Doug Thurley Headers
Does anyone know what is going on with Doug Thurley and his headers. I odered a new set of headers for my ZL-1 right after I came limping home from collinsville with the blown headgasket and still do not have my headers. Summit tells me they are back ordered at Doug's. Now they are telling me March

Mark;
Thanks for the tip, but I'm trying to get the Thorleys since thats what was offered on the Yenko cars - just don't know what's taking so long, can't take this long to put the black ceramic coating on https://www.yenko.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/frown.gif M |
Re: Doug Thurley Headers
I have the black ceramic coating, both inside and out on the exhaust system of my race bikes.
Very durable, and the pipes seem to cool down and disapate heat much faster. |
Re: Doug Thurley Headers
I have not received my headers yet and I am going with the shiny headers, rust resistant. Oh god I forgot what they call those. Some high tech term. Anyway. I will keep you posted. Capt. Carl www.batterytoppers.com

Re: Doug Thurley Headers
What'd the black ceramic cost? Does it keep it's lustre? Just curious, I haven't seen any in person.

Re: Doug Thurley Headers
I went with the flat black ceramic coated inside and out. I have Doug Thorley 1 7/8" headers on my 396/375. I like the flat black look. They have kept their coating on but have gotten kind of gray or a lighter shade of black on parts that get the hottest. I do believe they are cooler running than others I have used....I think mine were about $325 to have them blasted and coated.

Re: Doug Thurley Headers
The Thorleys were around $450, and the ceramic coating was another $150, so approx. $650 with shipping. They are 1 5/8 tubes with 3", 3bolt collectors. I wanted the flat black look, since the high lustre jet-coat will cause a deduction at the serious shows. I think the Thorleys had a sticker on them, anyone know what it looked like back in the day? I'm sure it burned off pretty quickly.

Re: Doug Thurley Headers
Do they really take off points for having a coating on headers? That's one of the reasons I'm not going to worry about judging when my 69 crossram JL8 car is finished. I'd rather have my parts properly protected than worry about losing points. Weren't the headers back then just painted with black paint which would burn off in about a week anyway? So in reality, a rusty header would be the only correct finish, right?

Re: Doug Thurley Headers
Jeff;
Yes, I have seen it done at Vette-Fest, 1point for the coating and 1point for having Hooker Headers instead of the Thorleys. Personally, I have the manifolds and smog system installed, but want the headers for certain shows. It is pretty tough to document that headers (or Atlas wheels) came on any of the deuces, we don't know of any. However, the judges at vette-fest and AACA allow them, so I bought some. I'm sure the orig. headers lost their paint pretty quickly, and 'rusty' headers might be correct for a survivor car. A full resto car should look like it did on day one (or day two), and should not have old looking headers. Therefore, use today's technology to make them look like they did back in the day. M |

The middle decal is the closest but I'm not sure. I will keep a lookout for an old pic. I thought it said Thorley Headers on the decal. Also what part # did you come up with on the Accel distributor? Dave |
Re: Doug Thurley Headers

I've seen the old Thorley headers had a decal down low by the collector. I think it was a black & white decal. Old style Doug Thorley decals are on ebay every so often-same one they used on the header. Like you said it would probably burn off pretty quickly. I made up a display board out of a inexpensive picture frame(Walmart special) that has a glass covering and placed a period correct decal for every speed part that is used on my car under the glass. Used print board from a art frame shop as a background. A nice thing about this method is I can add decals or move them around because the backing on each decal is not removed. Plan to display it along the car. You could do this with your Yenko paperwork, photos etc. Dave [Edited by whitetop (02-13-2002 at 12:25 PM).] |

Re: Doug Thurley Headers
Carl,
Did you go through Doug's Headers (owned by Doug Thorley) or Thorley's Headers (Doug sold to partner)? Here are the respective web sites. www.dougsheaders.com and www.thorleyheaders.com Would the headers be more correct from Thorleys since that is the orig business tha provided them back in the day? Or more correct from Doug's because Doug Thorley is the owner? Edit: Sorry your link to the stickers kinda answers which shop you are dealing with. [Edited by DjD (02-15-2002 at 10:59 AM).] |
Re: Doug Thurley Headers
My wife called to inquire as to what 'headers' are, since they just showed up at the house.
Don't know what's going on with Carl's set, might be a problem with Thorley Headers. They only advertised Tri-Y headers for my application, but that wasn't what Yenko was advertising. When they finally were able to tell me the item # for their non tri-y's a week later, I was already ordering them from Doug's. Thorley told me to call Summit or J.C. Whitney to place an order! Doug's let me do it over the phone or through their website. They better fit like a glove, since that's their claim to fame. M |
