What to pay for an original 1970 ss 396 chevelle
I found an unrestored 1970 396 coupe in black with black interior. Super solid car with all original drivetrain that has not been out of car. Bucket consule car. It even still has the original upper and lower radiator hoses and heater hoses. Still original Uniroyal tiger paw tires. I would say a good portion of original paint and trunk splatter is original. It has all the docs including original title, pop, dealer paperwork such as sales orders and bill of sale. No window sticker. I do not have pics to post yet but the car is a survivor not a restoration car. What is a going price for something like this thanks.

Air conditioning? 4-speed? Cowl Induction? Miles? Lots of info still needed to even render a guess. Sounds very cool, though.......and....welcome aboard!

The car is a 4 speed with bucket seats and center console. It has the cowl induction hood. It has the base 396 motor. It is not the aluminum head version. Here is pic of engine. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-chevelle.jpg

Looks to be very unmolested, I know of a silver car in immaculate condition with less than 10k miles, A/C 350hp PS PB original tires, just under 100k.
This is a very original car and highly desirable in the color combo. The details gained from this car would be great. IMHO If you get it do not paint or clean anything before certifying the car. |

Pay as little as possible. On ebay it will bring 30k and up. Sounds like an Oshawa build. I have its twin in Fathom Blue

I disagree. Nicely restored cars will always get more attention at cars shows. </div></div> A pretty shiny car will get more looks from the average Joe at a car show without a doubt. But a nice unrestored musclecar will get "way more" looks by the real enthusiast. The true enthusiast will stand and stare and stare some more. Restored cars are everywhere. Nice survivor cars are rarely seen. No offense to shiny pretty cars, I have those and it's not the same as a survivor. Good luck with the 70 Chevelle!! |

70 Chevelles would have smog systems. Should have bosses drilled in manifolds for smog tubes. Probably deep sixed the original smog system including exh mans and added headers. Then, someone switched back to manifolds and put non-smog on there.

Not true. Only solid liftered engines,(L-78 396/375HP & LS-6 454/450HP),1970 chevelles had A.I.R.(SMOG) manifolds. Their hydraulic brethren,(L-34 396/350HP & LS-5 454/360HP),did not. And their transmission type did not make a difference either. |

No smog on 350 HP 396. It also looks like an early build.

That's not the A.I.R. SMOG system Tom.
You're referring to the 1970 RPO NA-9 charcoal canister EEC,(Evaporative Emission Control),system.Also known as the sold brand new in the state of California Emissions.And their ex.manifolds weren't affected by it. Hydraulic liftered 1970 chevelles sold new there or anywhere in the US,did not get A.I.R. SMOG. |

Ricks right, no A.I.R. on any 70 Chevrolet with hydraulic lifter engines. Only SHP solid lifter cars got smog pumps in 70, NA9 California emissions were available on all engines but did not include smog pumps only the evaporative emission stuff.

Given that it still has the original Uniroyal Tiger Paws, it must have very low mileage. Assuming that, and with all the docs listed, I will say value is somewhere around the $45 - $55K range.

Regarding which car gets the most attention, survivor or restored cars. I have both and depending on which type of show you go to will dictate who flocks to your car. Go to an NCRS event and a survivor will get all the attention. Go to a Cars and Coffee show and a restored car will get most of the looks. I agree with the other post about the REAL enthusiasts paying most attention to the survivor cars.

At MCACN I spend as much time as possible in the Barn Finds/Hidden Gems and the Vintage Certification areas, patina is cool and costs less:-)
I truly love restored and survivor.... If I had to pick one or the other (a correctly restored car or a time capsule Survivor) I would politely thank the owner of the restored car and pay the owner of the survivor:-) Ryan |
