Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
I have rec. a few emails and priv. messages about my car and it's current resto. I guess all the publicity recently.( It is not for sale, I really do like this car alot, although everthing does have a price)
It is in excellent hands awaiting final assembly in Latrobe. The original plan called for Brian to detail the engine and engine bay, and leave the rest of the car in it's "unrestored" state. Then when you get to his shop and see his work you want to just restore the whole thing! Here are some pic's( three different links) web page web page web page |
Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
It looks like another Jack Douglass Yenko has been found. Another Daytona Yellow m21,9561, 9737, endura, chambered and amfm with trim pkg. 649233. The one right before mine. Some real good documentation too, including vintage photos from 69/70. Stay tuned for some posts from Clint.

Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Chris or Clint, Does this car have the stripe treatment in the vintage photos? Is their a Yenko window sticker in the documents?
|
Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
I thought it was Douglass* Yenko.....
|
Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
After very close inspection of the photos, the car was not given the Yenko stripe treatment nor did I get any Yenko documentation with the car. The pictures were taken by the second owner in 1971. I do have the complete owner history which takes the car back to Chicago. I wish that I had more. I will have to take a photo of a photo with my digital camera. As soon as I do, I will post it.

Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Shor,
I just thought it was a neat aside that when Jack and I were finished looking at the L-78 ,M21, Curved Neck radiator, BV code rear, factory spoiler, no gauge or console, AM/FM Blue light ,Code 76 76 ,X66 trim all drivetrain numbers matching 1969 Camaro Coupe, that he was heading over to see Mr. Ed. formerly of Fencil Tufo. I started to show Jack an advertisement Under Hi-Performance car for sale section ,of the 1968 Chicago Tribune classifieds, which Chris Shrenka brought to the 2002 reunion and gave to me. The Douglass Chevy adv. is listed first, then Mr. Norms/Grand Spaulding Dodge and then Mr Ed's/Briganse Chevrolet. Jack had not seen one of the advs. in over 20 years but was able to recite his original Dealerships Phone Number from over 20 years ago. Chris S.he also mentioned a special thanks to you, for digging up the info and sharing it with all of us. I can't wait to see what Mr. Ed has to say? |
Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Stefano...L-78...Not L-72?

Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Rick,
Jack has been brokering cars for years and knows that I favor Big Block Camaros so he was trying to sell me this L78. I do not think that this car had anything to do with his dealership, still one cool Driver. |
Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Stefano, How old is Jack Douglas? It is interesting that he is still out "jiping" cars at his age. Will he ever visit this site to set the record straight? I am curious as to why he closed. A friend of mine that worked at Team Chevrolet (The dealer that is now in the place of Jack Douglas Chevy) told me that before they built Interstate 355 Jack Douglas was selling 300+ cars a month, and when they built I355 (right through their front yard!) it affected sales greatly. Afterwards they went to about 100 cars per month and that is what they still sell today. The general sales manager of the dealer that I work for used to work with a former general manager of Jack Douglas Chevy.

Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Frank,
He did set the record straight I did print out that long thread for him to read, just to make certain that I represented everything as he has relayed it to me over the years. The Team Chevy current location was not used until after the Super Car Era had ended. The Super Car Era location was what is Now Continental Motor Sports ,the Exotic car dealership. He has been involved with the brokering and auctioning of special interest vehicles since he was a dealer. His son John is the GM of a highline import store, in the Suburbs. Brass Era cars,Vintage Indy and Road Race cars are his favorites. He said that he will be at Pheasant Run, November first and Second. |
Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Sorry Stefano,I was cofused. That makes sense now.
Frank I-355 is many miles away due west of the Old Jack Douglass Chevy in Hinsdale, and Team Chevy in Westmont.I can't see it affecting their sales at all... I-294 is next to The Old Jack Douglass now, and Rt.83 is next to Team in Westmont today. Are one of these what you meant? |
Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Rick,
Douglass Moved to the current Team Chevy Location in the Mid 1970s(?) Team Chevy is the most recent Old Douglass Chevy Location and the express way did hurt sales just as Frank mentioned. Jack moved back to the First Douglass Location, in Hinsdale after he sold the Dealership and when it became Team Chevy to sell special interest cars, mostly Corvettes and Muscle cars. |
Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Good to know, but I-355 does not run right through Team Chevrolets front door.Rt.83 does and they recently blocked off the dealerships entrance to it for good.I thought that is what he meant.Sorry a lil bored today....

Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
If it matters, I-355 went through the Grand Mandarin Restaurant's front yard.

Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Guys sorry to turn this thread into a geography debate! You are right Rick I ment to say rte 83. I made a typo, afterall I was a Margarita under when I made that post!! Im sure you local Chi-Town guys have made a trip to Team and saw how hard it is to get in that joint. It's like a maze. That is how rte 83 affected sales.

Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
I really hate to go here but instead of trying to re-read that WHOLE post on the Douglass cars....I thought they ALL were striped with Yenko stripes...even the asterisk cars ....yes/no ?
|
Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Hi Belair,
I spoke to Ken about this. The early 70 picture he has of the car shows it without stripes. On Ed's site he does state that one car was to be delivered without stripes. http://www.copo.com/L72-VIN-69-Douglas-Camaro.htm Clint is going to check in the door area (he thinks the doors are original, but not the fenders, of his car(now painted blue) to see if he sees any stripe remnants, but he didn't see any very easily as of late last night. He does have title history back to the original owner though so let's see what happens. I for one would like to hear from an original owner also! If he can get in touch with his original owner, I have a shot of maybe finding mine too? Do you think they knew each other? Two twin cars coming in at the same time on the same transporter? Let's see! |
Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Bob,
Yes,they were all to have been striped, but for the one exception which has been found, which was Hugger Orange. With the Estate Document count at 22 and Jack's count at 25-1=24 there could be a couple more which did not have the stripe kit, based on the info. we have to work with. I received a welcomed call from Clint regarding his Douglass COPO*Yenko. He can correct me if the info. provided is incorrect regarding his car. I have not seen it. The picture he told me about is Circa 1971 and the car had just come out of a body shop for repairs. It was hit in the rear quarter pannel area. There are no stripes/badges on the car in the picture. The car was repainted complete at least once again thereafter. Color change to blue. The only "original paint" is what is left under the blue paint. This is not a pristine survivor car and since we know that at least some of the panels/fenders had been changed as well as repainted and then color changed it would not be the best example to find any stripes on. There were Yenkos from Douglass (plural) which soon had the stripes removed (very old post) to maintain a stealth sleeper appearance but we don't know if they were originally invoiced to Canonsberg or Hinsdale. I too think it would be cool for Clint to find some difinitve info.as to how his car was sold to the public when new. Good luck with your quest and post some pics of the car if you can. Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
You might try checking the back of the hood. Many times extra striping was wrapped under the rear...BKH

Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Stefano, was Jack working with a fellow by the name of Buxbaum/Classics when he went back to the original building on Ogden Ave? I've heard that when Buxbaum acquired Grand Sport #1 that it was restored at a shop in Geneva, Ill. and that he actually put a few street miles on it , but I'm not sure whether that was at Hinsdale or after they moved Classics out to Joliet.

Re: Jack Douglass Yenko(shor)
Yes, they were both involved with that venture.
