'70 Camaro SS396, #s L-78, Daytona Yellow, Docs, Gorgeous.
Really nice car and RARE...seems very fairly priced at a few bucks shy of $80k.

Very nice car,but needs Day 2 wheels to break up the yellow.

Wow, a cool car and with M-20 and 3.55 gears that's an ideal combination. I wonder why they did not put back on all the RS exterior trim when it was restored? I like it, but agree some different wheels would liven it up a bit. With only 600 made and a special color, I think this is one rare car.
|
Interesting that all the paperwork describes an M20 as "close ratio"... :dunno:
|
in '70, M20 was the call out code for a manual 4 spd, didn't designate specific 4spd/Muncie to be installed
|
3.55 was a performance ratio?

Muncie Trans...

There are other differences too regarding pricing for the engine and trans...seems to me the L78 would be the same price for any model it was available in. Maybe the price changed during the model year ?? As for the 'performance axle' call out...my understanding has always been the 3.55 gear was the default ratio for the L78 in 1970 and perhaps before. Interested to hear what other info folks have.... -wilma :scholar: |
The window sticker shows the correct zone and dealer for Steakley Chevrolet in Temple. The shipping report would confirm that, also.

The BAT listing shows no paperwork at all except for a small fragment of the tank sticker which doesn't show the engine. I wonder how it now has all of the Steakley paperwork???
Here is a different 1970 L-78 also from BAT. This one has "SS" wheels and it sure looks a lot better than the correct factory wheels. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...l78-camaro-ss/ |
Do the docs look correct? Found after the bat ad?
|
BIN now lowered $10K to $69,995. If a real car, then the price is quite attractive. It just seems suspect that the car was for sale listed on BAT with an L-78 without any documents except a scrap of the tank sticker which does not list the engine and bid to $43K two years ago and now it's on Ebay with pristine full set of documents. A VIN search shows it was sold on Ebay for $14K out of CA painted purple as an SS350 car originally an automatic and converted to 4 speed. Hard to say what's true for sure. If it was an automatic from the factory that would rule out being an L-78 except for the unicorn car that Charley saw in CA.
Perhaps pre-resto photos exist that might show evidence of L-78, but for a full set of paperwork to appear would need an explanation from the Seller for a potential buyer to have confidence they are buying a legit L-78. Norwood built cars have "L78" stamped on their trim tag, so easier to document without paperwork. VN cars a bit more difficult. Needs a few things to make it more correct, but for the price seems like a nice enough car and couldn't be duplicated for the asking price. |
70 l78...
Now the discussion is getting interesting...I was tempted to bring up the document questions. The VIN search info is an eye opener...
Another good example of the unique knowledge base that exists on the SYC... The real cars will always do well in the daylight...the others need to stay in a dark garage. -wilma |
I hope it is real, not many of the 70 L78 cars left around. A nice set of Mag wheels would make this car look a lot different.
I would think some of the guys here on the site could tell if the paper work is fake. Looks like the seller would step up and clear the air on this matter. |
It is a neat car but probably need to do some research before add this one to a collection.

Original paperwork would have definitely been mentioned in that 2019 Facebook ad , that guy covered all the bases on that sale!!!
|
Short of a miracle the current owner somehow located all the pristine 50 year old paperwork, it is unlikely to be original to the car Could be a real L-78 car, but I wouldn't count on the paperwork being authentic.
With that said, you couldn't duplicate the car for the asking price. Those are hard to find and expensive parts. Would easily cost more than $100K to build that car if you paid someone. |
Needless to say very suspect. The past ads and vin search make it very unbelievable that this is a real L78 car.
|
Unreal how the Internet reveals all its secrets...wow
|
Blow up and look at the pic of the door hinge area on the drivers side and you can see the quality of workmanship.....
|
Does the RF fender have the later recessed oval for later air filters?
