1969 YA SS Wheels?
 

Another question I have about these wheels....

What type fasteners are OEM correct for attaching the "SS" center caps? Phillips head screws, hex head cap screws, or???? Is there supposed to be any type of washer under the screw head, i.e. flat, lock, or both?

No, unfortunately it is not shown in the 69 Chevelle assembly manual....I have one and I looked [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif[/img]

I could pull the wheels off of my convertible and look at those screws, but the car is away from home in storage, so that's somewhat of a PITA....

I've only seen 2 Hex bolts used with no washers needed behind the retainer,originally.Obviously this is for the bolt on caps,and not the spring steel retained clip on caps used during most of the '70 production.
Becareful to not over tighten with the socket,as those pot metal threads can be stripped quite easily,especially after the cap has been re-plated and the acid weakens them.

Bill,

I believe the correct fastener for '69 is a large pan-head screw. It also had either a lock washer or captured external tooth star washer. I can check for sure on Sunday to be sure.

Incidentally, the gent that worked in the Baltimore factory told me that during the 69 production year, Chevrolet started including wooden-handled phillips screw drivers with the jack assembly so the customer could take off the SS cap with a tire change and be able to re-secure the wheel in the trunk. I don't know if all the factories did the same or not.

My 70 L34 has the YA SS wheels which came with phillips round head screws for the caps. Not sure it's correct, but have seen pics of other SS wheels with the same screws. Maybe both were used??

Rick, it's interesting that the 70 assembly manual has the components of that wheel illustrated, whereas the 69 manual does not.

Phil, I would certainly appreciate any further insight you could provide. I am thinking that my convertible has pan head Phillips screws to retain them, but it's been almost 15 years since I've had them off the car, so I can't be certain about that, or if there was any type of washer used. And since you mentioned it, I do recall hearing the wooden handle screwdriver story before, although I have certainly never seen or heard of one with a car.

Mark, I suppose it's certainly possible that different assembly plants used different type fasteners, or that there was a running change of type during the production year.

Bill, not 100% sure my are original to the car. If i remember, the phillips head screws did have a small flat washer...

Mark, was your 70 produced early in the model year? As Rick noted above, they went to the 'snap-on' type later in the year....I remember those well, because I had a friend who 'appropriated' a couple from a 70 SS Chevelle in a parking lot back in the day [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/shocked.gif[/img]

My 70 L34 is a Nova not a Chevelle. It's a third week of Jan. car... Most of the dates on the wheels are around Nov. time frame if i remember. So, i would say they are early wheels.

Here's what I have on some survivor wheels. I'm certain this is the correct fastener for 69 SS Center caps.

It is a pan head screw with a captured flat washer. Length, approximately 1/2&quot;. These are from a March of 69 set of wheels.

The screwdriver had a part # and appears in the appropriate jacking instructions.

Bill, found this pic in my 69 chevelle assembly manual in the J52 RPO section, shows the SS wheel and cap. I modified it so the part numbers show in the pic here. Wow, I never would have thought to look at the disc brake option page(s) for that! The 'SS' wheel was not a part of the J52 disc brake package, so it's odd to see that illustration there.

Bill, I actually stumbled on it looking for the info. I think because the disc brakes were standard for SS chevelles that may be why the drawing was included to show the SS wheel components, One might think they would be under L35 when they first mention the SS equipment. Take care, andy
