I'd kill for a 24x36 wall poster of this shot. I first saw it in a Car Craft special 25 years ago and it still gives me chills! The Number One Dana Camaro, built for Ole Bardahl, the oil products manufacturer. Started life as a 350 car. One magazine's testers did so many burnouts that they blew up the rear end. By the time Motor Trend got ahold of the car it had a 3:08 open diff and the M/T guys couldn't get it to hook (duh) at the track. It had Cragar G/T mags, which were like S/S's but were cast in aluminum with black spokes.

Bill, do you know if that car was Red by chance? Btw, I think the Cragar G/T was the predecessor to the Cragar S/X wheel. Both had the "Torque Thrust D" look. I got a set of 5 of the S/X wheels.. One was a speed shop display unit and never mounted on anything or with a tire.. Never seen another one since. (other than 1 or 2 old Cragar ads from the early 70s in a magazine)... But I have stopped my search for them after locating the 5th one. Bought a set of 4 a few years ago on Ebay and one was bent on the outer flange.

Pretty sure the #1 Dana Camaro was Ermine White. Here's a right-front shot of the same car. Note that the 427 emblems on the fenders are the type used on the '67 SS 427 Impalas.

Up until last year I was still racing the car with the original block/heads but I was catching so much grief from some of the "purists" that I decided to end its racing career......... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif

Welcome Rich.
I wouldn't mind hearing & seeing more of your L78 Camaro.
Can you give us more info like options,(is it a 4 speed?) & trim tag info?
With only 600 made, these cars are very unique. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

I figured someone would ask so I took some pics yesterday. The car is kinda buried in some snow but I managed to get the hood up and snap a few. I will post them tonight.....

Re: Newbie here........

I bought the car in 1985 when I was 19. I paid 4200 bucks for it and my parents thought I was nuts. 1985 was long before everyone was concerned with matching numbers and trim tags and originality. I bought the car because it was damn fast and there wasn't much around at the time that could touch it. I won't lie to anyone. I ran the sh&t out of this thing and it still begs for more. It is a pure beast from a factory stand point. I still have some things to change on the car. The hood, ,ignition system, fuel system, and relocate the battery back to the factory spot. The car has current registration and insurance so i can drive it anytime. Now, if I could only get it off the porch........
The car is a 4 speed without a console. I also have the original gearbox for it, but I blew it up years ago. It still has the original "COO" 12 bolt with a new set of Richmond 4.10's. I also kept the GM 4.10 gear set and it has the correct 2/70 stamp on the ring gear. The interior is very plain and all business. No gauges, no power steering. Somewhere along the line before I had the car a 130 speedo was installed. I have had the correct 150 unit for a while now, but never got around to switching it because I was racing the car so much and it didn't matter.

Rich, great story about a great car! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

I have only had my L78 for about a year and a half, I have the motor out now for an overhaul. It sure is a lot of fun to drive!

I'll bet a dozen or more of these 600 cars are owned by members of this site.

Re: Newbie here........

Nice ride Sam....love the split bumper cars. I don't know how many self-proclaimed Camaro gurus have told me over the years that I should swap out the full length front bumper for the short ones and make it a rally sport. I know what you mean about driving the car around town. I love the look on peoples faces when I stop at a light. Most people have no idea what it is. They just look around and wonder. Enjoy your car when you get it done. My car still "wows" me every time I crack the throttle... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Hey Bob, you keep asking the questions and I'll research the answers, it's a good way to keep learning new stuff about my car... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif

VF3 included thin black plastic cushions front and rear, and rear bumper guards. The Illustrated Camaro Recognition Guide Volume 2: 1970 to 1973 (John R. Hooper) shows VF3 on both standard and RS Camaros in the Exterior Section (Chapter 14 in my copy). Check out pages 156 and 158. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

Where were the cushions on the face of the bumpers ?

Seattle Sam 02-07-2005 06:11 AM

Re: Newbie here........

The cushion ran the length of the bumper (or bumperette) parallel to the ground along the rounded leading edge of the bumper farthest away from the sheet metal.

As you can easily see when looking at THIS car...

Wasn't the "Sunshine Special" the only '70 to have a chin spoiler?? I can't remember if they were factory built or if they were done by Hurst.. Anyone remember? I don't feel like looking it up right now. If I remember there were only like 3 built. Was that spoiler a COPO option on the 70??? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
