69 Camaro big block starter 1108418
Can you guys tell me about my starter. Does everything look right? Cast iron nose cone etc? I pulled it apart tonight and its missing a brush. I want to r&r it with new bushings, brushes and whatever else it might need.
If you see anything out of whack, don't be shy! http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...314_203610.jpg http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...314_204944.jpg http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...314_203618.jpg http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...314_204841.jpg http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...314_204725.jpg http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...314_203553.jpg http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...314_170609.jpg http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...314_170540.jpg http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...314_203658.jpg http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...314_203628.jpg http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...314_204739.jpg http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...314_204753.jpg |
Re: 69 Camaro big block starter 1108418
Can anyone at least confirm the nose cone is correct? Also, can you point me to a good source for all the brushes etc that I can order from?
Thanks. |

Re: 69 Camaro big block starter 1108418
I've seen the question of how many bolt holes the 69 big block starter should have posted many times. I've yet to see a definitive answer spelled out with a yes or no / 2 or 3. I'm not saying it's not out there, but I wasn't able to find it. Dan did say the cap is good. He restores them, so I believe him when he says it's good, but there is a note in the AIM that answers the question without a doubt. I didn't see it before. "Rear Inboard Hole Not Used." So the answer to the Nose Cone Question for anyone that comes across this thread with the question is:
The nose cone should have three holes for a 69 big block. UPC L35 Sheet A10 |
I have a late 69 Build 8418 starter.......core...needs cosmetic resto and maybe more.
How much are rebuilt , cosmetically restored 8418's going for ?? $$$$$$ Thanks, Chuck |

HBC seems to think they're worth $600, but I think we all know better. $200-$300 seems to be a realistic #. |
Did the 69 and 70 1108418 Starter have a BLACK Solenoid Cover (the non metal front)
When was a BROWN Solenoid Cover Used ??? Is the HEARTBEAT CITY NOS Black Cap (EGP-1357) Correct to replace Original |

May help.
Factory one. All I have of starter- heat shield. Slotted tube nut holding heat shield to solenoid bolt is not back on in pics. It appears to be phosphate like wiring clips on bell and solenoid. Old thread but answer is for Chuck. |
What color is front of solenoid, the CAP on the 8418 Starter ?????
|
black
|
How accurate is the 8418 NOS Solenoid Cap that Heartbeat City sells.....
(THe HBC web city doesnt allow me to copy/paste a picture) https://www.heartbeatcitycamaro.com/...iginal-GM-NOS/ |
No help on that.
Blue car is put up. That is the only car here we feel safe in saying 'factory starter" still there. Two of the converts probably are factory and are black also. Dates and numbers on starters are right, but cars both have replaced short blocks. |

Here is your DELCO NOS Solenoid and the HeartBeat City NOS Black Cap...........
On something that is so hard too see and judge ........what is the problem with the HBC cap......... On HBC Cap NO "U" in USA |
Huge difference in quality.
All you need to look at is the Delco logo. I have a background in gun and coin collecting so this is elementary level to me. All depends what level of detail you seek. If that is indeed a "NOS" cap it is much later than the period one I posted. They are not expensive or hard to find so it should be no big deal. You asked. |
Should add for any that may look for these.
The metal body is dated and numbered. The caps surely did not all come from the same mold so expect slight variances. This is a good time for those that care about minutia to study these 2 examples. IMHO they are not even close. The one may well be 'NOS", but it looks like a much later issue replacement to me. Should add I am not a judge, never was and never will be. Only look at our cars like this or cars that we are buyjng. No intent to ruffle feathers. |
"They are not expensive or hard to find so it should be no big deal."
Please suggest where I can find a good quality not expensive Black Solenoid Front Cap ????? |
lesson learned hopefully.
"KEEP YOUR NOSE OUT OF OTHERS AFFAIRS" epay, starter- alternator repair shop, junkyard with older models, swap meet etc. Take a good pic of one with and match it up. Unless broken- chipped a used one will be fine. Last NOS one cost us $28 on epay. You will find they are real common. |
Delco starters were used on many things other than Chevs.
Best source of grimy = minty caps here is Larson implement in Cambridge MN. Shelves full of solenoids- starters. Many of my tractors have the right cap. Remember the metal solenoid body is dated and numbered. |
Just checked epay searching "NOS DELCO STARTER SOLENOID".
Plenty as usual. I am not the final answer on this so look hard and closely. Remember you n4ed the notch on, top for cable locating ear. They do not all have that. |
