1965 442 Post Coupe - New Addition
29 Attachment(s)
I always wanted an early A body ('64 GTO post coupe) but this one ended up following me home. '65 442 post coupe. Provincial White with a red bucket seat interior. 87,000 miles. Column shift Jetaway automatic. 3.23 axle. Window sticker, Protect-O-Plate, dealer key chain and even the actual Hot Rod Magazine that the original owner looked at and saw the road test in the issue of the '65 442. It was then he decided a '65 442 was for him. Lightly optioned. One repaint many years ago. Original unmolested car. 3 owner, known history. Driven 7000 miles since 1993. Previous owner lived down the street from my wife's cousin. Looked at it 8 years ago. Wasn't the right time so I passed on it. 8 years later the gentleman still had it and offered it to me again but for less than before (it was a good deal then!) I had to have it.
Car came with a treasure trove of extras also. NOS Plugs, oil filters, manuals, repop battery and so much more. Even a roll of the correct vinyl material the original owner bought months later after he took delivery to recover the armrests that he knew were going to fail (they did.) Plan is to have the Rochester 4GC rebuilt properly, tune it and just do some general cleaning, reinstall the washer lines and bottle and enjoy. Possibly add a limited slip (didn't order an Anti-Spin) and maybe a 2004r. I have a nice 2004r out of a low mileage 307 Delta that is perfect for it. The Jetaway 2 speed was rebuilt years ago and shifts just fine but that 1.76 first gear is not my cup of tea. Just thought I'd share with the group. |

65 442...
Beautiful car...very nice!
I really like those clean looking garages in the photos...wish we had one  |

Those garages: So do I! |
Very handsome car. Always liked that body style.
Will be a beast with the OD trans. I have a 4L60E in my 68 El Camino, and it was a massive improvement over the PG trans. |

----Gorgeous 442, especially that interior. I had a close buddy back in the mid-60's that had two post 442's pretty much ordered just like yours. The reason he had two was because he was a horrible driver. I used to cringe every time I rode with him. Neither car lasted more than 6 months and gathered dents constantly!....Bill S

Really a cool ‘65 Olds 442. Love that White / Red combo.
Just my opinion ….. leave it as built. It’s almost 60 years old and still retains its factory powertrain. It’s a relaxing vintage cruiser for fun on nice days, not to mention first era of the Muscle Car. Thanks for sharing. |

Hey Jim, why stop there, drop in an LS motor too 🙄 |

So if someone wanted to modify this cool old ‘65 muscle car from it’s stock 2 speed Jetaway to a whatever 3 speed auto, or overdrive unit what happens to the factory steering column and shift indicator window ??
How far does one butcher a classic? Sorry for my vent, but I have seen this happen way to often on these types of cars. |

People who have the done the swap generally use the Lokar linkage kit. as far as the shift indicator lens, I would leave it alone as well as the column as I wouldn't be shifting it. I'd want it to be a swap that wouldn't permanently alter anything whatsoever. Nothing is decided yet. The Jetaway might stay. We'll see... |

https://shiftworks.com/collections/c...s/column-shift looks like the universal unit is for you...they even have indicator plates you can swap in. |
I have a strong purist streak in me, but transmissions, particularly 2sp automatics, are such an inhibitor of performance and driving enjoyment, that I’m in favor of substitutions that don’t involve much in the way of tunnel or frame mods. Swapping a 2004r for a PG/Jetaway/Super Turbine 300 is such a transformative modification that nobody can really see if you execute it properly. Also, 2004R gives vintage BOP guys a bolt on transmission options without adapters or anything. It is literally adding a new low and a new high gear to the mix. Functionally this will improve performance more than most bolt ons and make highway driving less stressful on the car (and you). I feel the same way about upgrading steering boxes for faster ratio and better feel. Getting the linkage right and making the gear indicator appear factory is part of the challenge, but also part of the fun in finessing a solution that looks period correct and proper. My friend put a Borgeson power steering box in his 50k original mile ‘67 Fairlane GT because he got tired of fighting Ford external units and loved how the Borgesons drove. He painted everything to match, used OEM style hoses, used a correct Ford pump and even Ford guys don’t notice it unless you point it out.

Put roughly 170 miles since it came home (previous owner drove it 100 miles in the last 10 years.) Ran into town with it to run a couple errands Friday. Glorious fall Michigan weather
Sunday warranted a drive with the wife to a couple cider mills for a doughnut and some cider. Had a smile glued to my face the whole trip. This is what it's all about! |
Sweet car! Also, one of the best October weekends ever in MI. Incredible weather.
|
----You are in Plymouth and I'm in Marine City. Sure wish I could take a long look at your new treasure. Hope to see it at some get together around here sometime....Bill S

Why not take it to MCACN and have it go through Steve Shauger & Co's judging program? Lots of neat originality to this car and I think others would enjoy looking it over as-is.

It’s pretty interesting how the “4-4-2 Performance Package” is called out on the window sticker. GM cars usually consist of a letter prefix in front of two digits for every option but “4-4-2” is straight to the point . . . . and cheap!

[QUOTE=GM Powertrain;1658587]That's one I haven't heard of. What's the details?
----Pastieners (sp) is on Woodward at about 14 mile on the east (might be considered north) side and they have a Saturday morning cars and coffee every week. Starts early and is mostly over at noon at the latest. Their store is a great automotive book, magazine and diecast model place. Think you would love it. Lots of GM history in the Pastiener family! The store has a website. I don't get down there too often as it's about an hour, but I definetly could make an effort,,,,LOL!...Bill S |
