Rich,
Could you give me a month and year of the Car Craft issue the car was featured in? Thanks, Rick |
Re: Real 63 Z11
Is this car coming from a collection in Pennsylvania?
|
Re: Real 63 Z11
No, I don't think so. How would CarCraft know which Z11 out there is the best one? Just another statement that makes you go hmmmmm....

Re: Real 63 Z11
Rick, the Z11 is not one of Fezell's

richp;
My statement was not directed at you, this is a no-bashing site, but rather at CC! I only say that because some of the best of the best rarely see the light of day, as I'm sure you already know. Fezell's Old Reliable Z11 is a really neat car, as are his Alan Green Chev. Z11 and Enoch Chev Z11, I could look at them for hours. I have been watching a videotape with a few other Z11's drag racing at various tracks during the early to mid '60's. Does anyone know how many Z11's were produced and found? (Rusty Symmes' registry book?) Awesome cars, love watching vintage footage of Z11's going up against R-code Galaxies |
Re: Real 63 Z11
I had always heard that there were 57 produced. However, when I bought my red Z-11 about 12 years ago, I talked at length with Rusty. He said his research showed that the Tonawanda engine plant records showed only 50 Z-11 engines built. If they kept about 10% for service replacement, then maybe only about 45 cars. But they may not have kept any for replacement because this engine probably didn't carry a warranty. So, if Rusty is correct, and if the records he referred to are correct, then maybe only 50 cars.

Re: Real 63 Z11
Dick;
What was the required production in '63 for NHRA racing? Was it 50, or didn't it matter since some were run in FX? How many are found according to Rusty's book? Is it possible for a non Z11 owner to get a copy of his info book? |
Re: Real 63 Z11
Where can I get Rusty's book...whats the name of it etc.
|
Re: Real 63 Z11
I seen "Old Reliable" run in 63 at Quaker City Dragway (Salem, Ohio) they were match racing a Thunderbolt. Can't remember who won? Hard to believe it has been 40 years!!!!
|
Re: Real 63 Z11
Whoops! It was 1964 "Yea I know, they did not have Thunderbolts in 63" Getting senile in my old age!
|
Re: Real 63 Z11
That was a quick catch Tom I was mentally typing the T-bolt statistic while reading your correction - plenty of T-bolt action on these tapes I'm watching as well.
Cool stuff, most of it is from York US30, Pocono Drag Lodge, and some tracks down south. |
Re: Real 63 Z11
I looked at a Z11 down in Tenna. a couple of years ago. Red on red had all the correct parts but the vin tag and cowl did not jive so I left it alone. Did you ever see this one Rich P.

Re: Real 63 Z11
This car is stunning...I only wish.........someone is going to be very lucky to own this car...
|
Re: Real 63 Z11
Speaking of Thunderbolts, for anyone that ever wanted one in the collection I know of a perfect example that could be bought. Whoever buys the Z-11 should also go for the T-Bolt and head to the dragstrip to settle a 40 year old disagrement, once and for all... Anyone interested, contact me.

Re: Real 63 Z11
Yenko Deuce Registry: Sorry it's taken me so long to try and answer your questions. Just found Rusty's booklet. I think the required minimum production to qualify for NHRA's stock classes was 50. I know the accepted production numbers for factory-built Super Stock racers like the '63-'64'-'65 lightweight Mopars was around 50; '64 Galaxies - 50; I think the cars with lower production numbers like the '62 Z-11's, '63 Pontiac Tempests, Swiss-Cheese Catalinas, Lightweight Comets and Falcons had to run in the experimental classes (AFX -BFX).
Rusty lists 44 cars that he says were factory built and another 7 that may have been. Gives vin numbers for 18 cars and lists the city and most of the dealers that the 44 cars were shipped to . He lists one car that was made into a Z-11 after the February '63 GM racing ban using parts slipped out the "back door". He states that the Flint assembly plant received 50 "QM" engines from Tonawanda engine plant. Also that records show 20 partial engines were made and shipped possibly as late as July '63. Some of the original owners/drivers were: Dave Strickler, Don Nicholson, Frank Sanders, Hayden Profitt, Butch Leal, Malcom Durham, Hubert and Houston Platt, Ronnie Sox, Joie Chitwood, Shirley Shahan, and Dick Harrell. Fascinating reading. I think you have to get the booklet directly from Rusty. I have an old phone number. If you're interested e-mail me at |

Re: Real 63 Z11
NHRa required 50 cars to be built to run in Super Stock, example was the order of 50 '68 Novas and 50 ZL-1s by Fred Gibb. To qualify for Stock, 500 was needed. Thus, Don ordering, (later reduced) 500 1969 Yenko Camaros.
