That’s awesome. I’m assuming you were able to work out a deal to reunite it with the car. I just love orange chevelles…

That’s great! I have a similar story. A good friend of mine bought the original engine out of my 69 Z in 1976, before I owned it. I bought the car in 1978 and had my engine builder, RCD Racing Engines build me a 302. My friend got married in 1980, and his wife said “You have me now, you don’t need that car”. So he sold it without telling me! I contacted the guy he sold it to and offered him my 302 for my original 302. He said no! I kept in touch with I’m for over 25 years, sending him Christmas cards and trying to get on his good side! Finally about 7 years ago he called me and said if you want this engine, come and get it! Bad news is that he had dropped a valve, and it’s gonna need a sleeve in one cylinder. But the vin is clearly stamped in the side of the block. I will be having it built when I get home from Florida!

Congratulation Buddy! Glad your perseverance paid off....

scuncio 02-02-2026 03:01 PM

Congratulations, that is a great story. Looking forward to seeing pics.

AnthonyS 02-02-2026 03:15 PM

Yes, both stories are awesome! Yay!

Woj 02-02-2026 03:51 PM

Congratulations. Hope the engine is in good shape. Great feeling I's sure to be getting it back.

woodfarms1957 02-10-2026 01:12 AM

don't want anyone to be mislead as I did find the motor.
I talked to him on the phone today for the first time. he says he dont want to sell it. -----
Bob

daveg 02-10-2026 01:44 AM

Figure out what his dream trade is.
Build him a motor or whatever.
Get creative.

I have acquired quite a few items that were "NOT FOR SALE"

a update on the mq engine
after some discussion over 1 month the guy said he would sell it for 95,000.

guess what i said!
Bob

ryanchevelle 02-22-2026 10:41 PM

Why is the guy so attached? He doesn’t have to sell it to you but putting a number like that only creates frustration. Prob not easy but keep a level head don’t make him dislike you and maybe see if you can get somewhere with time. In the meantime I’d be looking for an equal motor to possibly offer as trade plus a little cash on top to get it done.

Bill Pritchard 02-23-2026 01:08 AM

That's the 'Make Me Sell It' price. Sorry you didn't have better luck :(

ruralrte66 02-23-2026 02:00 AM

9500.00 That's a deal. All Joking aside. I have the same problem. I keep getting the run around between three different people. Frustrating. Hope your Luck turns around.

woodfarms1957 02-23-2026 09:43 PM

he really want the car - he told me that it would increase the value of my car so he needs more than it is worth.
Bob

carnut4life 02-23-2026 10:37 PM

What a shame, most of us would consider it an honor to reunite a car with its original engine. Hopefully in time he'll see the light and reconsider.

66cayne 02-23-2026 10:38 PM

well, he's not wrong. It would increase the value of your car. The question is, how much? Would the original engine add that kind of value? Probably not. What are original drivetrain Yenkos selling for?

Pro Stock John 02-23-2026 10:43 PM

So what does he have a bare longblock? What would the regulars on here think that's worth?

woodfarms1957 02-24-2026 12:31 AM

he has rebuilt the engine. plus intake carb dist says it been run.
i am thinking 10- 15 .
bob

daveg 02-24-2026 12:41 AM

If you are not selling your car, go silent on him.

The motor is worth MORE to YOUR car only.

Sounds like the old "how bad do you want it" game.
He may be enjoying the game.

When it comes up for sale it is a safe bet you will be contacted.

Patience is best now as aggression did not work.

the427king 02-24-2026 03:07 AM

motor

Bob you have the buildsheet . You also have a picture of the original motor and vin. Why buy it for anything more than what its worth to anyone else. ? If you had no paperwork and no picture of the motor you would probably then pay a bunch for it. If i had someones buildsheet I wouldnt send them a copy, because theres no need for them to buy it .....Ill buy your car for market price..send me a CE motor with it and im good ...

woodfarms1957 02-24-2026 02:15 PM

thanks 427king-
i am going to build the car - and yes i have a ce motor along with all the other correct parts for the car, and just know if i do ever decide to part with it you will be the first call i make.
thank you
bob

I would have told him, fine I'll sell you the car...

For $200,000, with the original engine it should be worth $250... right ?

Same here... I'd offer him the car for an insane price.

Pro Stock John 03-03-2026 04:43 PM

I would leave it alone for now, at least you know where the engine is.

Lets focus on the positive, congrats on finding this car, what's the back story?

That’s what we all want to say but saying that prob doesn’t help reunite the engine with that car

If the engine owner was willing to pay an exorbitant price to obtain the car, why not sell it to him. Thinking he will ever release the engine anything close to a reasonable price is probably a fair tale. Maybe his heirs will be sensible, but will any of us still be around for that ?

woodfarms1957 03-05-2026 02:47 PM

Thanks everyone for your input. I have wrote a little history of the car in my garage if anyone would care to look. As it says, i purchase the car 30 years ago. I started to work on the car a couple of time but life got in the way. ---- But now it is finally made it to the top of the list!!!! I do have a ce block that will be good for now.

Read your story (in your garage), that's really cool.

That's awesome the engine has survived despite getting separated from the car all the way back in 1972.

scuncio 03-06-2026 04:05 AM

Wow, another Kansas built COPO Chevelle - what is this, the third or fourth one that has come across this site?

It appears you've somewhat moved-on from the idea you're going the get the original engine back for your restoration at the moment. I think you made the right choice. Would love to see pics along the way of your restoration journey.
