Dana 68 Camaro
Saw very cool new video by Jerry Heasly came out yesterday . Supercar Workshop involved .
|
This video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wc9XgtAadv8
Edit: So someone bought this car, maybe one of you guys? :) |
Great story.
Just got done watching it and was going to post here as well. |
I don't see what the big deal is it's only a one owner 427 Dana with 10,000 miles.
Seriously what an incredible find. |
That hood and paint @ the 2:40 mark.
My heart sank when they described pulling the car out of a 70° garage, out into a much colder temp. |
Was interesting to hear that restoration shop guy talk about how Dana in '68 would use SB cars and swap them over to 427s.

Such a cool story and find. |
Wonder what the tach redline is....
|
5,000 probably. unless dana changed it to 6,000
|
I didn't quite catch what paint was on the car when the original owner bought it.... orange with metal flake?
|
I never saw any evidence if it was a 350 car or a 396 car.
But the AC box was in the trunk - small block. Yes, it was "candy tangerine flake", IIRC. |

Saw this posted on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1ZBgMhpzxq/
"Any former employees of Dana Chevrolet on Long Beach Blvd in Southgate remember this 1968 427 Dana Camaro sold new at Dana Chevrolet in Southgate. Was painted Orange and Champaign Gold Metallic Ed "Big Daddy" Roth style with pin stripes we believe at the dealership Anyone remember this car? I know the history of the car since Aug 1969 when it sold at Dana Chevrolet with 4k miles on it. Not looking for the car we know where it is. We are just trying to find more history on the" |
yes, but when he tokk it out of the heated garage into freezing temps the lacquer cracked with the sudden temp cahange and he had to repaint it.

Grabbed a couple of screenshots.

Will be interesting to see how the car is restored, if the hood is the color of car as purchased from DANA seems like matching that color would be the way to go rather than painting original color per trim tag. If car was painted this color by DANA or for DANA that would be as much a part of cars provenance as the 427 and would look just to cool IMO. After rewatching video I see his friend recalls car was candy tangerine and very deep paint sounds like the candy tangerine fogged with the gold metallic perhaps , to make the car look the way it looked when he drove off DANA’s lot would be challenging but make the car that much more special again IMO .
|
per the pics, dana just painted the body orange and the hood gold heavy metalflake.

Here’s a 05/68 LA Newspaper Ad w/ ‘68 Dana 427 4-Spd. also $700 Paint job. I’ll look for more Ads but any chance Stock #257 is noted on Sales paperwork? :beers: ~ Pete . |

I was hoping the license plate might help you in your search. He paid four grand for it so there can't be too many used 68 Camaros that sold for four grand in 1969. |

Found another slightly earlier Ad from 04/68 w/ a few more details. Same STK257 noted also 427/425 so likely a CE L72 + Mag Wheels also Custom Paint and lo miles, sure sounds like the car at Dana but more than a year before sold to Vietnam Vet Owner.:flag: :beers: ~ Pete . |
Did the community know about this one owner car?
Also, does the community have a feel for how many first gen Camaros were converted by Dana? |

I tried searching the CA Plate a few days before this thread appeared here but no luck also didn’t expect any hits being the car was never advertised by Plate Owner. I’ll look for more but w/ details noted in Ad above, good chance STK257 is the subject car. As to other known built Dana cars, let’s hope Member 68Dana pops in as he may have info to share w/ research he’s done over the years on his amazing ‘68 Dana 427 car that was sold and shipped new through a Dealer here in Ontario Canada. :beers: ~ Pete . |
I sent him a PM, maybe he'll see the notification in his email.

Ed Roth (Rat Fink) did paint jobs like that.
He did heavy metal flake, pin stripes, and tangerine colors. Roth had a shop in South Gate Ca. |

Found a couple more 1968 Newspaper Ads w/ ‘68 427 Camaros @ Dana. Again, STK257 noted in previous Ads could be a CA Plate or Stock #, 01/68 Ad below notes TEK410 but there’s no Plate # in the 11/68 Ad although Ser.5210 noted which if last Serial digits, they’re not the same as Subject L303612. Interesting too is the 11/68 Ad also notes Metal Flake Paint but is likely a different car than previous Ads w/ STK257? Still hoping Member 68Dana drops by w/ some wisdom to share! :beers: ~ Pete . |
