octane boost
Bought a 440 6-pk RR with a fresh engine rebuild.Has 10.5:1 compression with stock carbs and cam. Do you think octane booster is necessary to supplement premium pump gas? Seems to run OK for now.

Re: octane boost
Sure it is. It allows you to increase timing a little and to have some type of lead additive to help keep things cooler. I use the stuff from Jack Podell. Can give you 103 octane if you want it to. Sam https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: octane boost
Did you happen to cc the heads/pistons, etc? You can actually over do it with octane...it's better to have too much as not enough, but too much octane and not enough squeeze can hurt performance, as it did with one of our L-72s. I used all factory stock pieces, cc'ed everything, and it came in at 10.2:1 on an 11:1 advertised rating. I had to be careful of the amount of race fuel I mixed with the premium, or the results would show up in the time slips. It's more noticable in cooler air, but it's still there in the warm air as well.

Rob
What ratio did you find works best for your application? I am going through this right now with Podells product. |
Re: octane boost
Were to get this stuff in our area Rick?

Re: octane boost
Vettefest is the Most popular around here,
Also D&R Camaro,Tamraz,PartsPlace,Ground Up,Yearone,OPG,Ricks,Paddock,Ausleys,etc. It's a lead Additive & Octane Boost in one. Around $20.00 a gallon. |

Re: octane boost
With the 10.2:1 I think I was mixing it 3:1 or thereabouts...with our current 12.2:1 it gets straight race fuel. We could probably mix it a tad now, though, as we only have 34 degrees total timing in it, but I'm erring on the safe side.
We usually have a drum of purple around, though, so I'd use that versus the actual additive out of a can...the stuff in the can turned the plugs colors, making them tough to read. |
Re: octane boost
You are running pretty fast on those street tires Rob! Most of those cars didn't run that much better with headers and slicks and traction bars, in my day! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: octane boost
Thanks Sam! Just doing my best!! The scary part is that I think there's actually a couple tenths or so still left in the car, but I think dad is probably getting tired of me messing with his car!
Hopefully some time this summer I'll start my learning curve all over when I start on my Chevelle...https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif |
Re: octane boost
Coil spring cars react different. Car may be a little heavier, but may hook better. Air bags!! We ran 50/50 cure rides in the back and 90/10's in the front of Joe Possella's 1970 LS-6, with a 4:88 went 11:47et. 9" slicks and headers. 4 speed. This was a bench seat and stripes delete car. Dark blue. Wish I knew where that went!! Like Archie Bunker says...Those were the daysss!https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif

Re: octane boost
It's gonna be a '69 Y-Chevelle, 4-speed, bench, no ps, and I'm betting it's not gonna be a *lot* heavier than our Camaro, which tips the scales any where from 3750-3850+ with me in the seat.
|
Re: octane boost
That is close in weight. I thought the chevelle would have at least 200lbs. on the camaro. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Good luck with the 4 speed.
|
Re: octane boost
Sam: there very well may be a 200+ pound difference, as I honestly won't know until I roll the car on the scales. But, from what I've seen of comparably equipped '69 Chevelles, and the portly weight of our Camaro, I just think it's gonna be under 200. I've always felt our Camaro was heavy, even for what it is (auto, ps)...maybe because it's all original metal? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: octane boost
I think the A/S cars are around 3400??? Small block cars around 3200??? You put that yellow car on a small diet you may see 12 teens.
|
Re: octane boost
With me in the seat, and around a 1/4 tank of fuel, our Camaro goes 3740 pounds. I don't even want to wrap my mind around what would happen if I dropped 350 pounds...heck, that's COPO Pete territory! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif

Re: octane boost
Thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth.....I would go with a mix of good fuel and pump gas instead of the octane boost. I have had a couple of bad experiences with the octane boost. Two different brands and had the same problems with both.....chemical build up on carb parts....spray on carb cleaner wouldn't even touch this stuff. This would happen over the winter months when not running engine much. Switched to good fuel and started mixing it like Rob mentioned and had much better results.

Re: octane boost
Never had any trouble with Jack Podell's stuff. I drive my car in the winter though. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
