Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
Stinger on Ebay
Anyone ever see or hear of this car? Tom, any idea if its verifed as real? If it is, it would be a neat piece to restore. Someone get this one and have it ready for SCR8! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |

I would be cautious, unless ed has something on this car. Does not have rear spoiler. Stripes are incorrect from other yenko vegas. See pic of real stripe. Roger

Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
I don't see any Yenko crest embelms on it like shown in Yenko Vega original pictures
|
Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
Yeah, I thought the same thing when I saw it... "be cautious"... the decal is wrong, no Yenko crests anywhere... and I didn't think the turbo was actually installed by Don on any of these cars, but was rather an over-the-counter add-on for legal/emmissions reasons... I wish he'd post pics of the engine, we could tell if it's even the correct Switzer turbo....

Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
Just got this from the seller...
Dear chevy454, You asked: "Do you have any documentation from Yenko Chevrolet, or anywhere else, stating it's Yenko heritage? Thanks, Rob Clary yenko.net" Sorry but no !973 is a very hard year to find any information on with Yenko vegas. We also requested a picture of the engine, but no dice... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |
Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
I just got a email from seller and he said pictures of the engine would be posted this evening on the ebay auction.

hmmm..looks like its been there for some time.....

Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
is it the correct Switzer turbo charger that yenko sold ?
|
Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
They probably didn't reproduce stripes when it was repainted. It's worth something, even if it isn't real - it would cost something to find a solid car and turbo just to build a clone. A person would have to take time and research the previous owners and document the car themselves.
|
Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
Hmmm, what are the odds of finding a turbo on a Vega?
Probably about the same as being struck by lightning while being attacked by a shark. Someone with NCIB access should run the VIN and see what's up. 1V77B3U266544 |
Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
Don't care if it's a Yenko or not...it's cool either way...I like the way those Vegas look.

Stinger on Ebay Anyone ever see or hear of this car? Tom, any idea if its verifed as real? If it is, it would be a neat piece to restore. Someone get this one and have it ready for SCR8! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif [/ QUOTE ] As per the car itself, I do not have anything, so without paperwork, the NICB would be the only way to identify the selling dealer. In regards to the turbo unit, I have 3 folders of Yenko Vega stuff, including Schwitzer blueprints, drawings with part numbers and some pictures of Yenko cars with a turbo installed. Judging by what I can see in the pictures posted by the seller, this does not appear to be a Yenko installed turbo unit nor a Yenko kit. Without going into a lot of boring detail, from late '71 on, Yenko tubos/kits were plumbed in a different way, more in line with what Chevrolet was experimenting with at the time. Judging by what is contained in some of the correspondence between Yenko and Schwitzer, I am not for sure if Yenko actually ever offered the turbo/kit for sale. In the past 8 years, I have only seen one documented unit. This is the second such type of Vega turbo unit I have seen for sale on Ebay in the last 6 months. The other one, which was just a turbo and kit, was plumbed in the same manner as this one. From the mid '70s to the early '80, Vega turbo kits were very popular, available from several different sources. Hot Rod magazine did an article or two on such units. |
Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
I saw some magazine ads for the Yenko turbo Vega and they said it was a Rajay turbo. It looked like the turbo mounting was similar to the one on Ebay, but it appeared to be mounted more forward in the car. The ads I found on the internet and you can't see the detail well enough.
|
Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
In early '71, Yenko was experimenting with Rajay on a prototype or two. But in mid to late '71 Yenko switched to Schwitzer. I am guessing because of the problems he was having with the EPA and emissions.
|
Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
The ads were from 1971 and they were different ads that look like they are from Car Craft and Hot Rod and they both show the Rajay turbo. So he didn't end up using the Rajay turbo at all?
|
Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
I cannot say for sure he did not use the Rajay, but from what I have read, the Rajay was only used on a prototype or two. Everything I have points to Schwitzer as being the provider for the Yenko turbo kits. But, as I said, not for sure how many, if any, were sold to the public. In one memo to Schwitzer, Don mentions that the EPA may not allow him to sell the units, period. In addition, Don was having supply/shipping problems with Schwitzer. The folders are interesting reading, including a memo or two from Don concerning the 50,000 mile EPA durability test.

Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
Motion performance also sold mail order turbo kits for vega's. Could have been installed by car owner when new, and when painted someone slapped on the decals for selling appeal. The price is almost good enough to be even if it is not a yenko. Roger
|
Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
Does anybody have any ads or pictures of the Motion turbo Vega kit? That would be interesting to see.
|
Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
I believe the Rajay turbo unit was just on the prototype. The Rajay unit was more expensive and more difficult to get through EPA because it used an aftermarket intake manifold. The Schwitzer used the stock Vega intake.

Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
CTChevelle...congrats on the purchase. Please post some more pics when you take delivery of the car, and let us know what your research uncovers.

Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
Thank you very much! It is a very neat looking car that has many questions that hopefully I can find answers to. I figured I would take a chance. It will be alot of fun driving it and doing the research. If anybody has any info. please send it my way. I will definetly keep everybody updated.

Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
The first thing I would do is find someone in law enforcement or at an insurance agency who has access to the NICB and do a search on your VIN and see if the MSO shows Yenko Chevrolet. Without any existing paperwork still with the car, that would be your best bet at finding out if it's a "Yenko" Vega or not. Outside of that I'd start tracking down previous owners and see what they might have to say. Best of luck in your search.

Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
Steve, got any law enforcement connections https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
The COPO code for the 1972 Vega Special Engine was 9C2AA with a retail price of $77. There were 160 built in 1972.

Re: Yenko Stinger Vega on eBay
The October 1971 HOT ROD has a writeup titled The NEW Equalizers. On pg 131 theres a good engine pic showing the 2GC Rochester that was pressurized thru the stock air filter.I installed 2 of Yenko's turbo kits, one on a 72 hatchback and another on my 73Vega Panel Express.
