No good deed...goes un-punished!
We had a big rain storm here this morning...thunder/lightning...but, it blew thru pretty quick. So, while I was waiting for the sun to pop out, I was busy doing 'domestic chores'...what a good boy
I finally got to the shop and fired up the 70 L78 4spd car and headed out for a Sunday drive. A few miles into the excursion I noticed something in the front end...since I was heading toward the house, I decided to check out the problem. When I pulled into my neighbors driveway the right front wheel was smoking So, I will now move some cars around and get her jacked up to perform the diagnosis. I did notice the brakes pulling to the left...my guess is either a wheel bearing or caliper/brake hose issue...or both Bottom line...never do chores on Sunday! wilma Looks innocent sitting there...doesn't it? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-img_0080.jpg |

Damn, beat me to it. But serious Tom, you want to sell, let me know! Dan |
Re: No good deed...goes un-punished!
Well...that didn't take long.
Brake hose is shot...probably collapsed inside. Had to open the bleeder to get the caliper to release. Might as well change both hoses now and have it over with. Just another Sunday at the ranch...I guess it could have been worse So...what are the most correct replacements for this application?? wilma |
Re: No good deed...goes un-punished!
Guess what?...turns out I had two new hoses...forgot they were in the stash.
I'll use this as an excuse to go thru some other stuff...oil change, re-pack front bearings, tune-up, etc. I've been thinking about swapping out some radials mounted on rally wheels for a change of pace...maybe we'll throw that in too. But right now it's time for a bourbon wilma |
Re: No good deed...goes un-punished!
I did my hoses last year. Collapsed. I've heard of others failing too = 47 years of service life and no more.

Re: No good deed...goes un-punished!
Yeah...I guess almost 46 years of service for some rubber hoses is pretty good.

Nice looking Nova !

Re: No good deed...goes un-punished!
I had to replace the rubber brake hoses on two of my survivor 69 Chevelles last year. They all collapsed internally within the same year. 46ish years seems to be a limit on these.

Re: No good deed...goes un-punished!
I think you are correct about that number for these cars. Our 70 Hugger Orange car is pulling a little...could be the brakes need adjusting or more than likely the hoses are giving up...next in line for an inspection.
Better to be safe than... wilma |
Re: No good deed...goes un-punished!
My hoses lasted until 2004.
I initially had the calipers rebuilt, but that did not fix the problem. The rebuild lasted 11 years and one was seized again last year. I parked the car, as I did not have time to play with it and just fixed it last month. The sad part is, other than the test drive, my car is still sitting in the garage waiting for me to have time to take it out. |
