Of the 201 made,75 are accounted for Today according to MM.This does not mean they are all in Driving condition.
Dan Blockers Butt touched one of them....
Z16's were available in these colors:
Regal Red
Crocus Yellow
Tuxedo Black
Cost was around $4,200.00 in 1965.
The one lone Company Fleet Convertible was Sierra Tan.
As of now,the convert.is believed to have been Destroyed.

Re: Z 16 Chevelle...How many exsist today?

There are about 65 known cars today according to the "keeper of the vins" in PA. I believe he has info on all of these cars and is very discrete and does not give out owner info. He is doing a great service to those of us with real Z16's - clones aren't a problem for me - fakes are.

If you really know Z16's, you know they are hard to fake because of some very unique items. I have been told recently by a parts maker that Z front spindles may be in the works - a part unique to the Z. If this happens, watch out for "built" cars. The Jim M. project should expose any fakes that do get built - I hope.

Re: Z 16 Chevelle...How many exsist today?

Several musclecar and Chevelle books often picture a very nice red one that is (or used to be) located in Iowa. Usually displays the old 1965 Iowa license plate showing Dallas County (probably in the Waukee, IA area). I live near this area yet I've never seen the car but am curious if anyone is familar with this car. Still the same owner of year's ago or has it since been sold?

Don't forget that the '65 L-78 (396-425hp) was also installed in full size Chevrolets in '65. I recall seeing a production total once that was around (I believe) 2500.
My best friend in high school had one.
Verne.

My thoughts too. Although the same engine in the Corvette and the full size cars got solids. Why?

They weren't,but Vince Piggins was,as well as "Bunkie" Knudsen.
Two were built at Baltimore, while the others were built at KC Leeds Plant I believe.

Hyrdauic lifter engine was 375HP,and more socially acceptable for the New Chevelle. The solid was 425HP,& the Corvette always got the highest HP first....But not in 1970 Baby!

Re: Z 16 Chevelle...How many exsist today?

I thought it was one prototype built in Baltimore then 200 built in KS.
I have heard rumor of a Z16 convertiable but never saw any evidence. I would think a picture of it would have been found if it was an internal GM car but who knows.
A Z-16 Chevelle was one of the quickest stock engine cars ever made. It ran in the 8s with stock engine. It also had some type of liquid fuel turbine engine in the rear. I have an article on it somewhere. I think it was built by a co. called Turbotronics

Mrrec. Who is doing the repop on the front spindles? Werent this spindles a little taller than the regular spindles?

Re: Z 16 Chevelle...How many exsist today?

I BELIEVE THE SPINDLES WERE A TAKEOFF FROM THE FULL SIZE CAR TO USE THE BIGGER BRAKES....MY Z-16 HAD A PROVISION MOLDED UNDER THE DASH FOR A FACTORY MANUAL CHOKE!

mrrec 11-07-2003 04:26 PM

Re: Z 16 Chevelle...How many exsist today?

The Z16 spindles are unique to the Z16 and are not full size parts. They are a different appearing forging. The brake backing plate is also unique and not a big car part. The brake drum, however is big car.

Z16 cam is hydraulic and is the only 375hp chev cam. It also specs different from the later L78 cam.

I don't want to say who the potential spindle maker is as he is just considering it at this point.

If you rebuild (or build) the axe with a new handle and a new bit, is it still an original axe or a reproduction?!

Re: Z 16 Chevelle...How many exsist today?

There is a red one sitting on the showroom floor at Kevin Whitaker Chevy in Greenville SC. He has several nice muscle cars in there. A local Chevelle parts dealer told me he saw the 1 convertible on an episode of I Dream of Jeannie.
