif He just ordered a new Mustang. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif GM needs to open the window and take a look at the world outside. |
Re: Deja vue....1965
I wonder how many Z/28's, and 427 camaros would sell if they brought back the 69 body style with improved handling and suspension. Throw in a new super tuned 302 fuel injected 500 horse or 427 LS-7 motors which would in fact be cheaper to buy than an actual 69's and I would bet my house they could not make these fast enough...You do not need to be a marketing genius to figure that out. Imagine Pontiac coming out with a copy of the 69 trans-am rag top? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

Great examples here, Check out GM's homepage, see anything that grabs you?

Re: Deja vue....1965
I was just at MIS this past weekend.Chevrolet had the GM version of the PTCruiser on hand, the HHR.Not a bad looking vehicle, but as we've seen,a few years late to the party.Bring it out after the market is already soaked with that style vehicle.Thats smart. Why are our[GM]profits going down when we spend so much $$$ on new car development? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif Cars that nobody wants. Its not rocket science is it?

He had been GM-head his entire life owning only a 2003 50th Ann Vette and 1996 Impala SS with 200 miles other then his Ponchos... He just took delivery of a 2005 Mustang GT. Nice car I might ad! |

I am sometimes embarrassed to be sitting in the same room as my other brand car buddies when a Chevrolet commercial comes on. Chevrolet really need to start paying attention. |
Re: Deja vue....1965
Here is some food for thought, or fat to chew on, depending on your point of view. Thomas Friedman is a Pulitzer prize winning writer, so he's no dummy. This column from last week really stirred up a hornet's nest.

Re: Deja vue....1965
Is that guy standing in a poppy field?
|
Re: Deja vue....1965
Friedman doesn't know what he is talking about, and the Set America Free coalition does not know how to design a car, while they feel free to tell others how it should be done. What a waste of paper.

I totally agree. GM just doesn't get it. Killing the new Camaro will send me to Ford for the new Mustang Cobra.

"I wonder how many Z/28's, and 427 camaros would sell if they brought back the 69 body style with improved handling and suspension."...............So if they came out with something like that how many would buy one ?

Re: Deja vue....1965
I don't want to offend anyone right now... So please hear me out. I think what Ford did with the Mustang was reinvent the feeling of being American. With the war going on, the Mustang revealing is during a prefect time. The energy and "retro" style of the car bring back memories of the 1960s and 1970s. I am not saying it Ford's only motivation, that would be absurd, but I think it is quite feasible that Ford put the "peddle to the metal" to get the car done based on current conditions we're in. What do you guys think?
|
Re: Deja vue....1965
It is ironic that the chief design engineer Ford is giving credit to is a young lad that came here from Vietnam during the evacuation and did well for himself. Ford may have sat down and looked at the demand for Mustang in 65 and thought maybe they can light that fire again, which it appears they have. But the almighty dollar is behind the drive for any large corporation. Don't forget Dodge, they are really playing up the Hemi for all it's worth and it is working to some extent. Yes, the GM exec's have always been a day late and they never seem to learn from their mistakes. Maybe it's time for GM to change those large CEO $$$$ packages into "stock performance" incentives, and get some fresh young blood there that listens to their customers. Get that Camaro plant cooking again.

That's out of my price range! |

Re: Deja vue....1965
They already have me (always a GM guy) thinking of the 2006 Mustang GT 500. I can't belive nobody has mentioned this new Super Car. They are already claiming 450 to 500 HP. That should rip your head back! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif
