Yenko Deuce wheel question
Since the Deuces were shipped from GM with XT steel wheels and later had the SS wheels installed at Yenko (or Hurst) and were not actually purchased through GM, did Yenko use the stainless steel capped lugnuts like the SS Chevelles,Novas, and Camaros had from the factory, or did they simply buy chrome acorn style nuts to mount the wheels? Just curious, as my car had the stainless capped ones on it when I bought it and I got to thinking that maybe they aren't correct on a Deuce. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Schonye? Marlin? Tom K?

Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
The ones you have are correct. Be careful with the impact wrench. S.

Thanks Ken... I'll keep that in mind! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
In my experience, the majority of original cars found have small chrome acorn lugnuts, not the stainless capped ones commonly used. I have all of my original lugnuts, and have seen the ones on other 'Yenko' converted cars, and they are chrome. I have not been able to find correct replacements, so I used the stainless version temporarily. If I can't find the correct ones, I'll get my originals rechromed.
It is possible that the 'Hurst' converted cars received a different lugnut. What do you have on the yellow deuce Schoneye? |
Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
I just went out and checked again. I do have the small chrome acorn nuts. I have the cragers on it now, and have two bags of nuts in the drawer. When I checked last night I grabbed the wrong one. The others came with the Peck deuce. They are the stainless capped ones. Sometimes it's hard to keep your nuts straight, or anything connected with them. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif S.

Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
So you're saying your Yellow car originally DID come with chrome nuts, not the stainless capped ones?

Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
Schoneye's just plain nutz!

Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
Yes Joe, that's right. Sometimes I get the two deuces mixed up. 3 of the 4 rims that came with the Peck deuce are the originals. And the Yellow deuce did come with Goodyear white striped E70s. Hey, give an old man a break. If I remember to zip up it's a good day. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif S.

Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
When Don Yenko installed the Magnum 500 14X7 wheel on the 1970 Deuces, did he use the Bolt on Center cap #3956770,or the later design spring clip cap #3983323?
|
Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
They were bolt ons.
|
Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
bolt on's. Two little bolts from a small envelope that was tucked into one of the caps.

[/ QUOTE ] Actually, neither of those are correct. the part number Yenko ordered was 35859, it was not a GM part number, but rather a MotorWheel part number, as the caps were purchased direct from them rather than through GM. Yenko bought these in complete sets of 4 in a box. He then added his own "Y" center decals over the Magnum 500 logos. Some cars didn't get the Y's originally, and were sold new with caps as shown below. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/103...num500caps.jpg |
Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
Yep, and he bought those little boxes by the case https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
|
Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
I think it was mentioned in another post awhile back, but its also interesting to note that they didn't bother to remove the Magnum 500 logos, and the thin foil "Y" decals allowed the raised Magnum 500 logo underneath to show through.

Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
Yep, just one of those little details that you look for on the restored cars https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif Unless of course you happen to have a car that didn't get the 'Y's, and they were just thrown on the front seat in disgust after you beat up on Don to take off those plain XT's https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif

Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
Did Motorwheel make those bullet caps with a Spring clip also,or was that GM that revised the design from the earlier Bolt on?

The 70 Camaro Z-28 15" (and possibly the Camaro/Nova 14" Rally) Wheel used a Stainless Jacketed Steel Lugnut. The 2nd Design sold by Chevrolet with same part # is a different shape than the 1970+ 1st design......just adding this reply for those that might possibly be interested...
1970 Originals had TALLER Crown....see pic !!! |
Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
The taller crown version is what came on the deuces, except in chrome. As you can see in Chuck's pic, the two nuts are very different. Is that tall crown nut in the pic chrome by chance? If it is, then that's probably what we need. We were believing that Yenko used aftermarket lugs of the day, which is why we could not find them!
|
Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
Both of the nuts pictured are stainless steel capped. I would bet Yenko bought chrome ones from the tire shop across the street, and wasn't buying them through GM.
|
Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
While I can't say I've ever seen a Motorwheel cap with spring clips, I would guess that Motorwheel was actually manufacturing the caps for GM, as they also made the SS wheels, so Motorwheel probably revised the "standard" magnum 500 Bullet caps at the same time the ones they were making for GM were revised. Honestly, thats just a guess though.

Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
I know one thing bad about those lug nuts with the shell on them. If you use a impact to remove them they will split and then you have a smaller metric size nut to have to get off.
I have thrown a bunch of them that were damaged away that split on me. |
Re: Yenko Deuce wheel question
That's what I was afraid on the nuts Joe, but was hoping that the high crown one was a chromie - bummer! I'm back to thinkin that Don got aftermarket lugs locally.

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good! I have a picture of an original owner Yenko Deuce where he replaced one of the 20 lugnuts with the stainless steel capped version. I had a pic of it, showing the correct chrome original on the left, and the capped version on the right.
