1969 SS3396 LeMans Blue L78/4sp on BaT
Great color, great options. Paperwork looks nice. Love to hear the Chevelle faithful chime in on this.

That car is gorgeous!!

Nice ride. I am pretty sure this is the Chevelle that “Big Bill” from Scottsdale (am forgetting his last name at this time - Bruce, help me out here) had back in mid 2000’s. I remember him telling me his L78 was from L.I. and that the original parchment seats were preserved because the OO placed T-shirts over them. I knew it was low miles but thot it was more like 10-15K (but that is awhile ago!). This should be interesting to watch.

5k miles!?

Beautiful car! The original Frame Chevrolet building in Mineola, LI NY was still standing up until a few years ago when they tore it down to build a new Walgreens.

Love the comments on BAT. GOOD GRIEF. Like a bunch of old biddie women

My ever-failing memory seems to recall a car exactly like this for sale in the NYC metro area about 20 yrs ago. But, I'm also thinking that car had a number of dings, dents, & scrapes on the exterior, possibly incurred as a result of use and abuse drag racing - either on the streets or at the track. That would go a long way toward explaining the uber-low mileage and the need for a complete engine rebuild. If this is that same car, it's had to have some paint work done. Also curious is the vast appearance difference in the door armrest bases.

Steve/Bill - this rings a bell. I recall Big Bill wrestling with the ruff original paint and considering repainting the car. He didn’t bring it out to the Pavillions show because of the condition of the paint and unfortunately I did not get over to his house to see it.
|
Judging by the wear marks on the axle tubes, this car had ladder bars on it at some point. I would love to see the before pics in day-2 trim.
|
OK, I foraged thru my legacy files and found that Big Bill is Bill Hendry. I have his email and will drop him a note to see what he has to say about this cool ride.

Sam, I know who you are talking about but I couldn't remember his name? Sorry we were out of town, too! :headbang: |

Am pretty sure the “backstory” is available still. I am waiting to hear back from Bill Hendry and will let you know what he says. If I were a betting man, I’d say the original mileage, as I recall Bill H. told me, was 13K miles. We’ll see......:dunno: |

The stamping in the listing
|
Just heard from Big Bill. I sent him the link to the BaT auction...
“This is not my car but very close! I still have mine and it was orinally purchased at Benson Chev in Brooklyn, NY. Have complete owner history on mine and two original build sheets. My car has 14K original miles and i have talked to all owners and have statements on the mileage! My car is also a Farmington car also” So, close but no cigar! Sorry for the false start. |
Thanks for the follow-up, Sam :worship: Interesting that two practically identical low mileage cars from the same neck of the woods exist 52 yrs later.
Regarding the engine stamping, I'm no expert, but aside from the difference in the two zeros in the Tonawanda stamping, I don't see anything of particular concern :dunno: |
Saw the car a couple weeks ago and it is stunning!!!!!!!

Great looking car, but there are a lot of incorrect items on the car. Paint is too nice and the stripes are too high on both sides. The right person with the right parts could really make this car great. I think the stamp looks decent. The "O" after the T is a vowel, the second 0 is a numeric for the date. Still a very neat car with great docs.
|
Take a look at picture #92 on the BaT listing....rocker panel has a couple good scrapes in the paint down to the primer. Sun reflecting off the snow might make the paint look better than it really is?
