68 427 Biscayne - L36 Air Cleaner ?
1 Attachment(s)
Me again.
I REALLY like this single snorkel. It's not the skinny snorkel, and has that *stealth* look to it. Question is: "Is it correct for '68 ?" I've got this one and the dual snorkel. I'd actually prefer to run this one because it's just "different". I keep getting conflicting info on whether this is (or could be) correct for a '68 ?? HELP ! |

Casey, I cannot answer you definitively but maybe this will help.

Re: 68 427 Biscayne - L36 Air Cleaner ?
I know - that's the problem......no definitive answers. I'd expect the dual snorkel on an L72, but things start getting fishy with the 385 horse. The L36 engine shot is an air car, so that adds another level of complexity. I don't know if they would've had multiple single snorkels for different option combos (air - for example). Also, was there a model year where they changed to drivers side vs. passengers side snorkel inlets that would place this as a '67 or '69 unit possibly ?? I know the air cleaner is all original - - so it came off of *some* 385 horse B-body.....just curious if it's good for 68 or not..... I'm sure they won't complain about a single snorkel air cleaner, as I'm sure there is no performance advantage, but I do want to do this thing as absolutely correct as possible.

Re: 68 427 Biscayne - L36 Air Cleaner ?
Casey,
did you purchase this engine complete? if you did, does the block still have the code on the stamp pad at the front of the engine? The build date of the engine should also be on this stamp pad. Also Marc with the white 67 might know the correct date of the air cleaner. Marc.... Billy |
Re: 68 427 Biscayne - L36 Air Cleaner ?
This looks like an air cleaner off a 1967 impala. If it was for a "super sport" it would have a chrome lid. I think these were 1967 only? They also had them with a special base for California AIR cars, these air cleaners were similar to the low horse SS Chevelle of the same year. If the horn is aprroximately 7 1/8 inches long it is a 67. 1966 high horse came with dual snorkel, 68 and 69 came with open element. A 1967 air cleaner is pretty rare and worth about 400.00 if in good condition.

I agree, it looks correct for L36 1967 Non- SS. Marc

Re: 68 427 Biscayne - L36 Air Cleaner ?
Actually, the air cleaner is sitting on top of a '69 396 that I'm just kinda using as a *mock-up* as I accumulate parts, etc.
So I've got a couple of pretty consistent votes that it would be for a non-SS (L36) '67. So - would that mean dual snorkel with chrome lid for 68 L36, or painted lid ? I think only the L72's got the open element ??? DAMN - I love learning all this stuff !!! |

These are *fun* problems ........... |
Re: 68 427 Biscayne - L36 Air Cleaner ?
Casey,
Does the air cleaner still have the sticker on the side of the base? If it is does, can you read the part number and 2 letter code? If you can read the number, I can look it up. If you can only read the code try a Jim Osbone catalog for the same coded sticker to find the application that way. Greg |

Casey, I just found an article on a 68 L36 Impala SS that has 45k original miles on it. The picture of the engine shows a single snorkel air cleaner, with the snorkel on the passenger side of the engine. I will email you a copy of the article as it is too big to post here. To make this air cleaner you can use a 69 Camaro cowl induction air cleaner base combined with the 70-72 Z28 lid (same as the 65 Z16, 66 L72 lids also) which both can be purchased from most Camaro parts suppliers. It will not be exact but should be close enough for what you are wanting it for....................RatPack............

Holy Crap .....
I had to run out to the shop in my socks, and there was snow on the ground ! <DOH> Anyway, the Service Instruction sticker is still intact on the air cleaner, and the number is 6421773. There is no other 2-letter designator on that sticker, and it is definitely complete. The rest of the base doesn't have any *witness* marks where another sticker would have been either. |
Almost forgot .....
Thanks again Rat Pack for forwarding that article to me. I sure do like this single big-inlet base I've got though.
I know - I can just say it was an early build car, and this was a left-over '67 air cleaner !! All the rest of the engine stuff that I'm accumulating is '67 date coded for '68 model year - - I've got an angle now !!!!!! Re: 68 427 Biscayne - L36 Air Cleaner ?
Casey;
Looks like I found a match to the part number, but not for 68. The 62-70 (dated 70) parts book show the following: 66 PASSENGER 427 <font color="red"> 6421773 </font color> Options K.I.F. which are K. Exc. Sp. H/Per., I. Exc. Level Ride., F. Exc. Closed Vent. 67 PASSENGER 427 <font color="red"> 6421773 </font color> Options L.J.D. which are L. w/Sp. H/Per., J. Exc. Level Ride, D. Exc. Closed Vent BTW Here are the part numbers for 68: PASSENGER 427 6424810 Options E.G. which are E. w/T.H., G. w/SS 427 PASSENGER 427 6424809 Options E.H. E. w/T.H., H. Exc. SS 427 PASSENGER 427 6483663 Options I.F.H. which are I. w/H/Per., F. Exc. T.H., H. Exc. SS 427 PASSENGER 427 6483664 Options G.F.J. which are G. w/SS 427, F. Exc. T.H., J. Exc. Sp. H/Per. PASSENGER 427 6423907 Option K. which is K. w/Sp. H/Per. I hope this helps, Greg |

Casey,
If you like the look, you can go with the good looking stock style and allow better breathing with some strategically placed slots, which would not be readily apparent to the casual observer. Or, you could go with the really cool, dealer installed fresh air induction system... (see attachment)- being from the dealer, it could be installed on any Biscayne or Impala, including yours! -Sam |
Re: 68 427 Biscayne - L36 Air Cleaner ?
Thanks Greg !!! Great info.
OK - I'm pretty confident that the 'ole single snorkel-big outlet air cleaner isn't correct for the 68 L36. Now ............ Is it a general concensus that is *should* be the single *skinny* snorkel ? If so, painted lid on an L36, or chrome ? God - I really don't like that puny snorkel ......... <blech> Can I get away with the dual snorkel at least, with a painted lid ? |

Casey;
Just for comparison the only carryover part number from 68 to 69 is 6423907 Pass 427 w/Sp. H/Per. Greg |
