Re key service

trying to find some one to re key my door locks to match my ignition key

X66 714 05-26-2023 05:21 PM

I would think any quality lock shop could do that....Joe

What year is the car ,, The stainless steel cap on the door locks has to be destroyed to get the lock apart & the replacement with the 4 tabs does not look right.

its a 69 camaro

Call Jessers Keys in Ohio. He advertises in the NCRS driveline. He is not cheap but may be able to help.
I just had all of this done on my 69 Chevelle and used the original caps. Local Charlotte guy did it.

Would it be easier to re key the ignition to match the door key?

Too Many Projects 05-27-2023 01:42 AM

I had a guy in Montezuma Iowa build me a set of door locks and ignition for a '67 C10. Very reasonable too. I don't have any contact info for him, other than on the 1967-72 truck forum, but sent him a PM asking for an email for you to contact him. If I get it, I'll PM it to you.

I left 3 voicemails for Jessers. Never a return call

I would like information on this as well, I have a trunk key and an ignition key but no door key. The door locks must have been replaced and the key was lost.
Thank you for posting this.

Originally the door / trunk is a different key than the ignition key on a 1969 Camaro No? Bill

KevinW 05-28-2023 01:52 AM

No, Factory 69 used for door and ignition the square key and the oval was used for trunk and glove box. Some repro sets have a square key for ign only and oval key for doors, trunk & glove. But that is not correct.

I had one of those incorrect repro set (bought a long time ago) and had to have a local locksmith shop cut some original square key door locks to match the ign key that I had already installed in a real tilt column. They did install the tabbed covers, but once installed, that should not be noticeable (hopefully).

Thanks for correcting me. Bill

Oval key fit console door too, when applicable.

I would love to find someone willing to key me some locks too;
I have the codes, and two of the original tumbers are here, but I want all new coded as original if I can.
My hair brained logic is because GM-Canada still has these key codes on file, and should anything happen, I could (theoretically) be able to go into nay GM dealer, and get a new set of keys for my car.

I had a lead a while ago, but he (like others mentioned here) hasn't replied.

Is this for your '70 Formula ? If so, I can get you contact info. He only does pre 80's vehicles.

Question so on a 69 you can have replacement keys made by using the code on a door lock?

Kurt S 06-06-2023 09:40 PM

Yes, if you find a locksmith that has the lookup tables.
