Wanted- Factory 1972 Nova SS oil pan & timing cove
Guys i am looking for a original 1972 Nova SS 350 cubic inch factory oil pan and timing chain cover. I recently purchased this car, need the correct oil pan and timing cover for this 350 ci engine. No aftermarket parts please, need original parts only, thank you.

Try Terry Heinze in Ohio. 419-265-3020. has many parts.

Re: Wanted- Factory 1972 Nova SS oil pan & timing cove
Would 1972 timing cover have the welded on timing tab?
I know I have a correct oil pan, but it is GRIMY. All I did was scrape off the top layer of crud. The timing cover from the same engine had a bolt on timing tab, so I don't think it is original. |
Re: Wanted- Factory 1972 Nova SS oil pan & timing cove
I have a cover. Its the type w/o the timing tab. I will check condition tonight.
Cover is decent. Steve. |
Re: Wanted- Factory 1972 Nova SS oil pan & timing cove
So, in 1972, the timing tab is not welded to the cover?
If so, I have grimy pan AND cover. |

Just want to be sure I am doing right by a member here. I have two pans that I believe are correct for 72 Nova SS, as well as the timing cover with the bolt on timing tab. 72 Nova SS still had the 8 inch balancer, correct? I know for a fact that the two pans came from 1971 and 1972 model pickup truck 350 engines, but believe they are the same as his Nova.
Pics follow. The two pans on the right are what I believe are correct for a 72 Nova. The third (larger) pan is from a Corvette. I am pretty good on parts ID up to 69, but not so much after that. Can someone confirm the two oil pans (he gets his pick) and timing cover are factory correct? OH, threw in a pic of the bird because he looks like such a tough guy. |
Re: Wanted- Factory 1972 Nova SS oil pan & timing cove
What does the inside of the pans look like
|
Re: Wanted- Factory 1972 Nova SS oil pan & timing cove
It is the standard built in windage set up, not the bolt-on windage tray & rail set up like the Corvette and Z got.

Re: Wanted- Factory 1972 Nova SS oil pan & timing cove
There was a difference between Truck oil pans & passenger cars.
It's been awhile,but I want to say a Truck has 2 baffles inside. |
Re: Wanted- Factory 1972 Nova SS oil pan & timing cove
A 72 didn't get any Hipo goodies, no 8 inch balancer, no windage tray.

I know the HP was down and that it didn't get the bolt on windage tray. But, are you certain SS Nova with a 350 DID NOT get an 8 inch balancer? That would surprise me very much. Doesn't matter to me, as I have one each of the timing tabs, and will provide whichever Dan needs. Just want to make sure he gets the right parts. Both are shown in the pic below.
Concerning the 2 baffles: I think you are confusing the large capacity truck pan with the pickup truck pan. Pickups (and G10 vans) just got the regular baffled oil pan, same as the cars. Check out the pic. You can see the double baffle on the large capacity pan on the left. . The one on the right is the same as the cars. If I am wrong, someone show me. |
Re: Wanted- Factory 1972 Nova SS oil pan & timing cove
In 72 only the L82 got the 8" balancer. Corvette and Z28. The pan on the right in your pic. is correct but w/o a bolt on windage tray for your Nova.

Re: Wanted- Factory 1972 Nova SS oil pan & timing cove
Agree Steve. Also i agree with the poster on the oil pan. I dont believe Chevy used a truck oil pan on the 72- Nova SS engine.

Re: Wanted- Factory 1972 Nova SS oil pan & timing cove
Agree the far right orange pan must be the one.

Re: Wanted- Factory 1972 Nova SS oil pan & timing cove
You're right. Some truck pans were used in passenger cars.
Not a large capacity truck, and although not for a '72 application, the #3830089 pan was used in both the 1964-67 Chevelle w/283 & 327cid.,and also shared in the 1965-69 series 10 thru 30 truck and G-10 & G-20 series truck with small block engines and did have 2 baffles in it. |
