White Hurst 4 speed shift knobs-what had em?

Sort of an off-the-wall question, but I've been collecting white Hurst 4 speed shift knobs since I was was a kid, finding them at swap meets, flea markets etc, but nothing I have ever owned was supposed to have one on it. I thought they came on Yenko Deuces, but have since heard that they used black 1-piece Hurst knobs, not white. (bummer!) I know these were a popular "day 2" addition to many 4 speed cars, but am curious as to what cars came from the factory with a WHITE Hurst 4 speed knob? Chevelles, GTOs, Mustangs? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: White Hurst 4 speed shift knobs-what had em?

Why that is a 1964 or 65 GTO. Both used white knobs. 1966 up used black.

Thats the problem, they were such a popular and inexpensive day 2 item that it seems you find them in just about everything, and they look like they've been there for 35 yeats... but that still doesn't mean they were original, just changed out early on... I do knwo there were alot of cars that came witht hem from the factory though, probably GM, Ford and Mopar, maybe even AMC... just wondering if anyone knew of any in particular.

We forget that those shift knobs were quite a prize for those teenagers that haunted the showrooms and made off with one when the salesmen were not watching. Often the White ones were used to replace the missing ones and we might never know for sure just what came on a car.

My cousin was Parts Mgr at Bill White here in Tulsa and he kept a dozen in stock at all times cause they disapeared so easy.

I spoke with Pete Serio of Precision Pontiac regarding this topic and he is quite a Hurst expert. He told me the OEM's stopped using the white ball with the pattern around 65. After 65 the black ball with pattern was used on non- console cars. He also said that cars like Camaros with a console got the Chrome ball since the pattern was on the console He also said that it was a federal requirement that the manufacturers have a pattern on the ball or on the console so that you knew the pattern. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Schoneye, we need a good pic of an original deuce shifter ball. I still have my original black one, but the shift pattern is worn off. Anyone know where I can a nice replacement so I take off my incorrect white one?

yea, I have it stashed somewhere - I should keep it in the glove box! I would much prefer to have the correct black ball, but can't use my original since it's bald and looks weird. (hmm... original, bald & weird, who might that be https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif )

The deuces didn't get the two piece version, it was all black.

Here is a pic of mine, it's basically identical to the white Hurst one, only black with white engraved pattern. Photo courtesy of GarnetM20.

That looks good! Where'd ya get it, or did Neal install it?

camarojoe 03-10-2005 07:22 PM

Re: White Hurst 4 speed shift knobs-what had em?

No, Neal had a white one on it... I added that one to my collection and found this black one on ebay about 2 weeks after i got the car. Its a one piece knob, unlike the engraved black 2 piece ones used on the Camaro hurst and Muncie shifters. -JB

Re: White Hurst 4 speed shift knobs-what had em?

I didnt buy it NOS, and of course there is no part # on the ball itself. I believe it is 3/8-16 thread, with a brass insert and locknut. Same diameter as a white Hurst ball, i think slightly larger than a black 2-piece, at least it LOOKS slightly bigger to me. -JB

Re: White Hurst 4 speed shift knobs-what had em?

Looks the same to me, although i don't have my original one in front of me to scrutinize...maybe the Deuce guys can get a group purchase on them, i don't think any of the other Deuces had a black one-piece ball at SCR. Heck, I might even buy a spare for myself! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: White Hurst 4 speed shift knobs-what had em?

437 is also a two piece knob/lock ring like the one you posted.

As per my GM Canada 67-69 Camaro catalogue:

4.006 Knob, Transmission Control Lever (Synchromesh)
------------------------------
3921147 1967/ALL ST 4 SPD /SUP 3895201
3921147 1968/ALL ST 4 SPD - EXC CONSOLE
3961437@ 1969/ALL ST 4 SPD - EXC CONSOLE (@ = new parts master cat.)

If I remember correctly the difference from the 67-68 to 69 was 5/16" vs 3/8" threads, respectively. Both were black knobs with white printed shift pattern (top 2/3) and metal locking ring (bottom 1/3).

camarojoe 03-10-2005 09:25 PM

Re: White Hurst 4 speed shift knobs-what had em?

That 437 part #. would NOT be correct for a Deuce then, as it is not the same as the average camaro 4 speed knob with the 2 piece design, I have an NOS one of those, and the lower 1/4 of the ball itself is chrome. (2 piece knob) The one a Deuce used was more like the white hurst knobs that just used a hurst style lock nut under a recessed hole in the bottom of the round knob.

Re: White Hurst 4 speed shift knobs-what had em?

Don't know if it helps or not but the GTO restoration catalogs list the black one piece knob with the pattern on them. It was the standard knob on my 68 GTO.

Re: White Hurst 4 speed shift knobs-what had em?

That's correct JAG, especially since the deuce shifter arm is a GTO bench seat arm. Got a link to a good GTO resto catalog?

Marlin, Jegs and Summit have these knobs... I picked up a white one for a friend of mine a couple of years ago. They're in the $25. to $30. range I think. Greg

These guys are some of the best Pontiac vendors around. Very honest in their description of whether a part is correct or not. If it is not right they even list the problems in their catalog.

Guys I think that is the same knob as '67 Camaro??..Mine was gone also and I bought a repop one piece..I have to say it looks pretty good..It has been a few years but I think it came from classic..it did take two try's to get a good one the first had a nick in it...

Interesting that they have two sizes of black knobs.
