Could this Nova on Craigslist be a Supercar?

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/cs...486028960.html Just came on Craigslist...if he has owned it for 30 years, the car has pitted old 427 emblems...those emblems got me wondering.

Not by his description, or interpretation of the cars numbers. I do like that hood. Anybody making good quality ones these days?

Firewall plate says '69 427' Hmmm.

Re: Could this Nova on Craigslist be a Supercar?

The 427 on the trim tag does not mean it's a 427 engine, nor in the VIN. It show in the VIN that it's a V8. If the VIN shows 327,it's a 6cyl, 227 shows a 4cyl.
The trim tag on the firewall will always show 427. You need to look at the VIN to see what it was born with. No numbers will show cubic inch displacement.

Blew up the pic. Now I see that's not a full L88 hood. Would like to find a full hood. Bottom line. It's not a factory 427. Maybe an SS. Not worth the price. JMHO.

Re: Could this Nova on Craigslist be a Supercar?

I've been chatting with him. Seems like a nice guy but, yes, he thinks the VIN makes it a 427. I mentioned this, showed him a VIN site, and told him badges don't a 427 car make. Then he quoted that a magazine 25 years ago claimed maybe 20 COPOs were built. I told him we know a lot more now than 25 years ago, and nothing has been documented to uphold that belief. Either way, he should be prepared to show evidence it is a 427 car or be prepared for disappointment.

Only way it would be a 427 car is if it was a Yenko which I HIGHLY DOUBT it is.. No pics of the engine compartment to delineate if it is a factory big block car.. Those door panels were common on 69s..

What about the multiple other supercar dealers in 69? Even a 69 Yenko Nova was not factory. I wouldn't rule this out being something. I also love the console. It shows it hasn't been touched since before numbers mattered.

Possible Jason, you never knew who may have made a transplant to a 427.. But I guess without some type of docs it would be hard to establish...

I have somewhere (spent an hour looking) an old used car section from our local milwaukee newspaper from 1970. I remember distinctly a private ad for a 1969 nova and the description read dealer installed 427. I will have to rack my brain as to where that page is. There were many cool ads on that page or two. An old customer of mine was using it as basement shelf liner when I spotted it.

Re: Could this Nova on Craigslist be a Supercar?

I think there may be a few Novas that left the dealer new with dealer installed 427s other than Yenko. We have one in our shop now sold new from Anderson Chev, in Atlanta sold that way. Novas with aluminum heads also fall into that category. They become urban legends as "factory 427s" or factory L89s.

The Alabama deuce we have in process had a 427 emblem on the frt fender. The husband was deceased and his wife swore it was a factory 427 until we ran the nbr that showed it was the original L78.

Every car has a story. Finding the truth is the problem.

An NCRS report w/ performance dealer result could help.
Whether story true or not, substantiation is where the $ are at!

Dale Chevrolet in Waukesha did "Dale Duster" 427 conversions back in the day. A red '68 Chevy II survives [originally Ash Gold] and there is supposed to be a white '69 Nova around.
