427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
History: The car was built at Van Nuys during the third week of March, 1967. It was sold new at Alan Gwynn Chevrolet, 1400 S. Brand in Glendale, California on May 12, 1967 to a Mr. Thomas R. Craig of 131 N. Isabel, Glendale. Mr. Craig drove the car daily around Southern California until 1986. From what I have been able to determine I am the fourth owner. The car’s original black CA license plate number was VDA 033. The black plates I have now, UYJ 760, are 1967-issue with 1967, ‘68, and ’69 stickers.
Changes from stock: The car originally had 707Z Yellow Custom Bucket seat interior. I bought the car with the yellow seats, side, and door panels still in place but the carpet, headliner, and dash had been changed from the original gold (yes, gold) to black. Because the stock yellow and gold interior was both hideous-looking and not available from the aftermarket, I completed the conversion to a correct-appearing 765-style Black Custom Bucket interior. It looks much better now! The black vinyl top was replaced by a previous owner. The car has a very old dual-turbo exhaust with stock-located tailpipes. I’d bet the exhaust was put on the car at least 30-35 years ago. The factory California emissions equipment was removed long ago and the pipe plugs in the exhaust manifolds will probably never come out. The paint looks mostly original but the car had the right-front fender replaced in the 1960s and there is evidence of paint touch-up. The car is otherwise unrestored, door dings and all. Trim Tag: 03C: Third week of March 67-12637: 1967 Sport Coupe with Custom Interior 707Z: Yellow Custom Bucket Seats Y-2: Butternut Yellow lower body, black vinyl top 1E: Tinted Glass, all windows 2MG: Th-400 transmission, Center Console 3SL: Z23 Interior Décor Package, Z22 Rally Sport Package 4N: Super Sport 396/325hp 5Y: Deluxe Seat Belts Other Details: The engine is the original MZ-coded block, which denotes California L35/M40 automatic with Air Injection Reactor (smog) and PCV. The 12-bolt rear is coded BJ, which has been confirmed by the Camaro Research Group as being the original 3:07 non-Positraction installation and the BJ code shows on the PoP imprint on page 46 of the original Owner Protection Plan booklet. The car has the factory round traction bar. The car also has the optional B93 Door Edge Guards, J65 Metallic Drum Brakes (power-assisted), N33 Comfortilt Steering Column, U17 tach and gauges. I added the N96 optional mag-style wheel covers and a set of FC 14x6 wheels. I powder-coated the wheels black. The tires are Coker F70x14. Future Plans: I go back and forth on whether to go to a “Day 2” look that wouldn’t alter the car in such a way that it couldn’t be put back to stock. In reality, I’ll probably leave it as-is. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...TJ/RtSide1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...TJ/RtRear1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...RtFrontLow.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1.../HighFront.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...owlTagcrop.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...396L35crop.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...teriorHigh.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ad-onFlash.jpg |

Bill,
Cool car! 1967 Camaros are so https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif. I'm kinda partial to this model, as you can well imagine! I think you ought to put front AND rear spoilers on your Camaro! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gifJust kidding! Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif Great looking 67 Camaro SS/RS 396 (L35)!! Maybe I will get the chance to see it one day. I too would leave it the way it is, but this is coming from a guy who likes his cars 100% original. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Love everything about this car. Very very cool. Can't beat Butternut Yellow on a 67 w/RS option! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

Leave it alone, looks great as is.
Great looking car. |
Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
Leave it alone, unless you really love the yellow interior. The mag covers make the car...looks beautiful.

Cool car in a great color combo. The N96 caps look sharp on there. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
You guys are the greatest and thanks for all the compliments. (Budnate---I laughed when I saw that spoiler pic.) Again, the car looks great in the pics but in person it shows almost all of its 38 years. Someone mentioned Cragars and traction bars---believe me, it's difficult not to 'play' with this car. I have a set of original '60s American Torque Thrusts (14x6) that I had professionally restored and I'm toying with the idea of swapping the Coker redlines on for an easy Day 2 look. If you look at Kevin Suydam's orange '68 Dana you'll see the same wheels and redlines. I love that look. Rest assured guys, the more I read "leave it alone" the more I am convinced to do just that. Thanks again everybody!
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif x 100 By the way Bruce (Xplantdad), any good news??? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |
Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
Bill,
I've seen your car in person, you don't do her justice - she looks great for her age! Let me put it this way, I would ask her out in a second, if she wasn't already taken!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif -Sam |

Hey Sam, we need to "wow" these guys with a picture of our '67s parked together. SS/RS's, N96's, F70 redlines, and the color contrasts would make for a killer photo. Yeah, my girl's been well-used in her 38 years but she still looks pretty damn good. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
It's a real treasure as is....new black interior and all. You cannot beat the patina of a real original. Don't mess with it.

Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
Since it's an original California car (SoCal) and I am from the SF bay area I had to have these Doug Dicker frames I found on eBay. "Does the little lady need a new car? Then bring her in and we'll Dicker!" San Rafael is in Marin County just north of San Francisco.

Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
I really like this car Bill! I do not know why the photo I posted shows to be a BMW M1 when I thought I wanted a Build Sheet photo? Nonetheless, awesome Camaro.

Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
Go find the buildsheet photo and post it Dan!
BTW, original (restored) 15x6 peaked-spoke Torq Thrusts with belted pinstripe whitewalls are coming. Just a little Day 2 update. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |
Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
Wow Bill...it's been 4 years since your feature and you asked if I heard "anything" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif...where does the time go to?

HA! I was re-reading the thread and I saw that comment too. Time is flying all right.

Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
Love the Butternut Yellow, not sure why collectors shy away from it. If every car was red, balck or white what fun would that be? Great car!!
|
Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
Thanks! Yeah, BY is a real "sixties" color.

Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
Goofing around with new photo software and made this photo look like an old LIFE Magazine ad by altering the coloring and lighting.

Nice work with the photo, but those preform stacking pavers in the background take away too much. by the way, that car is awesome |
Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
HA! I guess I need to learn how to p-shop in some old bricks! That, plus a cute college girl with a short skirt, go-go boots and a Marlo Thomas flip hairdo!

Re: 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....
Nice shot Bill! Still one of my favorite '67's
