Advice from members please
I want to send my dated correct 3910 carb to Eric for a rebuild. I’m scared to send it afraid it will get lost in this crazy shipping stuff going on. It’s a constant thing going on in my area about packages getting lost either by sending or receiving.
Question, what’s my carb worth IF it gets lost. I want to make sure I get enough insurance to cover a loss. It would cost me about 80 bucks for gas to take it to him. That’s an open option! Thanks, |
For the 80 bucks I’d bring it myself. Shipping with insurance any good way will be somewhere close to that.
|
I've had a couple packages lost in shipping in the past year so for 80 bucks I'd take it myself too. Getting to meet Eric and see his place would be an added bonus.
|
I also concur, the $160 and however long the trips would take would be worth the peace of mind to me...
Cheers, Anthony |
Road trips are ALWAYS worthwhile for some adventure and peace of mind. I have bought NOS panels for my Camaro in Buffalo, NY Tulsa, OK St Claire Shores, MI and Kingston area of TN. Every one was retrieved in person and brought home to avoid the chance of damage, loss or theft.
Enjoy the trip...:burnout: |
Thanks all, I was leaning toward taking it up to him. It would be a task just to find one then have it restored. Best option.

I buy and sell a lot of parts and ship most all of them. Loss is very rare. Damage definitely happens but 99 percent of the time it is due to poor packing, not carrier negligence. I would ship it. Maybe ask Eric how many lost parcels he had encountered. I’m
sure he has received many damaged ones but that probably is from poor packaging as stated above. There is a heavy duty container specifically made for shipping Holley carbs. I had a carb shipped to me in one and it seems bulletproof. Thanks, Jason |
This is the carb shipping container. Kinda pricey but you would have it forever. They don’t do a good job showing pictures of it. I can post pictures of the one I have here when I’m back at my shop. The carb physically bolts to the container.

If u dont want to drive , i would overnight it, risk of loss is alot less as it gets special handling from the get go. I do this with very expensive ferrari parts - like 30-40K for 3 carbs. Insurance is a hugh hassle to get thru - so the additional overnight $$ is worth it.
if u insured for your value and the time it takes to find another etc, the overnight pays for itself. just my thoughts...... |
Take great pics prior and insure for the full replacement value. When I ship rare stuff I always overnight. Dated replacement carb are available. It is all about your comfort level. Don't lose sleep over it!

Ship it UPS Red or Blue.
We ship THOUSANDS of packages via UPS in my business every year. Zero issues. Packing is the key. FedEx destroys so much merchandise, we only use them collect on customer accounts who have a Fedex contractual agreement. |
I use PIRATESHIP.com to Ship Ground UPS to Eric..........
Pirate Ship charges $1 for every $100 of added insurance........ Plenty of Bubble Wrap and Either a Thicker/Heavier Box or Double Box PIRATESHIP.com has much lower pricing than buying a label at a UPS Store PIRATESHIP.com has lower rates than many business's with UPS Accounts |
FYI
https://www.vintagemusclecarparts.com/faqs-shipping/ As stated above I the Shipper caused my own problems, in my instance, DOUBLE BOX! |
Eric, knows me well. I make wood crates out of 3/4" shelving wood and 1/2 plywood. I use the shelving wood for the sides and the plywood for the top and bottom. I then buy four carriage bolts, 12 washers and 12 nutd drilling the holes in the plywood that I to use the mount the carb securely. The crate is not expensing to make. I also use only Fed Ex 2 day Air, insuring you have their "A" delivering the crate. Never had any thing damaged or lost doing this. Good luck with you decesion.

I'm sure you would contact Eric before you go, but verify that you can go to his house first. I'm local and he didn't want me to go to his house as its in a residential neighborhood and I think didn't want the traffic. I met him at a local engine shop to hand it over to him and pick it up.
|
Over insure the box and ship it UPS. 2 box method is always great. Don't skimp on bubble wrap. Small bubble style only. Hand it off to a UPS service center not a store.
I think the suggestion to hand deliver a package form KY to OH is extravagant! UPS and FedEx ship billions of parcels annually. We all have horror stories but it is very rare. |
I dont even think its so much about damage, its about it getting lost. How could you replace it? I sent my Holley 3910 to him next day air, but that was back when shipping was more reasonable. If I could have drove it, I would have. I was more worried about losing it, even at that time. I also agree Next day items usually fare better and you are not waiting the extra time to see if it shows up.
|
Whatever you decide, never put FRAGILE on it,as workers will treat it like a Basketball regardless of who they work for.
|
Maybe even drop an air tag in it to try and track it.
|
Buy an Apple Air tag and tape it to the inside of the box. You can track it anywhere.
|
👍
It made it to Eric. I shipped overnight UPS yesterday. I didn’t say anything because I was afraid I’d jinx it!! LOL😂
Thanks for the advice all. Later |
