Gas Pump Refurb
9 Attachment(s)
With Retirement comes time to apply to efforts of "continuing" the Overhaul & Conversion of Livery on this vintage pump. Years ago I spotted a Bad shape Wayne 'Blend-o-Matic' Model: 511E.5 on Craigslist- Oregon. My Buddie Tom & I packed and secured the ECON-O-BLEND pump from the antique mall. I had seen a few pumps talked about on this site and I am not a Gas-o-file certified nut just a fella whom wanted a SUNOCO themed pump in the garage to compliment my 68Z28 for obvious historical reasons (Go Penske & Donohue 68/69). I started the Project YEARS ago and It stalled in Paint Jail & has since was released on good behavior just in time. Thank God for Jeff's great Paint work. I totally guessed on paint colors using photos and a House of Color Paint Chips album, to the Point I have NO clue what we used in the end. I source services via a Local Powder Coater and Plater to refurb many parts. The Unit was heavily damaged from Rodent and Wasp habitat periods, so much so the Vedder & Root computer is in my opinion beyond repair. I was temped to make the unit 'dynamic' operable but have decided to take the easy way out. Static. Enjoy. & Get out there a scoop up these pumps.

Very cool.

Looking good. The old pumps are cool. I have 9 of them in my collection but only 3 are done....Joe
|
I have a few as well and they are cool as display items and also have some signage, cans and oil bottles. I primarily collected Mobil / SOCONY / Gargoyle / Vacuum Oil as they are all part of what became Mobil Oil.
Looking forward to additional pictures as you make progress on the resto. A bit easier than a car resto, but same process. |
Be careful as they become addictive. I have made many trips down to Washington and the PNW to pick up groups of pumps, and had 18 in my collection at one point. They are fun to restore and I have done many of them over the years. Mostly electrics and clock faced pumps from the 30's and 40's, but like them all.

Looks Great, Thanks for sharing

Thanks Guys; I re-ballasted (Removed the Leaky Magnetic and used a modern electronic ballast) & re-lamped the Lighting Fixture (Hard to find the 20" T-8's). I was going to Add/Modify the Top for a aftermarket glass or plastic globe but decided against that. I have No Idea what Branding it was originally. Tons of Red, White, Blue and Green and "wood decal" laminate on it just a hod-podge of non matching colors Any guesses? This all started when My dad had a derelict Glass Bowl tower at the corner of his garage more as a Bumper to protect the building. Then I kept seeing Oil Lubsters at swap meets then drooling over the pumps.

I was pretty sure the "select blend" was Sunoco. Sun Oil Company was one of the key stock holders of Wayne Pump Company. They were having special pumps made at least by 1945. General Petroleum, Conoco, & Mobil were key stock holders....Joe

3 of those 4 stock holders had these special pumps made by Wayne Pump Co. for their stations. These are part of my collection. On oldgas.com I was known as "script top dude"...Joe

"CUSTOM-BLENDED" I am thinking the UNIT Might be a HANCOCK brand, possibly, not that it matter much, I am going Sunoco Blue and Yellow, Ha a Tribute Gas Pump, Non numbers matching, he he he |
Gas stations changes brands all the time. It's not like they could buy new pumps each time. Quick cheap paint job (brush or roller) & some decals & done. Sunoco for sure on that pump. Keep up the good work. The difference between doing a pump & a car is you get to see the end results in about 90 days for a pump :)

Wayne 511's were not exclusive to Sunoco, they were the majority though.
Kerr-McGee brand and other gas brands have been found pumping through a Wayne 511 Blender. |

Custom Base Rollers

I found a vintage set of Sears Metal Ball casters in Dad's garage and figured a way to adapt them to the gas pump base existing holes. I sourced alum round stock and machined adapters to allow the stems to be capture held in place with the Pump hovering around a 1/8" above the ground. This keeps the pump stable yet allows for controlled movement on a very flat concrete garage floor for maintenance and cleaning purposes. The holes are to close to the side so the casters are not able to swivel the full 360 but nonetheless it still works nice. Fun little project that put Dad's good Old (Vintage) Craftsman (Atlas) Lathe to use.

Now that’s cool. Nice work! I want to detail up the exterior of my shop like an old service station which will include a large awning, air hose reel, and a pump. There’s a guy down the street from me that has a few of the older pumps like yours in his yard. I think they’re just homes for cars right now.
Might have to wander down there and see about purchasing one. Or I might just try and make a replica! Looking good! Cheers Dave |

Thanks Guys;
Added an internal 120vac hot and switched receptacle; power for future globe and "animation" of the dual fuel-flow rotary indicators. |
Side Panels

More Progress; Side panels, Assembly, DIY polish of stainless steel & attaching selector, Should be Yellow or Chrome, I chose to keep it in the Orig enameled "white"

Front & Back Panels
2 Attachment(s)
My Painter Jeff R. did a great job, I then polished the corner stainless steel trim Vintage Logo from VIC's66. Both panels required "body" work & weld repairs to get them into usable condition.

They look wonderful....Joe

Thanks Joe, More progress soon. I can't wait to Pose it with a car or ten,,,,LoL

Window Glass

Worked on the upper access door glass, local glass provider supplied new cut and radius glass, Decal found on line, Rubber channel Trimmed then installed with Wayne glass channel plastic guides and steel retainers.

Fuel-flow rotary indicators
3 Attachment(s)
When I got the pump it was missing the premium fuel flow indicator, So I used Dad's old Atlas lathe and cut down some 1/4" sheet plexiglass & brass rod to Fab a likeness attempt. Missed the mark on a few details but It is hidden by the pump Computer facade and very little is visible. It will work for now.

Hose & Upper Doors Installed
2 Attachment(s)
Got the Six foot display gas hose hooked to retractor and a $15 Portland Swap meet Nozzle. I had to replace the Back side upper door with a stainless steel replacement, I had a earlier steel-plated and bent so I source a replacement item from Used Parts Vendor with the New glass & decal after time on the Polishing wheel and rubber trim, it is surely getting there.

Lookin' Great. I need to do a few more of mine...Joe

Looks Awesome, Great Job!!

Finished; Mounted the Veeder & Root Computer, Front Facia reveals, Internal Switch.
Done Poll: Globe Modification or Not<?> JIM *Note: The Computer was Solid with critter and hornet MESS, resulting in a rusted solid works. Impossible to animate with dual external dc motor drives to make the pump indications operational. I SO wanted to rig a set up that would display & learn the computer op's. Static it Remains. |
Looks great Jim. Not very many of those pumps got globes mounted to them. I'd say leave that one clean and on your next one (yes there will be more) go for a taller 6' pump and add a globe to that one. Anything circa 1938 to 1948 would make a great pump for you as your next one. Maybe look for another west coast brand (Bennett 541) and do it up in Richfield colors. Great look on those PNW colors!
|
Here's a Bennett 542 Twin I found in Seattle a few years ago. An au natural pair of untouched originals that were branded in Richfield.

Here's a little more inspiration to help get you deeper into your new addiction. (lol)
